Product Overview

Phantom is an indoor/outdoor termiticide and insecticide that kills termites, ants, cockroaches, and now bed bugs, through a powerful non-repellent active ingredient. Pests can't even detect Phantom, so they walk right over it and then spread it to other insects hidden behind walls or in their home colony, killing every other pest they come in contact with. Phantom is virtually odorless, clear in color and provides superior pest control with a long-lasting residual.

How Phantom Insecticide & Termiticide Works

Phantom Termiticide/Insecticide is a non-repellent liquid concentrate that is diluted with water and usually applied with a pump sprayer. Phantom contains the active ingredient Chlorfenapyr, which belongs to a relatively new class of insecticides called pyrroles that are produced from microbes. Pyrroles do not metabolize into active insecticides until after they enter the host target pest. Chlorfenapyr disrupts the production of ATP in the part of the cell that turns food into energy, causing cellular death and ultimate mortality. Because this process is slower than other modes of action, Phantom can have a transfer effect similar to that of baits on social insects like ants, cockroaches, and termites.

Insects do not smell, taste, or avoid applications of Phantom. This means that Phantom can be used in conjunction with baits (do not spray on top of baits). Phantom also eliminates pest build up in one area, preventing pest avoidance of treated areas. The residual of Phantom will last for 30 days or longer. Phantom also has a high potency, so fewer applications are needed for effective treatments.

Phantom Target Insects

Ants, termites, bed bugs, centipedes, beetles

INSECTS CONTROLLED: termites (Reticulitermes spp. (R. flavipes, R. virginicus, R. hageni, R. tibialis, R. Hesperus), Coptotermes spp. (C. formosanus), and Heterotermes spp. (H. aureus); ants (acrobat, Argentine, carpenter, odorous house, pavement, pharaoh’s, pyramid); beetles (Asian lady, confused flour, darkling larva (yellow mealworm), saw-toothed grain); bed bugs; boxelder bugs; centipedes, cockroaches (American, Asian, brown-banded, German, Oriental, and smokybrown); European earwigs; house crickets; house flies; paper wasps (not a knockdown agent); pillbugs; spiders (black widow, cellar); silverfish

Target Uses

Phantom is a Termiticide and insecticide labeled for indoor (follow the label carefully) as well as outdoor use. It combines nonrepellency, superior control, long-lasting effects, and the ability to control populations faster than baiting systems—all in a low-dose, virtually odorless formulation. Phantom can be used as a soil drench, wall foam or as a general use spray as desired.

Phantom is a popular choice for ants and cockroaches because it can be used in conjunction with baiting. Phantom is also ideal for bed bug control because it is non-repellent and effective for pyrethroid resistant strains of bed bugs. Because of its long residual and efficacy with these and other common household pests, Phantom is an excellent choice for apartments, hotels, or similar commercial properties.

  • Phantom also comes in a convenient aerosol formulation for smaller jobs or crack and crevice treatments.

Though Phantom is labeled for use as a soil drench for subterranean termites, products such as Termidor SC are more cost effective and last longer in the ground.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Chlorfenapyr 21.45%

Application Instructions

For termite treatments, use 4 gallons of 0.125% solution per 10 lineal feet of a 6 in. by 6 in. trench, establishing a continuous treated zone between the wood and other cellulose material in the structure and the termite population(s) in the soil. For pre-construction treatment to be covered by concrete slab, use 1 gallon of 0.25% finished solution per 10 square feet. Apply using a coarse spray nozzle and low-pressure spray (less than 25 psi). See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment for more details on liquid termite treatments.

Phantom may be converted to a foam for treatments in structural voids. Foam applications to voids above soil should be done with a wet foam (10:1 expansion ratio or less). See mixing table on the product label for dilution rates.

For general pest control indoors, applications should be made to breeding areas, nesting sites, hiding places, runways, and other places where pests are found or likely to infest. For use with only low-pressure directed spray application equipment. Use a 0.5% solution for crack and crevice or spot applications. Do not apply more than once every four weeks.

  • One 21 oz. bottle makes 28 gallons of 0.125% solution for termites or 7 gallons of general use spray for cockroaches and ants.
  • A 75 oz. bottle makes 100 gallons of finished solution for termites or 25 gallons of general use spray.

