These insects do not truly infest a home as they do not reproduce in the indoor environment, but they may still be abundant inside if their breeding site is close by. Unfortunately, the breeding sites for these flies are so numerous and varied, it is impossible to eliminate them all. These tiny pests are small enough to crawl through the average window screen and fit through cracks and crevices around windows and door frames.
You can help prevent these flies from entering your home by spraying a barrier application of Talstar P paying special attention to window frames, window screens, door frames, and cracks and crevices that may be used as points of entry. A screen with a very fine mesh (smaller than 16mesh) will help prevent entry. Additionally it may be helpful to keep ceiling fans and window fans on at high speeds to keep insects out of small areas.
If flies have already entered your home and you need immediate control use Microcare. This product offers a fast knockdown and kill of flying insects, giving you immediate relief.Sunscald that has caused the bark to split will often heal on its own in otherwise healthy trees. If you experience rapid temperature fluctuations at the end of winter and in early spring, then you may want to wrap trees that are sensitive to this condition to help prevent sunscald. Talstar P is a versatile inseticide concentrate that is safe for use on many ornamentals and is labeled for over 75 pests. Talstar P is also water-based, so it should not cause additional stress to the strees. You may also want to consult an arborist to be sure your trees are receiving enough water to recover from the bark split, and to check if it may need additional nutrients.
First be sure to protect your biggest investment, your home. Put up a barrier using Termidor SC. Please see our article on Barrier Treatments. For the tree, you can inject Dominion 2L.
Please keep your pets out of the Talstar P treated area until dried. After the product is diluted there is only a small enough amount of active ingredient to harm small insects. If your cat were to nibble on a small area no harm should be posed. You may also want to consider having the service not treat where your cat may be nibbling.
MIxing Tengard with Talstar will not make it last any longer and is not actually recommended. Mixing 2 insecticides together can contaminate an area making it highly repellent where insects will avoid it and neither can do their job of killing the insects. If you want a faster knockdown product, you can add something like Exciter. If you want a longer residual you should use something like Suspend Polyzone which can last up to 90 days on outside surfaces.
Talstar is not labeled to treat for grain mites. It would be best to discard if the feed and get new feed. We are not aware of a product that can safely be applied to grains that are intended for feeding purposes. Please also contact your Cooperative Extension office for more treatment options in your area.
The general rule of thumb for insecticide concentrates such as Talstar P is that they are good for about 3-5 years from the date of purchase as long as they have been stored at room temperature. If your Talstar is six years old, it certainly would not hurt anything if you wanted to try to use it, but if you find that it is not working as well as it used to, it may be time for some new product. You may also want to speak with the manufacturer directly to see what they would recommend. You can reach FMC at 800-321-1362.
