  • Asked by Pam from East Bridgewater, Ma

    Q
Are there any products that will treat established pythium blight on my lawn?
Would aeration be effective at this point or would it just spread the fungus? Definitely pythium as I've seen the cottony, weblike growth in the early morning.
    A

Here are a few tips for getting rid of Pythium Blight:

    • Avoid mowing wet, infected turf where mycelium is present to avoid spreading spores with the mower blades
    • Reduce thatch and improve drainage with core aeration.
    • Increase air circulation and reduce the amount of shade which will limit the amount of time of foliar
    • Non frequent deep watering is better verses frequent shallow watering
    • Do not water at night.
    • Apply Subdue Maxx for chemical treatment

  • Asked by Steve from Bettendorf

    Q
How many oz of Subdue Maxx per gallon of water through a tank sprayer applied to Bluegrass and Perennial Rye?
I have had a disease problem over the last several years in the same areas of my home turf grass. I want to apply as a preventive measure. Also how many applications of Subdue Max would be advisable?
    A

Per the product label of Subdue Maxx Fungicide: You would use 0.50 – 1.0 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft in 1-5 gallons of water.  The amount of water is not set as it is just the carrier and will be however much it takes you to cover that area.  For best efficacy, 1/2 inch irrigation or rainfall is required within 24 hours after application. Within the rate range given for turf, use the lower rate for the shortest interval listed and the higher specifi ed rate for the longest interval. Under severe disease conditions, use the specifi ed highest rate and shortest interval.  Please refer to the product label for complete instructions though depending the target disease you want to prevent.

    Q
When is the best time to treat with Subdue MAXX Fungicide, and how often do I need to re-apply it?
Soil treatment for phytophhora in forsythia hedge
    A

Subdue MAXX Fungicide is not labled for a soil treatment when treating for phytophthora. Per the product label it should be applied as a foliar treatment only. Also this would not be a product that we would recommend for that either as you would have to use such a miniscule amount when treating hedges as the label states to use it in 100 gallons of water. To be able to break that down would not be worth using.

You could use Monterey Agri-Fos Fungicide. It is labeled for a soil drench at a rate of 2 to 4 tsp per gallon of water, and you would apply 1 gallon per sq yard. Follow the application with irrigation to get the product down to the roots of the plant. You can do repeat applications at 14-21 day intervals.

    Q
Is Subdue Maxx safe on Hardy Ferns?
    A

While Subdue Maxx Fungicide is labeled for numerous ornamental plants, it does not specifically list ferns as a tolerant plant.  There are many plants the product has not been tested on to know the outcome, so for this reason we recommend contacting the manufacturer, Syngenta, at 1-866-796-4368 for more information regarding using it on ferns.

    Q
Would Subdue Maxx Fungicide work on Hypoxylon Canker Fungus in Post Oaks?
    A

Subdue Maxx is not labeled specifically for Hypoxylon Canker Fungus. According to this extension article from UMN, "there are no fungicides that prevent or cure Hypoxylon canker." However, proper management practices can significantly reduce problems that may possibly occur. Generally, avoiding tree stress and maintaining an overall healthy tree is the best way of avoiding the canker.
