    Q
How do I apply Boracare for wood decaying fungus in a crawl space?
Do you recommend a 1:1 ratio for existing areas of wood decaying fungus? If so, a 1:1 ratio will take a lot of chemical to treat the whole crawl space under my house - is it ok to spot treat with 1:1 ratio only affected areas and then spray 5:1 ratio for prevention everywhere else? And would I need to wait for spot treatment to dry first before spraying 5:1 ratio or could I just spray around it? Final question, should I spray first and then come back later and put down my vapor barrier? (I saw comment about spray being sticky.)
    A

When using Boracare to treat for an active infestation of wood fungus it is applied at a 1:1 ratio for wood that is 4" thick or greater. Use a 3:1 dilution ratio for wood less than 4" in thickness.  You can spot treat the areas that have active fungus and then use the 5:1 for future prevention in the non effected areas.  You should be sure to address the moisture issue in the area before or during treatment of Boracare and apply a vapor barrier after the product has dried. Please see the product label for complete application instructions.

    Q
Does Boracare work on different species of wood boring beetles?
Does Boracare work on all of the following wood boring beetle species, old world lyctus beetle southern lyctus beetle western lyctus beetle Pacific deathwatch beetle black Polycaon leadcable borer. Also, does the product need to be applied to the area of infestation only, or does one need to apply to surrounding areas to stop any spreading?
    A

Boracare is labeled for the follwoing types of beetles, Old House Borers, Longhorn Beetles and Ambrosia Beetles, Anobiid and Lyctid Powderpost Beetles.  It is best to apply to the entire piece of wood and surrounding raw wood to treat current infestations and protect from future infestations.

    Q
Can BoraCare be used on previously infested termite wood?
We have had a termidor treatment for subterranean termites drilled into slab/around house perimeter for an active infestation as well as some foaming around the activity indoors. However, I would like to know if we can still apply the boracare to the previously affected wood that we are still leaving in place to prevent future infestation? Can we use this product to spray the previously affected areas to prevent future further damage to these already affected pieces?
    A

Yes, BoraCare may be used on wood that is currently and/or previously infested by termites. Please read the product label for complete use instructions.

    Q
Does BoraCare overspill stay sticky on plastic floor tarps?
I'm going to paint/spray on a wood ceiling. Is the overspray/drippage onto my plastic floor tarps going to dry completely so it's not a problem walking on them and I can use the tarps again? Or is the overspray/drippage always going to be sticky since it's going to be sitting on the surface of the plastic instead of soaking into bare wood?
    A

The water that Boracare is mixed with will eventually evaporate, and it will dry. You could also wash the product off the tarp and reuse it.

    Q
Does the second coat of Boracare have to be applied within a certain time?
Does a 2nd coat of BoraCare have to be applied (painted or sprayed) before the first coat dries? I'm concerned the 2nd coat might not penetrate adequately if the 1st coat is totally dry because I wasn't able to do the 2nd coat for several days or longer.
    A

Per Boracare's label you need to allow the first application to dry by waiting at least 20 minutes in between applications. For some applications, like when treating for Subterranean or Formosan termites, you may need to wait at least an hour between applications.

    Q
How do I remove a crystal-like residue from Boracare treatment?
I applied Boracare to beams and stair tread with active powder post beetles. I applied two coats and it took about a week to dry. I now have a crystal residue on the unfinished wood. How can I clean the crystal residue so that I can apply the stains and oil finish?
    A

Boracare can create a crystal-like residue if heavily applied. You can wipe the residue away with water and soap.

    Q
Will Boracare treat insects in pine wood?
I have a 2x4 piece of pine wood that is near my shallow well water pump that has a hole on the 4" side about a foot long and I find sawdust on my pump, what is the insect and how can I get rid of it.
    A
This could be numerous types of wood destroying insects. We would recommend to apply Boracare to the wood very directly with a paint brush.

    Q
Is Boracare harmful? Do I have to leave the house while treatment? If so, how long do I have to stay away
    A
Depending on where you are applying Boracare, we would recommend using a respirator mask. We would also recommend leaving the area until the product has had time to dry. Generally, this could take 4-5 hours depending on the amount of product that was applied.

    Q
I heard that glycol will penetrate a wood that's painted w/o effecting the finish.
Can I paint Bora Care directly onto a painted finish in its undiluted state, such that it will penetrate the finish and the wood to provide a protective barrier. I know you are supposed to drill the wood, but that's not possible everywhere so I was wondering if this would have any protective effect or not.
    A
Bora-Care should only be applied to raw that has not been painted, stained, sealed or varnished. It must also be diluted for any application with warm or hot water. It will crystallize on the surface and not penetrate otherwise. We do carry a product called Jecta that can be injected into treated wood.

