    Q
What is the setting for Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide using a Ryobi 18v spreader settings?
    A

The Taltar Xtra label does not specifically list settings for the Ryobi 18v, but it does list the Scotts SpeedyGreen 2000 and its spreader settings. If this is what you meant, or those two spreaders are compatible with settings, you can use setting 2 3/4 for putting out 1.15 lbs per 1000 sq/ft, 5 1/4 for 2.3lbs per 1000 sq/ft, or 9 for putting out 4.6 lbs per 1000 sq/ft. Otherwise, if your settings do not match up, you would want to calibrate your spreader for the product. Here are instructions on how to calibrate your spreader.

    How to calibrate your spreader:

Almost all fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc have treatments in amounts of so much product per 1000 square feet.  So if you can figure out what your walking speed is then you know anytime you apply any product that calls for so much of it per 1000 square feet, you always set your spreader on this setting.  You can calibrate this by marking off a 1000 square foot (10 x 100) area and placing the required amount of product in pounds in the spreader.  Start with a low setting and start walking your marked off area at a normal pace.  You can adjust as you go and find the basic setting for you to apply the product over 1000 square feet.

    Q
Talstar Xtra w/Verge applied around base of orange tree for fire ants
I realized too late that Talstar should not be applied around base of my orange tree one year ago. I have been discarding all fruit since then. How long will the oranges be poisoned? When would we be able to eat the oranges again? Thank you.
    A

After an application of Talstar Xtra Granules around an orange tree, we recommend to skip harvesting and discarding the fruit for at least a year.

    Q
Could I use Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide for chinch bugs, fleas, and fire ants and around my numerous fruit trees?
    A

Talstar XTRA is the best option for your target pests, however this has to stay away from edibles. You would only apply Talstar Xtra outside the dripline/root of the trees. If you need something closer to the tree then the next best option is Essentria All Purpose Insecticide Concentrate.

    Q
When do you recommend the first application of the year using Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide for Northern Virginia?
    A

Talstar XTRA Granules application timing depends on the target pest but generally starts before they are active and once every other month or every 3 months. Typically spring would be a great time to start as long as you do not have any more snowfall and the ground is not frozen.

    Q
I want to rotate my insecticide for the fall application.
I use Arena for suppression and treatment of chinch bugs and sod webworms and Merit for my grub control during the year. What group or product would you recommend for my November use? Thanks
    A

Arena and Talstar Xtra would be great to rotate with if you choose to do so, another option is Acelepryn G for all 3 issues.  It takes years of exposure to one certain active for insects to develop resistance to a product, so generally you do not need to rotate every season.

    Q
Will Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide work best to treat for leaf ants on a property with sugar sand.
I live on sugar sand and have those leaf ants everywhere. They strip every plant overnight of all leaves. Which Telstar product would be best to kill these?
    A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide will get rid of most ant species except for Pharoah ants.
Leaf cutter ants can be a difficult pest to get rid of. The colonies are large and the ants make their own food so poison baits only have limited effects on this species of ants. Plants can be protected temporarily using dust or granular formulations of contact insecticides, like acephatecarbaryl or permethrin. but such treatments must be reapplied frequently. Also, plant applications do little to eliminate the underground nest.According to several university websites, Maxforce Complete Granules containing hydramethlynon are some what effective, though they will usually eliminate only about 30% of a large colony in one treatment and will need to be reapplied several times.  DeltaGard granules is one of the only products actually labeled for leaf cutter ants. The product label recommends treating the mound directly and lightly watering the granules in.
Again, it may take several treatments to get the desired results. Since Leafcutter Ant nests may extend deep underground and are often located near bodies of water, call your local cooperative extension office for their recommendations before using any insecticide spray.

    Q
What is the difference between Talstar XTRA and Talstar PL?
    A

Talstar Xtra has an additional active ingredient, which is zeta-cypermethrin (they both contain bifenthrin). It also is less dusty and all the granules are uniform in size. Talstar PL granules are a sandy granule. They both cover a broad range of pests and can be used in your lawn, commercial areas and recreational areas.
