A pre-emergent herbicide such as Pendulum Aqua Cap would help with prevention but will not treat actively growing Japanese Stiltgrass. We would suggest a selective post-emergent such as Acclaim. Acclaim Extra is a selective post-emergence herbicide that controls annual and perennial grasses in turf including Japanese Stiltgrass. Please refer to product label for specific applications to your turfgrass.

Surflan Pro Herbicide does not require a surfactant since it is a pre-emergent. Surfactants are needed for post emergent herbicides as they help the product penetrate the waxy coating of the weeds.
Surflan Pro Herbicide is known to be pretty thick and will likely clog a hose end sprayer, so we do not recommend using one for application. The other problem with using a hose end sprayer to apply Surflan is that this type of sprayer sometimes is not very accurate, so you can wind up dispensing more/less product than needed in a given area, which can lead to less than desirable results.

If you have applied too much of an herbicide such as Surflan, then the application is going to be less safe for the area, plus you can damage your desirable turfgrass or ornamental plants in the treatment area. The product will also take longer to breakdown in the soil, lengthening timing intervals for maintenance such as seeding and transplanting. Please be sure you are reading product labels completely before applying herbicides so that you are making correct applications.

The best time to applying pre-emergents vary from region to region. In Nebraska, the best time to apply a pre-emergent like Surflan Pro would be from March to May (Spring) and from August to November (Fall). Please take a look at our Lawn Care Schedule for more timing applications for a full lawn care program. We also recommend contacting your Local Cooperative Extension office for the best time to apply pre-emergents in your county.
