Water Soluble Fertilizer

Water-soluble fertilizer provides the extra boost of nutrients your plants and lawn need to thrive. The fertilizer can be dissolved in the same water used to irrigate plants, making it easy to fertilize and hydrate your plants at the same time. Water-soluble fertilizers also decrease the risk of chemical burn in high heat.

Water Soluble Fertilizers Basics

This type of fertilizer can make fertilizing a bit easier, especially for home gardeners. These fertilizers are generally sold as granules that dissolve completely in water, which allows for multiple application methods. A common brand that almost every gardener has used or seen others use is Miracle-Gro, for example, like this all-purpose version. This type of fertilizer can be a bit more expensive than other types, but the nutrients are immediately available to plants. Since the nutrients get diluted in water, they can be completely absorbed by the plant’s root system. When used properly, you will be able to avoid fertilizer burn and chemical and nutrient runoff that can contaminate waterways.

Using Water Soluble Fertilizers

Water soluble fertilizers are ideal for small scale applications, especially for container plants. They are popular with greenhouse growers and are fairly easy to apply. Here are some tips for using this fertilizer correctly:

  • Since they can be dissolved in water, they are almost always dissolved in the same water used to irrigate the plants. This method allows you to both water and fertilize your plants at the same time.
  • A common method is to use the fertilizer each time you water, adding a small amount to the irrigation water in your watering can or irrigation system. This method is supposed to give plants a consistent stream of nutrients.
  • You also have the option of adding a water soluble fertilizer to your plants as needed, or on a schedule, like once a week.
  • There is much less risk of burning your plant’s roots by over fertilization with this type of fertilizer. However, it is still very important to read and follow all directions and recommended rates carefully.
