  • Asked by Nelson from Clinton,nc

    Q
What do I spray to kill pine beetles?
I have about 10 acres of long leaf pine trees that are in rows. We harvest the pine straw to sell but the trees are dying in sections and I found out it was pine beetles. What do I spray and do I use the boom or spray the sections that are infested with a wand I guess each tree that has it or what thanks nelson
    A
Unfortunately, there is no easy solution when it comes to pine beetles. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a product called Permethrin SFR. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations.

  • Asked by Lucinda from Gonzales, La

    Q
Should I use Permethrin SFR or Hy-Yield 38 Plus for red ants?
I am having a bad problem with red ants coming inside of my home from under the doors. I am currently using the Talstar granules which kills the ants, but I keep finding dead ants that have come inside.
    A
The Permethrin SFR 36.8% and the Hi-Yield 38% Plus both have the same active ingredient and will give comparable results so either would be a good choice as a barrier spray around the home and door and window frames.

  • Asked by Laurence from Dallas, Tx
    04/20/2014
    Q
Can I mix Riptide 5% and Permethirin
My mosquitoes laughed at Riptide last year.
    A
Technically you can use them together, as long as you are using in a standard pump sprayer and not in a ULV fogger.  Riptide will provide a fast knockdown to insects that are in the area while applying and Permethrin will provide a residual that continues to kill the insects that land on a treated surface.

  • Asked by David from Shirley, Arkansas

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR 36.8% be used to pretreat during slab construction.I need to treat 3700 square ft what is mix ratio .
I have 3700 ft to treat what is mix ratio and how much will I need. Can I use hose end sprayer to treat.
    A
Permethrin SFR 36.8% would not be recommended as a pre slab treatment. We would recommend using Termidor. Pre-slab and barrier treatments with Termidor can last for up to 10 years for subterranean termite control. You would dilute Temidor at .8 oz per gallon water and apply 1-1.5 gallons diluted solution per 10 sq. feet. Please refer to page 5 of the product label.

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR 36.8% be used to treat a bed mattress for bedbugs?
What about recliner chairs? How would I mix and apply?
    A

We usually do not recommend Permethrin SFR 36.8% for treating for bedbugs. This is because of the high chance of resistance. Permethrin SFR is not labeled for use on furniture or mattresses. Instead, we recommend you use a product called Transport Mikron. This product has dual active ingredients to avoid resistance by the bedbugs and it is labeled for use on furniture and mattresses. Transport Mikron is mixed at 1.25 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft. For more information on treating for bedbugs, please take a few moments to review our treatment article on How to Get Rid of Bedbugs.

  • Asked by Pat from Long Grove Il
    05/11/2014
    Q
What is the best product to get rid of ticks when you have about a 1/2 acre of trees on your property?
I am buying a house that has a lot of trees on the property and I am worried about ticks. Please tell me the best product to get rid of ticks when you have about a 1/2 acre of trees on your property. All the products I read about talk about minimizing ticks in gardens or grassy areas.
    A
The best products we can recommend for tick control would be the Permethrin SFR mixed with the NyGuard IGR. The Permethrin SFR is the killing agent that will kill and repel the ticks in the areas that you treat. The NyGuard IGR is a birth control to keep the ticks from reproducing and to keep immature stages of the ticks from growing into reproducing adults. These two products can be mixed together and sprayed at the same time for a letal combo to the tick population. Spraying with the Permethrin SFR every 2 weeks at first can be needed and then back off to every 30-60 days. The NyGuard will hold up typically 3-4 months outdoors.

  • Asked by David from Aransas Pass

    Q
How do i dilute Permethrin SFR for flea control in yard?
I'm having trouble understanding your recomendations for flea control. One part of the instructions states 1&2/3 ounces per gallon of water. Then it goes on to mention flea control for the YARD .4 to .8 ounces per gallon of water. We just sprayed our back yard for flea infestation with 1&2/3 ouncers per gallon. When would one only use .4 to .8 ounces per gallon? Would that be for subsequent monthly "maintenance" only?
    A
You can use any of the rates that you mentioned for flea control. The most common rates used for lawns would be .8 ounces per gallon. You will want to keep your grass short and target your sprays towards any area that holds moisture more than another. It can also help to use an insect growth regulator with the spray to help stop the reproductive cycle of the fleas. One of the best IGRs for this would be the NyGuard IGR which can easily be mixed and sprayed at the same time with the Permethrin to be applied at the same time.

  • Asked by Marcia from Morris, Al

    Q
I want to spray for mosquitoes in my backyard with Permethrin SFR, how much to use?
I have a patch of woods in the back of my backyard, and a lot of mosquitoes. I'd like to spray the grass and some of the bushes/tress close to the yard. How much Permethrin SFR should I use per gallon.
    A
Permethrin SFR is not labeled for general mosquito control so we do not recommend it for this use. We usually recommend using Bifen IT for mosquito control and it can be used with an IGR such as Pivot IGR to help sterilize the adults.

    Q
    permethrin SFR 36.8%
I was going to order Sawyer Premium insect repellant which repels insects on clothing for 6 weeks or 4-6 washes. the active ingredient is 0.05% Permethrin. So instead I don't see why this product couldn't be used at a diluted rate (and what would the amount per gallon be to dilute it? As with the other product I should be able to use it in shoes, clothes, and around the house hopefully on couches, floors, rugs furniture, right?
    A
Permethrin SFR is a different formulation than the products that are labeled for use on clothing and other surfaces and it should not be used to treat clothing or other areas not listed on the product label under any circumstances.  We have to advise to follow the instructions on the product label.  Even though the products contain the same active ingredients, the formulations are very different.  Could you tell us what you are treating and we can make a product recommendation more appropriate for your use?