    Q
Can I use BoraCare for active infestation of termites?
I found a house that I purchased apparently had been treated for termites for years (not disclosed). Last year, I gutted my garage of all drywall and sprayed 3 gallons in the garage and in the attic directly above the garage. As I sprayed, I scraped all termite tunnels that I found (big garage, I might have missed a few). I have now found a few termite tunnels on the walls, tho these might have been missed in my initial spraying. I thought BoraCare would take care of existing infestations? If not, can I now spray termidor in the garage?
    A

Boracare takes care of any active infestation of wood-destroying insects such as termites, carpenter ants, powderpost beetles, etc. It is possible for the wood to become infested again if it has been exposed to water, if the wood wasn't treated in any way, like if it wasn't stained, after the Boracare treatment dried or if not all exposed sides were treated.

Although, from the information you provided regarding the termite tunnels, if you're talking about mud tunnels then you are dealing with Subterranean termites. Boracare will still affect them if the eat the wood but the method of treatment to get rid of the colony will be to do a trench treatment around the Perimeter of your home with Termidor. Termidor can't be used indoors unless it's sprayed/foamed inside an enclosed wall void.

If you are sure, however, that you are dealing with Drywood termites, we recommend that you call Nisus (800) 264-0870 to troubleshoot with them as they are the makers of Boracare.

    Q
Can an insecticide for controlling adult powder post beetles be applied at the same time as Boracare for larva?
Treating infested black locust structural posts in a home.
    A
We would recommend using Boracare first. Once the product has dried and a sealant has been used, then an insecticide can be used. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
Question about applying BORACARE to furniture, what to do after
The right section of our game cabinet is infected with drywood termites. We had this removed (its now in the garage) and we are thinking about treating it with Boracare and then re-installing it. Was wondering what the recommendation would be so as to have the cabinet look good after application. For example, if the product leaves a sticky residue, what should be done before re-installing? (sorry if the question is very basic) And curious if the color of the wood can change after application?
    A
If more than one application Boracare is applied it can leave a crystal white type residue. Please allow 72 hours for it to dry. If you need to you can paint or sand over the furniture after the Boracare has soaked in. It should not leave a sticky residue.

    Q
Will Bora care work for an active infestation?
I pulled a small section off of a mud tube in my house and I can see termites moving in it. Is bora care a good product to use to get the termites to take something back to the colony and kill them all or should I use something else?
    A
First, it sounds like you may have Subterranean termites. You would do a completely different treatment for them, please see Barrier treatment. Boracare will work well to protect the wood itself. You can apply it for an active wood boring insect problem at a 1:1 ratio.

    Q
Boracare - efficacy on wood stored outside but out of rain
In several answers, it is stated that Boracare "evaporates" from treated wood that is outside but not sealed. That doesn't make sense to me because Boracare is a borate salt that penetrates the wood. If the wood is stored outside, but under a roof that keeps it dry, a single treatment should last indefinitely, it would seem to me. If the wood is exposed to rain, I'd expect the salt would eventually leach out. Is my understanding correct? I have maple slabs, some of which still have bark that I'd like to preserve. The maple had powder post beetles. A first application of Boracare seems to have decimated all the beetles save for one site which I will hit again, but I wonder. Is the Boracare penetrating completely through the bark into the underlying layers of wood?
    A
Boracare does penetrate through the wood. If the raw wood is not directly being rained on, it will last for the life of the wood. That is the reason why it is important to use a sealant on the wood if it will can potentially be rained on. It does not require that a sealant be used though.

    Q
    Powder Post Beetle Active Infestation
I'm reasonable sure that the infestation is powder post beetles and have sent two beetles to an entomologist for identification. In the mean time, what should I do to control them? I have suspend, bifen and taurus on hand. Could I inject any of these into the holes, let it dry, plug the holes, and then apply a light localized spray? I bought and installed the #2 grade 3/4 unfinished walnut plank (or strip) flooring from a salvage store about three years ago. The flooring was labeled and I was able to identify the NW Pacific manufacturer, which has since gone out of business. My house is on a slab, but has 2x10 floor joists. The subfloor is 3/4 plywood. Roof tar paper was used between the subfloor and the hardwood. The floor was sanded, stained, and top coated with 3 layers. The infestation is limited to lighter colored boards (sapwood?) and maybe a few exit holes in the darker (heartwood?) boards. There is currently fras around exit holes in three boards, and 2 to 3 fras covered holes each day. I might have seen fras the previous spring, but didn't think anything about it because I was installing tile during that time. One board has a few dozen exit holes, while the other boards have only a handful.
    A
Boracare is the best treatment option for any type of wood destroying insect including powder post beetles. However, no matter how new or old the wood is Boracare can only be used on wood in its raw natural state. If the wood has any type of stain or finish on them you would need to either sand it off and apply Boracare and re-stain it, or drill holes periodically through the areas where you have activity and inject Boracare into the center of the wood. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
I have noticed saw dust on my wood fence and assume it is carpenter ants. What do you recommend to treat them?
    A
Assuming that you are treating carpenter ants, you can apply Bora-Care to any areas that have an active infestation of powder post beetles, termites or carpenter ants. It will need to be treated at the rate of 1:1 and all other areas where there is no activity can be used 5:1. Once the Boracare has been applied to the fence, you will need to seal/stain/paint it to keep the rain from slowly washing it away over the years. If sealed, the Boracare will last for the life of the wood after application. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
