    Pleasantly surprised

    By Sandra on 11/02/2021

My centipede lawn began to be inundated with Bermuda grass for the first time in 20 yrs last spring. I was desperate for a solution but could find nothing that would work, be safe on centipede, or be sold in a huge quantity costing a small fortune As recommended online I resorted to Roundup; killing the Bermuda AND the centipede and then digging it all up. A horrible job! Finally I decided to chat with someone at Do My Own on the off chance they could help. They recommended Bonide Grass Beater II Over the Top and said it would be safe for centipede. Although late in the season I did a spot application with a spreader sticker as directed on the label. I see results! The Bermuda grass has turned and the centipede is fine. I am cautiously optimistic that if I use it as soon as I see the Bermuda starting to grow I might be able to beat it. Hopefully I am able to replace the centipede sod in the early spring and will be able to control the Bermuda going forward.

    Works on Bermudagrass!!

    By Sandra on 01/23/2022

    Verified Purchase

On Do My Own customer service recommendation I purchased Bonide Grass Beater II Over The Top Grass Killer to combat invasive bermudagrass in my coastal NC centipede lawn. I hadn't been able to find any product safe to use on centipede, so I had resorted to Roundup and killed half my back lawn in order to get rid of the bermudagrass. How I wish I had called Do My Own sooner!! I did a spot application of the Bonide Grass Beater late last season and was overjoyed that it killed the bermudagrass and not the centipede. I know that it will be a battle, but I am optimistic that I can now keep the bermudagrass under control with regular, conscientious Bonide Grass Beater applications without killing, digging up, and resodding my entire centipede lawn. Thank you!

Bonide Grass Beater II Over-The-Top Grass Killer

    By James on 09/15/2023

I'm always skeptical, but needed a product to kill both Grab Grass & Bermuda Grass. Instructions had something new: Don't apply if temp. + humidity = 150 or higher; had to wait about 3-weeks to apply it. Said to expect results in from 1-3 weeks (yuck, slow). Don't know if Surfactant makes a difference, but I always use it for weeds. I didn't trust BGBII not kill or hurt my Centipede grass, even though supposedly safe. Did two different selective sprays of 3-weeks apart, a gallon-mix each time. Crabgrass showed signs of dying after 1-week, but Bermuda took 2-wks to show. Plus, I overlapped to some nearby Centipede. Crab & Bermuda grasses dead, Centipede doing well! No complaints here! Don't know about other grasses, but will still do selective sprays to protect my Centipede.

    I could have wished ....

    By Benjamin on 05/22/2023

So, here is where I wish I could write a positive review of this rather-costly product. Four times I meticulously followed the instructions and sprayed areas with a special sprayer where lawn grass was growing in places of ground cover plants and my moss lawn. 5 weeks later, nothing happened,, as in 'nothing' - not even after four times of spraying. You'd think I'd added fertilizer since the grass is flourishing! Maybe it was never designed for killing lawn grass, or for Zone 5 but it did not live up to its title: 'grass killer'. I could have wished ......

    Expert ResponseExpert response:
Bonide Grass Beater II is only labeled for some turfgrasses that can invade ground covers, it does not work for all types. Only bermudagrass, orchardgrass seeding and Tall Fescue Seedling are listed as controlled along with other grassy weeds that are not considered desirable turfgrasses in areas, any others have not been tested or it was not effective on it

Bermuda Grass Killer - Bonide Grass Beater

    By Kent on 12/01/2023

It takes 2 weeks for the Bermuda to start to turn brown during this time of year in FL. There is some question as to whether it will indeed kill the Bermuda, but it is starting off well. My goal is to save the St Augustine underneath the Bermuda so that I will not have to resod my yard in the spring.( thanks to a pest control company that "blew it" after 35 years. I would give it a higher rating if I knew for sure that it works. BTW I am simply misting the Grass Beater over the Bermuda and not heavy spraying it

Q
Can Bonide Grass Beater II Over - The - Top Grass Killer be used to kill crabgrass in a centipede lawn?
A

Bonide Grass Beater II Over - The - Top Grass Killer is not labeled to be used in lawns, only Flower beds, Ground covers, Vegetable gardens, and around Shrubs and trees.

For actively growing crabgrass, Blindside WDG is safe for warm season turfgrasses such as centipede, St. Augustine, bermudagrass, & zoysiagrass and applied at the rate of 0.15 to 0.23 oz per 1000 sq ft.

For pre emergent applications (early spring/late fall), selective pre emergents containing the active ingredient Dithiopyr is known to provide superior results in stopping crabgrass germination when applied when soil temps are just below 55 degrees.

Q
Will Bonide Grass Beater II Over - The - Top Grass Killer kill torpedograss in my without harming my centipede grass?
A

Bonide Grass Beater II Over - The - Top Grass Killer is not labeled for control of torpedo grass, nor is it labeled for use on centipede turfgrass. Unfortunately, most products labeled for control of torpedograss are not safe to use on centipede. Solitare WSL Herbicide can be used on centipede at labeled rates, and it can suppress torpedograss (so it would not provide 100% control). Otherwise, you would just need to spot treat using a non-selective herbicide
