When using Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide to treat for mole crickets, it’s very important to treat them at the correct time of the year. Controlling mole crickets soon after they hatch will offer the fastest knockdown of the current population and help avoid damage later in the year. Check areas in your lawn in the spring for damage cause by mole crickets. This is usually in places under and around trees, under and around bushes, around decks and patios, areas were leaf debris has collected, etc. Even though eggs hatch in the summer, damage will not become visible until the following spring, after the immature mole crickets have developed and grown. Applying your insecticide in the spring, can begin to treat those that are hatching in the summer. When treating for mole crickets, you should be using 2.3-4.6 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Be sure that you’re watering in your Talstar XTRA with at at least a half inch of water to ensure it’s moving past the surface of the soil and down into the top layer. The product label has specific instructions regarding mole crickets as follows:
Mole Cricket adults: Achieving acceptable control of adult mole crickets is difficult because preferred grass areas are subject to continuous invasion during the early spring by this extremely active stage. Applications should be made as late in the day as possible and should be watered in with up to 0.5 inches of water immediately after treatment. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application to bring the mole crickets closer to the soil surface where contact with the insecticide will be maximized. Grass areas that receive pressure from adult mole crickets should be treated at peak egg hatch to ensure optimum control of subsequent nymph populations (see below). Mole Cricket nymphs: Grass areas that received intense adult mole cricket pressure in the spring should be treated immediately prior to peak egg hatch. Optimal control is achieved at this time because young nymphs are more susceptible to insecticides and they are located near the soil surface where the insecticide is most concentrated. Control of larger, more damaging, nymphs later in the year may require both higher application rates and more frequent applications to maintain acceptable control. Applications should be made as late in the day as possible and should be watered in with up to 0.5 inches of water immediately after treatment. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application to bring the mole crickets closer to the soil surface where contact with the insecticide will be maximized.

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not give usage instructions for all of the different spreaders on the market. Here is how they suggest calibrating your spreader:
If you need to use 1.5-4.6 lbs of product per 1,000 sq ft you would add the needed amount of product to spreader, start with a medium setting, then apply product to a 20 x 50 ft area (1,000 sq ft). If you have product left, your setting is too low. If you run out of product, your setting is too high.
Be sure to read the product label to determine the usage rate for your needs.
No, Talstar XTRA Granules would not be effective for mosquito control. The adult mosquitoes actually hang out in trees and bushes and the larva develop in standing water. Talstar XTRA granules can only be used to treat lawns and soil for insect infestation. You can use Bifen IT which is the liquid formulation of Bifen to treat for adult mosquitoes. Mosquito larva can be eliminated with BTI Mosquito Dunks which can be placed directly into water sources such as ponds, unused pools and other areas of standing water.
Talstar Xtra Granules is an excellent choice when treating for fire ants, it will leave you a long residual that will continue killing the ants after applied. It contains two active ingredients to work for the fire ants, and you can get quite a bit of coverage out of one bag. You will use 50-100 lbs of product per acre, and they are sold in 25lb bags. This is the most economical way for you to treat fire ants effectively. Please refer to the product label for further instruction.
