    Q
    flea problems
I want something to spray on the my carpets and couch. It says you can but then discourages putting on the couches. I have a 5 year old and a three year old so it concerns me chemicals but something has to be done. Please help. What is the best Suspend SC or would Demize ER work better?
    A

Suspend SC is a good option for fleas. You would need to mix an IGR (insect growth regulator) with it to make sure the fleas do not reproduce. We would recommend the same with Demize EC. These products should be added to water and directly applied with a gallon sprayer to problem areas such as rugs, carpets, furniture, pet bedding, baseboards, and cracks and crevices

We would recommend using Ultracide. It contains an insecticide, as well as an IGR (insect growth regulator). This will stop the fleas from reproducing. It is safe to spray on your furniture. This will kill the flea larvae and eggs as well as the adult fleas. You will do your first treatment and then vacuum daily for 14 days and do a second treatment. Sometimes a third and/or fouth treatment is necessary.

We would not recommend spraying when the children are in the room. Once the products have had time to dry, 2-4 hours, they can return to the room(s) that have been treated.

    Q
Can Suspend SC liquid be applied to Harwood floors?
I have engineered hardwood floors and my installer and the manufacturer's warranty state that the floors are to remain dry and to immediately wipe up any spills. Is there a way to apply Suspend SC to hardwood floors to treat for everyday pest control?
    A
Suspend SC cannot be applied to hardwood floors. It is meant to be applied to cracks and crevices only. Normally, for general pest control we recommend to stick to cracks, crevices and entry points.

    Q
After the application of Suspend, if I vacuum that area, will the product still be effective?
Will the product remain on the carpet after vacuuming?
    A
Suspend SC is really labeled to be applied to cracks and crevices not as a broadcast over carpet. If you were to vacuum a treated area after it has dried it would not take the product up.

    Q
I ordered Precor and Suspend for a bad flea infestation, how would you treat? We have kids
I was thinking wetting all floors down and all baseboards, cat bedding, etc. with Suspend SC and Precor IGR. Do I combine the two and wet all floors? What are your thoughts? We are in the process of sanding wood floors so staining isn't an issue. I know the cracks are filled with eggs
    A
Suspend SC and Precor IGR can be mixed together in the same sprayer so you do not have to treat twice. You will need to vacuum all areas prior to treatment. This includes all the carpet, upholstered furniture, baseboards and other indoor areas that are frequented by pets. Discard the bag when done. Pet bedding should be clean and replaced. You will spray Suspend SC and Precor IGR in areas where the fleas have been found. You will vaccum daily for 14 days and do a second treatment with Suspend SC. It is possible that another treatment will need to be done after the two initial treatments so you will use the Precor IGR if a third treatment is needed.

    Q
When using Suspend SC do I need a respirator mask?
Is Suspend SC bad to breath while treating interior off house?
    A
For general treatment indoors, using a basic respirator mask such as the N95 Valved Respirator Mask would be fine to use but is not required.  When using products such as Suspend SC according to the product label it is safe to use and there would be no danger of inhaling any odors.

The residual is about 3 months indoors and 1 month outdoors. You will spray around the baseboards and cracks and crevices indoors. Outdoors, you can spray around the perimeter of your home.

    Suspend SC for spider mites?
Had spider mites in my indoor garden if I empty the garden and treat with Suspend SC will that rid me of the spider mites?
    A
Suspend SC is not labeled to treat spider mites so we would not recommend it.  Most folks choose a product such as Talstar P as it is labeled for spider mites and is known to be gentle on plants.

    Q
I checked with Bayer and they say that Suspend "suppresses" mites meaning it only kills 50% so not sure you
can say it is that effective. Also says this on the label. Have your customers found it effective for bird mites?
    A
Suspend SC is not labeled for bird mites and we do not recommend it for that use. Susped is successfully used for plant infesting mites. It is important to be absolutely sure you are actually dealing with bird mites. Have the suspected bird mite identified by a reputable source, such as your local cooperative extension office or a reputable pest control operator. Treatments will vary for different pests. Treatment for say bedbugs is much different than the treatment for bird mites.  If you do indeed have bird mites, you must first find the source of the infestation, usually a bird nest or a dead bird on or in the home. Removal of the infested nest or bird and a thorough cleanup is necessary. For treatment in the home, we recommend you frequently vacuum all carpet and upholstery and dispose of the bag or vacuum contents in a sealed bag outdoors. Spray Sterifab on couches, chairs and other upholstered furniture where you may spend time resting. Use Cimexa dust in all cracks and crevices around the perimeter of the room. Apply a thin coat of MotherEarth dust to rugs and carpets. Rake (not sweep) nap back and forth, causing dust to enter rug or carpet. Let product sit overnight. Repeat application as necessary and vacuum every 3 - 4 days for effective control. MotherEarth dust does not have a fast knockdown, it can take several days for insects to die after they contact the dust. Onslaught can be used for a faster knockdown. Thoroughly apply as a fine particle broadcast spray using a hand pump sprayer to infested rugs and carpets and other cracks and crevices around the perimeter of each room. Put all clothes through the dryer on high heat to help kill mites and their eggs.We have had many customers use the above recommendations with great success. Most customers report that it can take several months to get rid of all of the mites. Finding and removing the source of the infestation is very important and is the key to getting rid of the mites for good.

