    Q
How long do phorid flies live?
I purchased the DF 5000 to clear my drains and get rid of phorid flies. After using for a 5-7 days as directed, when can I expect to see the flies completely gone? In other words, how long do these annoying pests live?
    A
The Phorid is a reproduction champion with females capable of laying forty eggs in twelve hours. Their entire live cycle is only about 25 days, so you can see how a population goes from zero to zillions in a very short time. How long it takes for the DF 5000 to get rid of the drain flies depends on how much organic matter has built up in the drain and if the DF 5000 is even getting in the right spot.  Sometimes flies can be breeding much farther down the drain than just in the trap under the sink.  Most of the time though the trap under the sink or tub is the issue and you just need to continue applying the gel.  It can take a few days or up to two weeks sometimes depending on how much matter has built up.  When this process is over you should treat the drains once every 30 days and you will prevent this from happening in the future.

    Q
How do drain flies get past the P trap? How much DF5000 does it take to get past the P trap and into the line?
    A
The drain flies are not coming up from the P-trap. They are traveling inside from outdoors and reproducing in the organic matter that builds up on the walls inside the drain. You should use 4oz of DF5000 drain fly gel in each drain in the infested room every night for a week. We also have a drain fly kit that comes with DF5000, glue boards to monitor the infestation and an aerosol to knock down the flying adult drain flies.

    DF 5000 vs. Invade Biodrain?
I have drain flies and want to get rid of them. Both products seem to do the same thing. Is one stronger than the other? Is the Biodrain more environmentally friendly?
    A
DF 5000 Drain Fly Gel and Invade Bio Drain are pretty much the same and will do the same job for you. The main difference is that they are made by different manufacturers. Both products are very environmentally friendly.

    Q
What is the best combination of products to use for Phorid Flies?
I was thinking DF 5000 Drain Fly Gel and/or InVade Bio Drain Gel as well as Gentrol Aerosol. What is the difference between the DF & InVade?
    A
If the Phorid flies are breeding in drains that have a buildup of organic matter and DF5000 is used it can help get rid of those pests. Adding Gentrol to the treatment program can definitely help break the cycle of infestation. DF5000 and Invade are very similar and will do the same thing for you, they are just made by different manufacturers. You can also use insect glue traps to capture the breeding adults which will help you monitor the infestation and help eliminate them from the breeding pool.

    Q
Can the DF 5000 be used to kill phorid and fruit flies?
    A

DF5000 is not an insecticide and does not kill flies of any species. DF5000 is an enzyme product that breaks down organic matter that flies breed in. If the Phorid flies and Fruit flies are breeding in drains that have a buildup of organic matter, DF5000 is used it can help get rid of those pests.

If the flies are not coming from your drain then we do carry Natural Catch Plus Fruit Fly Traps that will attract and trap adult fruit flies flying around the room.  We also carry a product called Clean Air Purge which is an aerosol you can spray in the center of the room and it will knock down any adults flying around.

    Q
How long does one bottle of DF 5000 Drain Fly Gel last?
how long does one bottle last for one drain when using as directed?
    A
If you use the product exactly as directed and you do not have a very heavy buildup in your drains the bottle should last 3 months. (heavy build could cause you to have to treat for 10 days vs 5 days for the initial treatment)

    Q
Must drain flies be treated at night ?
I retire to bed much earlier than the night owls I live with, so it's difficult to treat at night and expect no one to run water. Would treating in the morning after all night owls have left for school or work be as effective?
    A
We really like to Drain gel to be able to do its magic for at least 7-8 hours. if you could manage a time like that, that the drains will not be used that will work too. Be sure to flush the drains with hot water after the product has sat in the drains.

    Q
Will DF 5000 Drain Gel eliminate hair build up in the drain?
With teenage girls, even with a hair trap in the shower, I get slow drains in the shower every few months. And with the slow drains comes the flies. Ugh! I'm looking for something that will dissolve the hair. Will this work?
    A

The DF 5000 will break up organic matter in the drain disrupting the breeding site for drain flies, but it will not remove clogs. We recommend that you also snake for hair removal in the drains.

    Q
Will DF 5000 control sewer flies in the septic system?
    A
We would recommend using a drain cleaner, such as DF 5000 Drain Gel. This will kill the food source of the drain flies/sewer flies. You will use 4 oz. to each drain once daily for one week.

    Q
Can I use DF 5000 drain gel in toilet? Or can you recommend something?
    A
You will usually see drain flies developing in a toilet only if the toilet is not used very often. DF 5000 probably won't be the best product to use in your situation if drain flies are coming from the toilet. You can turn the water off to the toilet and flush it so that the bowl and the tank are empty. Thoroughly scrub both, paying special attention to the area under the lip of the bowl and the tank. Scrubbing and cleaning these areas will help eliminate the decaying organic matter that these flies need to breed and develop in. While the toilet is drained you can apply Invade Hot Shot Foam to the tank and the bowl and let it sit overnight to clean all of the cracks and crevices that you may not be able to clean properly. Invade Hot Shot would be a good choice because it will expand to cover all of the surfaces you need to treat. This may need to be repeated a few times before you get rid of all of the gunk that can build up over time. All drains in the infested room should be treated with either Invade Hot Shot or with DF 5000.

    Q
I've been having problem with drain flies for months now
Ive been treating the drain flies with gentrol and drain gel for months now but they don't disappear in our sump drain in our basement, My husband and I are so frustrated now , please help!
    A
DF 5000 is a very good drain cleaner. Note that is does not have any insecticide in it. It is strictly used to clean bacteria in drains. You will coat the drain walls and do the same with the Gentrol IGR. You will coat these areas thoroughly as fly larvae develop in the scum buildup on the sides of drain pipes. You will repeat this every 2-4 weeks depending on the severity of the issue.

    Q
Will DF 5000 kill larvae in a shower pan by putting around the floor of the shower seams?
After a shower, larvae comes up through cracks in my tile around the wall of my shower. I have had it regrouted, but these still come up. Can I pour it around these cracks and will it kill the larvae in the drain pan. I have had this problem for about 4 months. No flies, just the larvae. Had exterminator check to see what this larva is.
    A
DF5000 will not kill any insects or larvae. DF5000 just helps to get rid of the organic matter that the larvae eat and that flies breed in. Until you get a positive ID on the larvae we are not sure what to recommend for you to use.

    Q
Drain Flies: 40 ft long lanai drain
Any suggestions on how to use DF5000 on a drain that runs the length of our entire lanai (~40 feet)? And the covers do not come off, so we can't clean any traps (if there even are traps on lanai drains) that may be underneath. We've tried pressure washing into the drains, digging a bigger trench where it drains outside (to eliminate standing water); using a different (but obviously less strong enzyme), using gel bleach, using vinegar & baking soda. We still have the flies, and tonite after using the vinegar/baking soda again, hundreds of larvae came up out of the drains... yuck!
    A
We have never really had this question and we are not exactly sure.  But our best suggestion would be to foam the drains with invade bio foam.  It is a microbial foam, like DF 5000 but in a foam, and is great at getting in all nooks and crannies where drain flies breed.  This would be our best recommendation.

    Q
Is the DF5000 safe for the plumbing pipes? They won't cause any erosion over time will they?
    A
The DF5000 Drain Gel is not corrosive to plumbing pipes whatsoever.  The drain fly treatment products are actually a bacterial formulation that are only effective on organic matter built up in a drain and will not eat through metal, polyurethane or any other type of plumbing pipe.

Yes, you can use the DF5000 along with the Gentrol Aerosol IGR. You would want to coat the outside of the drain at a 360 degree angle, and use the aerosol straight down the middle of the drain. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
