Product Overview

Taurus SC Termiticide Insecticide with 9.1% Fipronil provides best-in-class control of termites, ants and a wide variety of other insect pests including roaches, spiders, centipedes and many more. This professional termiticide is labeled to treat for subterranean termites, arborel termites, drywood termites, and dampwood termites.  Taurus SC is a non-repellent insecticide that is undetectable to target pests. This allows the pests to touch, ingest, and spread the insecticide throughout their entire colony. Taurus SC will eliminate termite colonies in less than 90 days on average, and ant infestations can be controlled in just a few weeks.

Taurus SC is NOT labeled for Fire Ants.

Please follow all label directions carefully before use.

How Taurus SC Works

Taurus SC Termiticide contains the non-repellent active ingredient the  Fipronil. Fipronil belongs to the phenylpyrazole family of insecticides, acting primarily as a GABA inhibitor, attacking the central nervous system of target pests. Fipronil is extremely effective, yet it works slowly enough on target insect pests to take advantage of the natural food-sharing habits of social insects, particularly termites and ants. This means that the fipronil in Taurus SC spreads throughout the entire colony, killing not just those insects that come in contact with the direct spray or residual, but all the others they contact, resulting in colony elimination.

Target Pests

Subterranean termites, ants, cockroaches, occasional perimeter invaders

PESTS CONTROLLED: Ants (acrobat, Argentine, big-headed, carpenter, crazy, odorous, pavement, pharaoh, thief), Asian lady beetles, darkling beetles, Australian cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, smoky brown cockroaches, Black widow spiders, brown recluse spiders, cellar spiders, hobo spiders, Box-elder bugs, Pill bugs, Brown and dog ticks, Centipedes, Cluster flies, European earwigs, House crickets, Millipedes, Paper wasps (NOT a knockdown agent), Silverfish, Yellow jackets, Subterranean termites (including Reticulitermes, Zootermopsis, Heterotermes, Coptotermes)

Target Uses

Taurus SC is a generic version of the termiticide most widely used by professional pest control companies. Taurus SC is designed for the prevention and treatment of termite infestations, and it can be applied either pre-construction or post-construction. Taurus SC is also labeled for the outdoor perimeter control of many common invaders, most effectively for ants. Because of its efficacy and longevity, termite treatments with Taurus SC may last up to 10 years, and outdoor perimeter treatments only need to be applied twice per year. Taurus SC may also be used in structural wall voids to treat active subterranean termite and ant infestations. Taurus SC is not for general indoor use.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Fipronil 9.1%

Taurus SC Application Instructions

Always read the product label completely before use.

Outside Barrier Treatment:

The main use for Taurus SC is for protection against subterranean termite infestations. To accomplish this, an outside barrier treatment is made in the ground around the foundation of the home that will protect against termites for up to 10 years or more.

First, you will need to dig a 6 inches deep x 6 inches wide trench around the outside foundation wall of the home. Next, mix 0.8 fl. oz. of Taurus SC per gallon of water and apply at a rate of 4 mixed gallons per every 10 lineal feet of trench. It is best to use a 5 gallon bucket and mark off the 4 gallon line, then mix 4 gallons of Taurus SC at a time and pour it in the trench. Allow the solution to soak into the soil and then replace the back-fill, making sure that the back-fill is soaked with Taurus SC as well. When you are done, you should have one contiguous in-ground barrier of Taurus SC all the way around the home.

Treating across slabs of concrete touching the house (such as a back patio or front porch) can be accomplished by using a hammer drill with a 1/2-inch drill bit. Holes are drilled through the concrete approximately 3-4 inches out from the house and every 12 inches across the concrete slab. Please see the product label for more information.

For more information please see the article: How to do a Termite Treatment.

Each 20 oz. bottle of concentrate yields 25 gallons of finished solution. Each 78 oz. bottle of concentrate yields 97 gallons of finished solution.

Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Ratios for Taurus SC

  • 0.8 fl. oz. (24 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.06% a.i. – most applications, ground termite treatments, ant or other perimeter pest control.
  • 1.2 fl. oz. (35 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.09% a.i. – may be used for active infestations or severe termite pressure.
  • 1.6 oz. (47 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.125% a.i. – areas of dense soil that will not accept a rate of 4 gal. per 10 linear feet; only use 2 gal. per 10 linear feet per foot of depth.
  • Apply at a rate of 4 gallons of finished solution per 10 linear feet for perimeter termite applications.
  • Apply at a rate of 1-1.5 gallon(s) of finished solution per 10 square feet of horizontal ground that will be under concrete slabs (pre-construction).
  • For perimeter pest treatments (ants, etc.), apply 2 quarts of 0.06% spray per 160 lineal feet.

Taurus SC is for use in the following areas:

Outside surfaces and along foundation of Residential, institutional, commercial and industrial buildings and utility enclosures; wall voids of listed structures; NOT for indoor use; for pre-construction and post-construction treatment for termites, including concrete structures such as patios, porches, sidewalks and foundation slabs; concrete slab (including monolithic, floating and supported concrete slabs) on ground or in basements; hollow block foundations or voids in masonry; structures with French drains and sump pumps; basement structures; crawl spaces; around bath traps and shower drains; posts, poles, and wood landscape ornamentation.

Indoors

Taurus SC is not for Indoor use. The only permitted use indoors is for active ant or termite infestations in wall voids only.

Treating Live Termite Infestations above ground:

To control Aerial termite colonies or Drywood Termites, mix 0.8 fl. oz. of Taurus SC per gallon of water and apply to infested wooden members or voids. To treat inaccessible areas (for example, if the termite infestation is behind dry wall), drill and inject Taurus SC into the damaged wood of void spaces with a crack and crevice injector. Foam applications can also be made into void spaces.

Outdoors

Termite Control – See general directions above. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment for more details.

How to Use Taurus SC for Ant Control:

For outdoor control of Ants and other perimeter pests, mix 0.8 fl. oz. of Taurus SC per gallon of water and apply using a hand-pump sprayer around the outside of the home, spraying 1 foot up the side of the house and 1 foot out from the house, all the way around the home. Also spray around any exterior openings where pests may enter such as doors (don't spray near door handles), windows, pipes, cracks, vents, holes, etc. Make sure to treat the joint where exterior siding (wood, vinyl, aluminum or other similar materials) meets the cement, brick or block foundation. Treat anywhere electrical, cable or telephone wires enter the house. This application should be made only twice per year, in the Spring and Fall. Taurus SC works well enough that only 2 applications per year are needed for effective control.

Also be careful to prune away vegetation including shrubs and tree branches that may be touching the side of the house. This will keep pests from using shrubs and tree branches to bypass the protective barrier you sprayed.

Taurus SC Termiticide Features

  • Easier, faster, and more effective than termite bait stations.
  • Foam applications may be made in voids for above ground termite infestations.
  • Water-based suspension.
  • Broad labeling for control of perimeter pests.
  • Convenient tip-and-pour bottle eliminates the need for other measuring equipment.

Extra Tips

  • Do not make applications when precipitation is occurring.
  • Do not treat soil that is water-saturated or frozen.
  • Do not apply Taurus SC in any way that may contaminate a water source or within 5 feet of a well or cistern. Treatment within 5-10 feet of wells or cisterns must be done by backfill method only (removing the dirt to be treated and replacing it after it has been treated elsewhere or in a container such as a wheelbarrow).
  • Do not treat edible vegetation or treat within one foot out from the drip line of edible plants.
  • Do not exceed 2 applications per year for perimeter pests.
  • Do not apply to pet quarters or to playground equipment.

California Restrictions:

  • Application Rates: 0.03% 4 times per year at no less than 60-day intervals.
  • Perimeter foundation spray band: 6 inches up x 6 inches out.
  • Do not use between November 1 and February 28.
  • Do not apply to garage doors, driveway, vertical surfaces above the driveway or garage door, or to cracks and crevices leading or adjacent to the driveway such as the expansion joint between.
  • Carpenter ant use in above ground localized areas not registered in California.
  • Wood-infesting beetle or borer uses not registered in California.
  • Carpenter ant use in trees or nonstructural wood or wood-to-ground contacts not registered in California.

