    Q
Does Bifen XTS kill white flies on citrus trees without harming the plant?
    A
While Bifen XTS is labeled for white flies it's not labeled to be used on citrus trees. To treat white flies on citrus trees you can use somehing like Bayer Advanced Fruit, Citrus and Vegetable Insect Control. We recommend you read the label to make the proper application.

    Q
Bifen XTS or IT for Sod worms/lawn moths
Will Bifen work on sod webworms, if so, what is proper application. If not, what do you recommend?
    A
Both Bifen IT and Bifen XTS are labeled for sod worms and moths. They can both be broadcast across your lawn as well. The biggest difference between the two is that Bifen IT is water based and Bifen XTS is oil based. Bifen XTS also has more of the active ingredient in the solution.

    Q
What is the best method for exterminating pine shoot borers?
My trees are 25' tall. Every pine, Colorado, Austrian, spruce, etc has the same withered main shoot problem - 15+ trees. Trees growing out not up. I need to reach the tops. Renting equipment every couple weeks to cover new growth is too costly and I do not want to overuse, adding agents to the environment in a plume. Hose sprayers at this angle do not work properly, they should be level.
    A
When using Bifen XTS to eradicate pine shoot borers, you will use 6.4 to 12.8 fl. oz. per 100 gallons of water. If you are using a smaller amount, such as a gallon sprayer, you will use .06 fl. oz. per gallon of water. Treat the trunks and lower branches before adult emergence.

    Q
In a metered hose end sprayer(1-10 ounce per sprayed gallon) what should it be set on for yard spraying?
    A
When using Bifen XTS, you will have to mix 1.6 fl. oz. in at least 5 gallons of water. When using a hose end sprayer, be careful to use the correct amount of water for the dilution rates.

    Q
We need a control for winter moth caterpillar on fruit trees. We are located in Massachusetts.
    A
We do not recommend applying Bifen XTS to edibles. For treating fruit trees for moth caterpillars, we would recommend applying Bonide Fruit Tree Spray. Please refer to the product label for complete mixing and application times for the fruits on your trees. Please let us know if you need anything else.

    Q
Is it okay to use Bifen XTS over an area that was sealed with an oil based sealant?
The underside of our camper is "raw" (unfinished) OSB, so, it cannot be treated / painted with any water base material. I want to "seal" this area and protect it from wood bees. So, the idea is to treat this area with an oil base insecticide, let dry well, then paint it with an oil base sealer or primer. Will low odor paint thinner or mineral spirits affect the pesticide properties of Bifen XTS? Or would a different product be better?
    A
We recommend applying the sealant on first before performing a treatment with insecticides. When using Bifen XTS it is possible that it will affect the sealant put down prior because of the xylene base in the Bifen XTS product. With the possiblity of Bifen XTS having an affect on the sealant we recommend using Bifen I/T which is water based and has the same active ingredient as Bifen XTS. Bifen I/T as well as Bifen XTS are both highly toxic to bees.

  • Asked by Michael from Long Valley, Nj
    05/29/2015
    Q
Looking to control deer ticks and mosquitoes in NJ, what are the best products or combinations?
    A

Talstar P would be a great choice for indoor and outdoor tick control. We also recommend adding an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to Talstar to stop the ticks from being able to mature while you are trying to eliminate the infestation. You will use 1 oz of Talstar +  1oz of Archer IGR per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft area. Do not make spot applications. Treat the entire area where exposure to ticks may occur. Use more water (not more product) when treating areas with dense ground cover or heavy leaf litter. Ticks may be reintroduced from surrounding areas on host animals. Retreatment may be necessary to achieve and/or maintain control during periods of high pest pressure. All of your pets should be treated with a product that is specifically labeled for use on pets for tick control.

You can also help by creating a "tick safe zone" in your yard. You should have an area that is at least 9 ft wide between your yard and any wooded area. Trim back trees to allow as much sunlight as possible into your yard. Keep grass as short. Remove as much leaf litter as possible. A clearly defined, well manicured border between your yard and any wooded areas or weedy lots will reduce the chance of ticks infesting your yard.

Talstar P is also very great for treating mosquitoes. You will make sure to apply a monthly exterior treatment (focusing on the undersides fo the tree leaves). The combination of both Talstar and NyGuard IGR is great for mosquito and tick control. Please let us know if you need anything else.

    Q
Can I use Bifen XTS on my orange tree that has some bugs and is distressed?
    A
Bifen XTS should NOT be applied to anything edible including orange trees. We recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office for a proper identification of the insect and/or disease that is causing the tree distress. Please let us know what you are treating for exactly and we will be able to find you a product that will fit your specific needs.

    Q
I just placed an order for Bifen XTS for fleas at my house. Can I use it indoors also?
After I placed the order I saw where the bifen IT is for indoors. Really can't afford both products. I have had to leave my dog at my parents until I can get rid of these fleas so she can come home. I don't want to use the bifen XTS in the house if it will harm my dog. Am hoping to use this product indoors and outdoors (maybe adjust the product/water mixture??) I tried to call you but it was after hours. Thanks.
    A
No, Bifen XTS is not labeled for indoor use. We would recommend using Onslaught Insecticide with an IGR (insect growth regulator) for indoor use. This can be sprayed in the areas where fleas are present. You will vacuum daily for 14 days and do a second treatment.

    Q
Would Bifen XTS be a good (residual) alternative to Bifen granules to rid of a springtail infestation?
I've seen suggestions of Cyonara + Bifen Granules but I wonder if Bifen XTS alone would accomplish the same to rid of springtails.
    A
Bifen XTS is labeled for springtails. You will use 1/6 fl. oz. per gallon of water. This will be broadcast across the areas where springtails have been seen outdoors and around ornamentals. Using one insecticide is enough.

    Q
What sprayer has a large spray swath for a large yard?
Spray pattern with hand pump sprayer, even at broadest setting, isn't very wide-which makes lawn coverage rather tedious. Any other suggestion, apart from hose end sprayers which are not recommended for lack of accurate mix?
    A
The 9 gallon Master Gardener Cart Sprayer may fit your needs well.
It can be pulled or towed by your riding lawn mower or 4 wheeler. The rechargeable 12 volt battery has a 2 hour run time before it needs to be recharged. The tank has a coiled hose that you can spot spray with, or you can use the front mounted nozzle which allows you to spray a 50" swath at a time. This tank is ideal for applying insecticides and herbicides and can handle just about any terrain with its 12" tank mounted wheels.

    Q
Can Bifen XTS be used when temperature exceeds 85?
    A
We would not recommend using Bifen XTS at temperatures over 85 degrees as this is an oil based product and can burn plants it comes into contact with under extreme heat. We recommend spraying in early morning or late evening.
