Talstar XTRA Granules is safe for all lawn types when used as directed on the product label.
There is not a waiting period between application of insecticides and herbicides unless the product label expressly prohibits it. Talstar XTRA generally lasts 60-90 days, depending on pest pressure. You can view more tips in our Warm Season Turf Guide.
You will use 2.3 to 4.6 lbs of Talstar XTRA Granules per 1000 sq. ft. to treat for crane fly larvae. Keep in mind that treatments should be made to control early to mid-season larvae (approximately August – February) as they feed on plant crowns. Treatments made to late-season larvae (approximately March - April) may only provide suppression. It would be a good idea to contact your local cooperative extension office to get a recommendation for the best time to apply in your area.
The manufacturer does not list this particular model spreader on the Talstar XTRA Granules product label. We typically recommend that if you need to use 1.5-4.6 lbs of product per 1,000 sq. ft., you would add the needed amount of product to spreader, start with a medium setting, then apply product to a 20 x 50 ft area (1,000 sq ft). If you have product left, your setting is too low. If you run out of product, your setting is too high. If this does not help, you can also contact FMC directly for assistance with calibrating your spreader at 800-321-1362. Scott's also has a Spreader Settings Tool available on their website here.

Yes, Talstar XTRA Granules can be used around a home that has pets. Talstar XTRA is a granule that would be applied with a broadcast spreader and then watered in by 1/4 inch of irrigation or rainfall to activate the product. Once you have watered in the Talstar XTRA and allow it to completely dry, Talstar XTRA is completely safe for pets.
Talstar XTRA Granules works best if irrigated (or it rains) after application to release the active ingredient. If it rained 8 hours after application dried, it will last for a couple of months before another application is needed.
Talstar XTRA Granules should be applied with a granular spreader.
Talstar XTRA Granules is labeled for Chinch Bugs. For control of Chinch Bugs, it is recommended to use 2.3 to 4.6 Lbs/1000 sq ft (100-200 lbs per acre). Irrigate with up to 0.25 inches of water immediately after application to activate (release from the granule) the insecticide. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher applications rates may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer.
Do not broadcast Talstar XTRA Granules more than 0.5 lb. ai. per acre (4.6 lbs per 1000 sq. ft.) per year.
Talstar XTRA Granules are for outdoor use only. We do offer Talstar P, which contains the same acitve ingredient, that can be mixed at 1 oz. per gallon of water and applied quarterly indoors to cracks and crevices.
Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide might kill those grasshoppers that contact a treated area but it is not labeled for them so would not be recommended for control. A liquid bifenthrin product would be a better option. You should start applications before the grasshoppers have a chance to hatch. You should thoroughly spray your lawn and water in the application with about a .25 in of water to help the bifenthrin get past the thatch layer and into the soil where grass hoppers actually develop. If you already have grasshoppers you can use Talstar P at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per 1 gallon of water for the quickest knockdown.
Per the product label for Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide for Mound Ant Treatment: Apply 1/2 cup of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide Featuring Verge Granule Technology per mound and then drench the mound with 1 to 2 gallons of water. The mound should be drenched with sufficient force to break its apex and allow the insecticide to flow into the ant tunnels. Treat three feet out around the mound. For best results, apply in cool weather (65 to 80?F) or in early morning or late evening hours. Treat new mounds as they appear

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide cannot be mixed with water and applied with a sprayer. If you need to use something that is applied that way, you can use Talstar P, which is the liquid formulation.
Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide will get rid of most ant species except for Pharoah ants. Another great product that is labeled for big headed ants is InVict Blitz Ant Granules and these do not need to be watered in.