IT WORKS!!! Three days after the perimeter of my house was sprayed, no more ants! In twelve years Taurus SC is the only thing that has even touched the ant problem. Now they're gone!

    Unsure

    By Mike on 05/20/2016

It's only been a week or 2 since we used the product. We bought it obviously to kill/prevent termites but since it said it kills ants we were excited about that since ants seem to be in excess this year. Well so far it hasn't killed the ants they just keep crawling across the surface even though we dug trenches all around the house and sprayed the top surface twice. I'm hoping it works soon and I would reconsider upping my review rating when or if that happens. At this point though if it doesn't kill the ants I'm not confident that it will kill or prevent termites and afraid I wasted my money.

    Expert ResponseExpert response:
Please be sure you r expectations are in line with how the product works. Taurus is undetectable to ants so they will readily cross over treated areas. In can take 3-4 weeks to see an ant population start to be effected by the product, Ant treatment are much different than termite treatments. You must treat 2 ft up foundation, 2 ft out onto ground and around windows, doors nd other entry points. Have you treated these areas? Please let us know.

    Taurus SC

    By Wally on 06/12/2012

Taurus is a non-repelling insecticide. Following the directions for termite treatment I trenched at the perimeter of my home, sprayed and put the dirt back in. The product works great. It has been two years since I treated my property. So far no signs of harm to good insects because my flowering trees and plants are pollinating just fine. I have recommended this product to my homeowner's association.

    Excellent product

    By Tim on 11/07/2011

This product is very handy to use with the squeezable pre-measured dispenser with separate cap. It allows the user to measure small amounts to apply in tight spaces when a watering can is used and only one or two gallons are needed at a time. Complete instructions are attached to the bottle so you always have them handy for reference. The same stuff the professionals use at a fraction of the cost!

Does Taurus SC compare to Dursban?

I have someone in my family that is terribly reactive to Dursban, will this react the same way?

Q
Is Taurus the best ant control for lawns?
A
Taurus is a great product for ant control but it can only be used on or within one foot of a structure. You cannot use Taurus out in the lawn as this type of treatment is prohibited by the Taurus product label. We do have a wide variety of ant bait granules and insecticides that you can use out in the lawn to control ants. You can find these products by going to our Ant Control Page.

Q
Will Taurus SC control scorpions?
A
While Taurus SC may actually kill scorpions that cross over treated areas we do not recommend it for scorpion control because it can take many days for insects to die after crossing over treated areas. Instead you should consider using Cy-Kick CS or Demon WP which will stay up on porous treated surfaces a bit better and will offer a much faster kill.

Q
Can I mix Suspend SC and Taurus SC in the same spray apparatus so that I can put out at one time.
A
Taurus SC is a non-repellent insecticide. This means that ants and other insects cannot tell that it is there and they will readily walk over treated areas. Taurus SC also has a delayed reaction time and a transfer effect which allows the ants time to get back to the colony and spread it around before they succumb to the effects of the product. Suspend SC on the other hand is synthetic pyrethroid which many sensitive insects such as ants can detect. Ants may avoid the areas treated with Suspend and those ants that do cross over treated areas are the only ones that will be killed by the product. Suspend does not have a transfer effect so it will not be transferred back to the colony. While the Taurus SC will not actually be deactivated by Suspend, it will be much less effective if it is sprayed with Suspend.

Q
Crawl space treatment

We have a crawl space under our house. I learned from your website, how to do the trenching-treatment around the house. How do you treat the crawl space. We have house sitting on concrete blocks.

A
For a termite treatment, you will want to trench around and treat the soil surrounding any part of your home that touches the ground. This mens that you would treat the crawlspace area the same as you would around the exterior of your home. Dig a 6x6 inch deep trench around any post or cinder blocks in the crawlspace and pour the Taurus SC mixture into that soil.