  • Asked by Norma from Warrensburg Mo

    Q
Will Suspend SC kill the larvae and eggs of carpet beetles?
    A

Suspend SC will kill adult Carpet Beetles that come into contact with the treated areas. Carpet beetle infestations can be very difficult to control. The best weapon for getting rid of them is to combine cleaning and insecticides.

It is very important that the source of the infestation (where the damaging larva is harboring) is discovered and eliminated, not just the visible adult insects you see wandering around. Until you find out what that is and deal with it you will continue to get more of the carpet beetles emerging from hiding. Carpet beetles may be as likely to feed on grain based food materials as they are on animal byproducts. Pet foods stored in forgotten places, baking goods left too long in the cupboard, rodent baits tossed in the attic - all of these are quite susceptible to carpet beetle feeding. Plus, you also have the typical carpet beetle diets of dead insects (wasp nests in the attic, dead insects in window sills), feathers (bird nests, dead birds), hair (dead rodents, wool products, trophy mounts), and other things made from animal byproducts. Once the source of the infestation is removed or cleaned, using Suspend SC will help get rid of the annoying adult beetles. You can spray once a month until all of the beetles are gone.

Vacuuming: Carpet beetle larvae like to feed in dark, undisturbed locations like closets, attics, basements, and storage areas. The wide availability of food sources for the larvae (including dust and lint, and pet hair) makes vacuuming the best way to ensure there is minimal food for the larvae to feed on. Vacuuming can also help to remove the larvae and adult beetles already in the home. Regular vacuuming and laundering of rugs, furniture, and linens can help to ensure the beetles are removed and have no food source. If you find a contaminated item, bag and remove this item from your home, if possible.

Proper storage: Before storing silks, woolens, or furs, dry clean as the beetles are attracted to stains and soiled garments. Store in a well-sealed container, using mothballs. Mothballs can limit the beetle’s attraction to the wool or silk. Store pet food, dried meat, and other dried animal products in a well-sealed container.

Insecticides: For things that cannot be washed or dry cleaned, insecticides are the best bet for prevention and eradication. You can also mix in Gentrol IGR with your Suspend SC. This will help to break down the reproduction cycle.

Insecticides can be used for spot-treatments, as a boundary at the edges of rugs, under rugs, under furniture, walls and floors of closets, shelving, cracks, and lint or dust accumulating areas. Be careful around oriental rugs or other fabrics, as some insecticides can stain. Never spray clothing or bedding with insecticide, and always read instructions.

  • Asked by Ron from Toano, Va

    Q
How long does Suspend SC typically take to kill?
I have been having a huge Wasp and Carpenter Bee problem this year. My children are too scared to step outside. They cover the bushes out front. My wife and I have counted at least 2 dozen or more at any given time. I have sprayed a 1oz to 1gal mix of Suspend SC to the bushes they congrigate on. I used about 1.5 gallons of mix onto all the bushes. I assume the pole they collect will be taken back to the nest(s) and will infect the queens, eggs, etc. What is typical time to take effect for Flying Insects such as Wasps, Bumble Bees, Carpenter Bees, etc. How long after treatment should I expect to see a reduction in the number of these insects. Also assuming proper exposure to the treated area, what is the typical time for Spiders, etc. to die?
    A
The amount of time it takes Suspend SC to kill will depend on how bad the infestation is. It could generally take 1-2 weeks. The rate that was used of Suspend SC per gallon of water is fine. It is a residual so it does need time for it to work. This treatment can be done every 21 days outdoors.

What is the best pesticide for carpet beetles to use indoors that won't harm a cat?

Insecticides: For things that cannot be washed or dry cleaned, insecticides are the best bet for prevention and eradication. Both Talstar P and Suspend SC are excellent products to use.

They are safe for pets if they are not in the area during the application. The pets can return once the surfaces have completely dried.
