  • Asked by Tim from Pittsburgh, Pa

    Q
Can Deer Scram keep the yard clear?
Deer have taken to hanging out in a yard and deficating everywhere. I'd like to protect almost an acre. Can I sprinkle it all over the yard to keep them out? How would you cover an expansive area as opposed to a controlled area like a flower bed?
    A

A repellent such as Deer Scram Repellent is best applied in a band around areas that you want to protect from the target animal. If you are trying to protect a large area, then you would be applying the 18 to 24 inch band around the edge of the property as directed on the product label. Typically deer repellents are used around beds of plants that the deer would be likely to eat. Keep in mind that repellents may work better at some times than others.

For a large area, you may want to consider a more permanent means of exclusions, such as Tenax Fencing.

    Q
What is the difference between Deer Scram and Deer Scram Professional?
    A
There is a slight formulation difference between the Pro and regular deer scram per the manufacturer. Deer Scram Professional will provide 30 days of protection under normal irrigation and rainfall conditions, and up to 90 days in the winter even working under fresh snow.  The manufacturer also only guarantees the Pro version.

While the regular Deer Scram comes in smaller buckets and comes with a pail and does not last as long. You also need to apply the professional via a spreader while the regular comes with a pail to apply.

    Q
    Deer Scram directly on plants?
2 questions: (1) My husband wants to put deer scram directly onto flowering plants and I’m concerned it will harm the plants…but this seems like the only way this herd of deer will not eat them. When I say herd I’m talking like 2 dozen. He does a perimeter as well. I think the deer scram scorches the plant leaves over time…is that possible? I couldn’t find any information regarding a direct-to-plant application. (2) We also have a sprinkler system that waters these plants every morning. Do we have to reapply deer scram every day?
    A

Deer Scram Professional should be fine to apply to any & all ornamentals. There is nothing in the product that would damage flowering plants. Regarding your second question the product states, Deer Scram Professional will provide 30 days of protection under normal irrigation and rainfall conditions, and up to 90 days in the winter even working under fresh snow. But you may need to reapply after heavier than normal rains