Standard Application Dilution rates / Mixing Ratios:

  • 0.75 fl. oz. (22 mL)/gal. of water – 0.125% - most termite applications
  • 1.5 fl. oz. (44 mL)/gal. of water – 0.25% - small volume termite applications
  • 3.0 fl. oz. (88 mL)/gal. of water – 0.5% - general pest applications
  • Use 4 gallons of 0.125% solution per 10 lineal feet for perimeter termite treatments
  • One gallon of 0.5% solution for general pest applications covers approximately 1,000 square feet

Phantom is for use in the following areas:

Pre-construction and post-construction termite treatments in and around residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; inside houses, apartments or other residential structures, meat, poultry and egg processing and packaging plants, the food/feed and non-food/feed areas of food-handling establishments and commercial, institutional and warehousing establishments; food service, manufacturing and processing establishments such as restaurants, cafeterias, supermarkets, mills, processing plants, bakeries, breweries, dairies, meat slaughtering and packing plants and canneries; schools, groceries and supermarkets, restaurants and cafeterias, hotels and motels, hospitals and nursing homes, warehouses and industrial buildings, laboratories, zoos, pet shops, computer facilities, sewers

Indoors

Cockroaches: Phantom is effective against American, Asian, brownbanded, German, Oriental, smokybrown, and other cockroach species. Use a 0.5% dilution. Apply dilution as a coarse, low pressure spot or crack and crevice spray to areas where these pests normally inhabit or are likely to infest.

Limited spot treatment of Phantom dilution can be made to surfaces beneath cabinets, spaces between equipment or expansion joints, surfaces behind sinks, lockers, water pipes, cabinets, or other areas where cockroaches may hide. Reapply, if needed, every 4 weeks or more.

Ants: Phantom is highly effective against household and structure-invading ants, including the following species: acrobat ants, Argentine Ants, Carpenter Ants, odorous house ants, pavement ants, Pharaoh's ants, pyramid ants, and other species.

Apply crack and crevice or spot treatments of a 0.5% dilution to areas of known or suspected ant activity. Where possible, apply Phantom directly to ant nest(s) or nesting site(s) or ant-infested wood or structural voids. Reapply, if needed, every 4 weeks or more.

Bed bugs: Do not make surface applications to mattresses. Mattress treatments must be confined to the seams, folds and edges only. Remove linens and wash before reuse. Allow to dry before remaking bed. Use an approved product for other treatment areas. Not recommended as the sole protection against bed bugs.

Outdoors

Exterior application of Phantom is limited to spot and crack and crevice treatments where pests enter around doors, windows, eaves, attic vents, and holes in exterior walls where utilities enter. Apply a maximum of 1.2 fl. oz. of dilution per 2 square feet.

Phantom Features

  • Convenient tip-and-pour bottle makes measuring and mixing easy.
  • Pests do not detect Phantom applications so they unknowingly contact and ingest Phantom during routine activities.
  • Precision targeted application method means less product goes farther.
  • Effective against a wide variety of household ants and cockroaches.
  • Labeled for use in food-handling environments.
  • Effective for pyrethroid resistant strains of bed bugs.
  • Excellent choice to accompany baiting programs.

Extra Tips for Using Phantom

  • Store out of extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Do not treat within a distance of one foot out from the dripline of edible plants.
  • Do not make general surface or space applications such as for pantry pests in cupboards, cabinets, or containers.
  • Do not reapply more than once every four weeks.
  • Diluting more than recommended rates may cause product to become repellent and ineffective.
  • Do not apply as a broadcast spray indoors or full perimeter application outdoors.

    Phantom

    By Tammy on 10/25/2011

    Verified Purchase

I have been using the Phantom with only little results. I spray bi-weekly and am STILL seeing the roaches in the kitchen, bedrooms and living room. My next door neighbor is using the same product. However, the upstairs people don't do anything. I do not think I will be buying this particular product again.

    Terrible! Waste of money!

    By J on 05/15/2013

This stuff is terrible! I've been using this for a month now and still have these little black ants. I used ant bait first and they usually go for it, but didn't this time. After a week I sprayed the house with Phantom. The ants are walking across half the house directly over the entire path that I sprayed 3 times and they're still alive and kicking and moving as fast as ever. I have a Florida block house and spray a lower barrier around the whole house and then another at the top of the block. Then go around again and hit the soffits and the corners. I think Raid would work better. Pest guy said Phantom was better than Demon, but I don't see it.. I'm going back to Demon. Demon works great!

    By Brittany on 01/24/2022

Did not do anything , and yes I know how to read directions and follow instructions. I even sprayed a roach directly and with my own two eyes I saw him dust his wings off and keep going... very disappointed like $75 for such a small bottle AND it didn't work.

    Phantom Termiticide/Insecticide

    By David on 08/14/2015

My purchase was delivered as promised. The product did not work to expectations of killing roaches, but seemed to excite them somewhat and slow them down. That was more my fault as I ordered the product before I listened to a professionals advice on what I used to get from them! (Voicemail message-did not recognize the number) This Product does not kill on contact, but does drown the roaches if sprayed directly on the cockroach. Will order Suspend poly-zone asap.

