    Q
How to get rid of moths in whole house?
I ordered your pantry pest kit last week and am waiting for it to arrive. We've had moths (mostly visible during warm months) for over a year, and they're in 7 rooms on 2 floors of our house. So far, not in basement or bsmt apt that we know. We've cleaned with regular cleaners and even sprayed a mix of ammonia and water. We've put out 7 of the Revenge moth traps which we got at the local hardware store (they say 1 trap per room). We kill an average of 8 to 10 moths per day by hand. Should we get rid of the Revenge moth traps, and use only the traps in your pantry pest kit? Should we get another product to help solve this problem? Please help! Thanks
    A

The best tip we can give you is to catch a moth and take it to your Local Cooperative Extension office and have the Entomologist on staff identify the species. If you are using a trap that only targets a certain species of moth with its pheromone, and that's not the type of moth you have, then the traps will not work no matter how many you have or what kind. You also want to make sure you don't have too many traps up, as too many traps can cause you to not catch any moths as well. Most traps have a sexual pheromone to only attract the male moths to them to help interrupt the reproductive cycle. If there are too many traps, the air becomes oversaturated with pheromone and the moth cant tell the difference between the trap and all the other air in the room and won't be directed to the trap. The female moths will not go to the traps so you would still need to kill those that are flying around. If you identify what kind of moth you have and the traps you have ordered apply to it, then you may need to use fewer traps to avoid over-saturation. Also, you need to clean out everything, throw away any infested food, and treat all cracks and crevices of baseboards, cabinets, and furniture in the area. The larvae will normally be left in crevices and can crawl in spots hard to see. Using a crack and crevice residual spray like Cy-Kick or D-Force will help give long-term control over the babies. You can also put up Gentrol Point Source Stations to add a birth control to the mix. These will release a vapor in the air undetected by us but will affect the moths flying in the area and prevent them from creating more. You can review our article How To Get Rid of Pantry Moths for other steps for treating your home. Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

    Q
I have an infestation of very small moths in my pantry. What should I do to get rid of them?
I am getting ready to place an order for Max Force.
    A
Maxforce bait will not work for pantry moths. The best way to eliminate pantry moths is to find the infested food items and dispose of them  immediately and thoroughly clean the infested cabinet. The moth larva (immature moths) can usually be found in grain products such as pasta, rice, flour, or spices. The adult moths and wandering larva can be killed with CY-Kick aerosol. The active male moths can be lured and trapped with the Pro-pest Pantry Moth trap. We have put together A Pantry Pest kit that contains everything you need to get rid of the pantry moths.

    Q
I have kitchen moths. How long is their life span? I think I found the nest in a bag of dog food.
    A
We would recommend discarding any opened or infested food (human or dog). Please store all items in sealed containers. You will clean all the cabinets, pantries and drawers out and wash with hot, soapy water to rid of any larvae on the shelving. After these surfaces are cleaned and dried completely, you will apply the products in our Pantry Pest Kit. The traps will lure and catch the adult males disrupting the life cycle. The crack and crevice application will offer a 4 week residual for treatment. The life span of a pantry moth varies depending on food and temperatures. The average is 8-12 weeks for one generation. Four to six generations could take residence in a home. This is from egg-adult (egg-1week, larvae-4-6 weeks, pupae- 1-2 weeks, adult 1-2 weeks).

    Q
    Confused Flour Beetle
Reading the reviews of the product it seems people are using it to get rid of moths mostly. My problem however is confused flour beetle and I'm wondering if the same product would help with that?
    A
The Pantry Pest Kit is a wonderful solution for flour beetles. Cy-Kick Aerosol is labeled to kill flour beetles. You will need to make sure you take out any infested food and throw away and put lids and/or bag the items that are out. You will spray this product in the cracks and crevices of the pantry area. The traps are labeled to be used for moths as well as beetles.

    Q
After applying the D-Force spray from the Pantry Pest Kit, do I need to line the shelving with cupboard liners?
    A

It is not required to line shelving after using any of the products in the Pantry Pest Kit, although it certainly would not hurt anything if you choose to do so.  Be sure all food and food handling items are removed prior to treatment. Allow the treated area to completely dry before replacing items.