    Expert ResponseExpert response:
We are sorry to learn that the Phantom did not work up to your expectations. While Phantom is a great product, it is very slow acting by nature. Roach control usually involves a comprehensive program which involves and insecticide spray, and Insect Growth regulator and a roach bait. Please take a few moments to read over our Roach Treatment Guide to learn how to implement an effective roach control program: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/how-to-get-rid-of-roaches-a-458.html

Not my favorite... went back to Demon

    By Ayaz on 06/01/2016

I know, I know... everyone is going to say you have to give it time and I am crazy... but gave it six months and the roaches are more than ever... Using Demon we had it under control and one of the managers all knowing Pest Control guy said Phantom is the greatest thing ever... so we had to get it... six months later after numerous complaints from people seeing bugs I told them if I have to hear the complaints I will select the product to use... so they decided for me not to hand out their number for complaints... and we are going back to Demon...

    Not So Wild About It...

    By Pw on 09/13/2010

Have outside ant problem, and this does not seem to stop them. Would not buy again for this purpose.

    Expert ResponseExpert response:
Phantom does not repel insects from an area as it is non repellent which means they cannot detect it. It also is a slow kill so it has time to be carried back to other insects and spread through transfer. You will still insects for a time due to this. The only way to keep insects completely out of the home is to seal up all crack and crevices that allow them access inside. We have a great general pest prevention guide below that can help as well. https://www.domyown.com/integrated-pest-management-a-455.html

Q
Is Phantom Insecticide safe around kids and babies?
A
Yes, Phantom is safe while kids/babies and pets are in the house. Phantom is only strong enough to kill small insects. It is a good idea to keep pets and children outside or in another room while treating and then allow about 30 minutes for the products to dry. Once dry, it is perfectly safe for children and pets to re-enter the living space. Of course you should always store the products just like any other cleaning chemicals, out of reach of children and pets.

Q
How effective is Phantom Insecticide for bed bug control?

I am experiencing a problem with bed bugs and recently had my apartment treated with Phantom. The technician treated not only cracks and floorboards, etc, but sprayed my walls as well. I'm reading the info on this website which says only to treat seams, not walls. Is treating the walls safe and effective? How many treatments will I need? Apartment was sprayed today and I have seen several live bed bugs and have felt several bites. Shouldn't it kill them immediately?

A
Phantom is quickly becoming the new preferred treatment for bed bugs.  It leaves a long term residual that has shown to kill bed bugs long after you initially treat.  However, it is not an immediate kill.  When a bed bug crosses over an area that has been treated with Phantom, it picks up the product on its body, but it can take days to kill the bed bug.  This is why you will still see bed bugs and still may get bitten, but the bed bug will die.  Phantom is very popular now because bed bugs build up resistance easily to certain products and Phantom is a product that they have not shown resistance to yet.  Any good company should treat every two weeks for at least two cycles.  It could take more than two treatments depending on the severity of the situation.  I cannot comment on the companies interpretation of the instructions, but treating cracks and crevices, baseboards, and other areas will ensure that when the bed bugs come out of hiding that they will cross a treated barrier.  You should consider our Bed Bug Treatment Kits.  They have a very high success rate and will save you lots of money over hiring another exterminator if they are not successful.

Q
How much Phantom Insecticide do I mix per gallon for roach control?

I am regular customer of yours. I am very pleased with Phantom. However, in the manual it states that the dilution for roaches should be 3 oz per gal. I am a little concerned as you mentioned 1.5 oz per gal?

A

The amount of 1.5 oz per gallons of water more pertains if you are using Phantom for a termite treatment.  You should use 3 oz per gallon of water when applying for roaches or other general pest control insects.

Q
Is there a restricted entry interval following an application of Phantom Insecticide for cockroaches? Is there any personal protective equipment required for such re-entry?
A

Phantom is an odorless and very safe liquid insecticide.  There is no requirement to wear anything special upon re-entry.  You should always wear gloves when applying any pesticide, but unless you are in a completely closed room with no ventilation, you do not need a respirator.  You should allow enough time for the product to dry and then it is perfectly fine to enter back into the space with children and pets.  Usually it takes 30 - 45 minutes for the product to dry thoroughly.  Always read the product label for full treatment instructions.

Q
Phantom vs Termidor

What is better for termites: Phantom or Termidor?

A

Termidor is definitely the most popular termite treatment product available.  Phantom was made more for indoor pest control and perimeter pest control treatments.  Since Termidor is not labeled to treat around the indoors for pest control, Phantom was made to serve that purpose.  Although Phantom is labeled for termites treating, it does not last nearly as long as Termidor does in the ground and it is also much more costly per finished gallon than Termidor is.