    Q
Can the Pantry Pest Kit be used for "drugstore beetle"?
I'm not sure if flour beetle and drugstore beetle are one and the same. I had a minor infestation in one cupboard inside old pasta boxes and spices (tiny, brown bug). Would this kit be useful? I am still seeing one or two here and there.
    A
The glue traps in the Pantry Pest Kit are not labeled to attract drugstore beetles, however the Cy Kick aerosol would kill any beetle that came into contact with a crevice it was sprayed into. You may want to get a can of the Cy-Kick by itself and Gentrol IGR Aerosol as well to help stop the reproductive cycle of any larva and adults in the infested area.

  • Asked by Coleen from Christiansburg, Va

    Q
Will the pantry pest trap work insects that eat synthetic fabric?
I have several clothing items that are synthetic that have eaten places--not holes--but part of the fiber has been eaten. What insect does this damage and what do you have to exterminate it/them? These items were in a hanging bag storage over the spring/summer.
    A
The ProPest Pheronet Pantry Pest Traps will only work for Indian Meal Moths, Mediterranean Flour Moths, Almond Moths, Raisin Moths and Cigarette Beetles. If there were indeed pests damaging the clothing there should be some evidence of the insects themselves such as feces, cast skins or dead insects. You should also note that it is usually the immature insects called larva that do most of the damage to clothing. Have you noticed small beetles or moths around the inside of your home lately? We recommend taking all of the clothes out of the storage bag and washing them and then drying the clothing on high heat. Any insects that may have been on the clothing would be killed. You should also thoroughly clean the storage bag or discard it.

    Q
Will the Pantry Pest Kit traps work for bird seed moths?
I own cockatiels and my food has moths in it. I've thrown away the food but can't seem to get rid of the moths. Will the pantry moth trap work for these moths?
    A

The ProPest Pantry Pest Traps included in the Pantry Pest Kit will attract the most common pantry pests: Indian Meal Moths, Mediterranean Flour Moths, Almond Moths, Raisin Moths, and Cigarette Beetles. If you have one of these insects, then the traps will do a great job. Be sure that you thoroughly clean the area, discard any infested items, and keep other dry food (for both pets and people) in airtight containers to prevent further infestation. You would use the D-Force Aerosol as a crack and crevice spray in cabinets, pantry, shelves, etc., making sure that you do not contaminate any food or utensils. Be sure that you do not use more than 1-2 pheromone traps in the entire house at one time. Be sure that you do not use any insecticides while birds are present in the room. You should not spray on bird cages or resting areas.

    Q
What products are best to use for meal moths?
    A

When treating for meal moths we would recommend using our Pantry Pest Kit.  This kit contains the aerosol D-Force as well as the Pheromone Traps.  Both products are need to effectively treat and erradicate meal moths.  The aerosol can be used as a crack and crevice treatment in the emptied cabinets around the shelves and the traps can be used to draw in and attract and trap the moths. It is critical that you inspect the area for infested items so that you can locate and eliminate the source of the infestation.

    Q
What should I use for drug store beetles!?
We threw away the dog bones they were eating but I need them gone now!
    A

We do not carry a trap that is specifically labeled for drugstore beetles but the Pantry Patrol Beetle Trap has been reported by some customers to lure drugstore beetles.  We also recommend you purchase an aerosol insecticide such as D-Force HPX to treat all of the cracks and crevices where the larva could be developing.

What do you recommend for pantry moths that we have treated with only foggers for about 16 months?

While fogging may kill moths out and about, it will not take care of the problem. The best way to eliminate pantry moths is to find the infested food items and dispose of them immediately and thoroughly clean the infested cabinet. Q
Is the Pantry Pest Kit safe for birds?
I have pantry moths. Is this spray safe for my birds ?
    A

Yes, D-Force which is the spray in the Pantry Pest Kit,  is safe to use around pets as long as you follow the product label instructions. Pets and people need to be out of the room while the product is being applied and can safely return as soon as it is dry. We do not recommend using insecticide sprays in or on any bird cages or habitats or in areas where the birds would contact the residual spray. The traps are only a pheromone and do not contain any pesticides.

    Q
Would I only need one Pantry Pest Kit?
I have only seen a few in my house a day. We just used a fogger in the kitchen and living room. Since then its been 1 and half days until we saw 3 later in the afternoon. Also do you recommend sealing gaps within the corner of our cabinets?
    A

Each case will be different. We recommend starting out with only one Pantry Pest Kit and buying a can of D-Force Aerosol and/or ProPest Pheronet Pantry Pest Traps as needed. D-Force Aerosol offers a residual of up to 8 weeks and the ProPest Pheronet Pantry Pest Traps remain active from 4-6 weeks.
