    Q
How do you get rid of drain flies?
    A
Drain flies breed and lay eggs in areas where there is decaying organic matter such as bathroom drains. To start the process of getting rid of this pest, you must thoroughly clean the drain where the worms have been spotted. Next, you should apply a product called Invade Bio Drain. The Invade Bio Drain gel will coat the inside of the pipe and will help breakdown built up organic matter. This process must be repeated every night for 5-7 days. In pipes where there is a lot of built up organic matter, a second week long treatment may be needed. If you have spotted adult drain flies in your home, you can spray a product called On-Time Metered Aerosol  to help eliminate these breeding adults. You should place glue boards over each drain in the bathroom to capture any flying adults entering or leaving the drains. Using glue boards also helps monitor the level of infestation. We have all of these products combined into a Drain Fly Kit for your convenience.

    Q
What chemicals can we use to repel and eradicate leeches?
Lots of small leeches coming out of my bath room drain.
    A

Have you had these pests actually identified as leeches? Are you seeing small moths or flies in your bathroom? Usually, small worms coming out of the drain indicates drain flies. We recommend that you take a few moments to google 'drain fly larvae' and see if the pictures correspond with what you are seeing in your drain. If the pictures do correspond with what you are seeing, there a few things you should do. Drain flies breed and lay eggs in areas where there is decaying organic matter such as bathroom drains. To start the process of getting rid of this pest you must thoroughly clean the drain where the worms have been spotted. Next you should apply a product called DF 5000. The DF 5000 drain fly gel will coat the inside of the pipe and will help breakdown built up organic matter. This process must be repeated every night for 5-7 days. In pipes where there is a lot of built up (organic matter), a second week long treatment may be needed. If you have spotted adult drain flies in your home, you can spray a product called Clean Air Purge III to help eliminate these breeding adults. You should place glue boards over each drain in the bathroom to capture any flying adults entering or leaving the drains. Using glue boards also helps monitor the level of infestation. We have all of these products combined into a Drain Fly Kit for your convenience.

If these pictures do not look like what you are seeing you must have the insect identified so the appropriate treatment can be recommended. You should contact your local Cooperative Extension Office and ask to speak to the entomologist on staff. The entomologist will tell you how to properly collect a sample for identification purposes or he/she may request a picture.

    Q
I am wondering how to attack my drain fly problem first.
I have drain flies in the kitchen (where I first saw them 3 years ago), and now have them in both bathrooms. I wonder if they are behind the kitchen cabinets, too(?). We had a flood in the kitchen area 4 years ago. Not sure if that's related. Could they spreading to the other drains? We also have a floor drain (our kitchen is on the walk-out basement level) and wonder if I should treat that, too.
    A
All drains in an infested room must be treated. Drain flies can definitely spread from one room to another and drain flies can breed anywhere there is a buildup of moist decaying organic matter as that is all they need to breed. We recommend that you check out our Drain Fly Kit which comes with all of the products we would recommend to treat a drain fly infestation plus it comes with a step by step instruction guide to help you through the process. You can also watch the instructional video on the Drain Fly Kit page on our website (scroll towards the bottom of the page to read our instructional guide). If after following the inspection instructions on our drain fly page you find that the flies are not developing in the drains you may need to find a way to get behind the cabinets and thoroughly clean the area you suspect is infested.

    Q
Can Drain Fly Kit be used in a toilet bowl?
I came home from a 10 day vacation only to find drain fly larvae (about 20-60) in the toilet bowl of an upstairs bathroom that is seldom used. I did notice a small fly in the hall by this bathroom before going on vacation, but didn't think anything about it. Of course, I was very concerned when I saw the surprise waiting for me upon my return. Following my first instinct I took a picture of it & then flushed the toilet. I also flushed bleach down the toilet. I haven't seen any more flies, but I don't want to take any chances. Could they be coming up from the toilet drain or did they just lay their larvae in the toilet bowl (due to the stagnant water)? Prior to this event, I hadn't noticed any flies in other areas of the house. I want to put an end to this before it gets out of control. Please advise!!!
    A
You can use DF5000 in the toilet bowl and in the toilet tank. Most likely the flies were introduced from outside and did not come up through the drains. Be sure to scrub the toilet and then add the drain gel. Let sit over night and flush. Repeat as necessary.

    Q
    Gnats
We just bought a newly built home in March. After about 2 weeks we notice gnats in the bathrooms. (Both are on the same side of the house). We have been working with a company to no avail. No one can determine where they are coming from. They have sprayed inside and outside. For a few days we will see a lot of dead bugs, but then they are flying around again. While they were building the house it rained the majority of time.
    A
Based on your description it sounds like drain flies. If you contact your local Extension Office and speak with the Entomologist on duty, they would be able to help positively I.D. this pest. If indeed they are drain flies, you want to first look around and check there are no water leaks. Please check out our article "Get Rid Of Drain Flies". You also want to use a Drain Gel that contains active enzymes that will eat away the organic materials allowing the drain flies to continue to thrive.

    Q
My drains have been cleaned. The drain flies come out of every drain in the house.
Can the drain flies come in from the Septic Tank?
    A
Unless there is a crack in your drain pipes that lead to your septic tank, the drain flies will not come from that area. Use glue boards over the drains like shown in our drain fly video to make sure they are actually breeding in the drains, not just occasionally going down into them and then coming back out. You will want to treat with a drain gel that will eat away at any build up on the sides of the pipes that the flies can be leaving eggs/larvae behind in. Keep in mind, any area that holds moisture can be used as a breeding ground. Areas like inside toilet tanks, around seals of cauking on sinks and tubs, windows in bathrooms and kitchens, loose tiles that could be holding water underneath, and around kitchen sink hose sprayers, should all be cleaned and checked. You can check out our Drain Fly Kit and article on How To Get Rid Of Drain Flies for the best treatment methods. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

    Q
How do we get rid of drain flies?
I work in a dialysis unit and alot of organic wastes go down the drains and from time to time we get infestions of drain flies will your product work to kill the adults and could you recommend a preventive treatment for the drains
    A

Getting rid of drain flies is usually a two step process. Step 1 is getting rid of the debris in the drains that are allowing the drain flies to breed and step 2 actually eliminating the adult drain flies. It can take several weeks to get rid of drain flies and the length of the treatment will depend on the level of debris built up in the drain, the number of drains infested and level of infestation before the treatment is started. The first step of a drain fly treatment is to start getting rid of the built up gunk in the drains where the drain flies are breeding. It is recommended that you use a drain gel or drain foam to clean and break down this organic matter. Drain cleaner gels and foams are concentrated biological products specifically designed to breakdown organic matter built-up in sinks, drains and garbage disposals and other areas where drain flies harbor and reproduce. Drain Gel or foam should be applied to the infested drains when they will not be in use for several hours, usually at night. Most Drain Gel products recommend that the product be applied to all infested drains every night for at least 5 nights. Drain Gel can be applied one time per week to maintain the cleanliness of drains in areas where drain fly infestations have been an issue in the past. After you have started to treat the drains with drain gel, it is time to get rid of the adult drain flies. You can do this with a pyrethrin space spray. Space spray refers to spraying an aerosol product directly into the air instead of directing the product onto a surface. Usually only pyrethrin aerosols are labeled for this use. A space spray is a good choice if you have a lot of drain flies inside and you need to get rid of the drain flies quickly. With this method, you will eliminate any drain flies that are out during the application but you will not leave behind an active residual. Following the product label instructions, apply the aerosol as a space spray. Most space sprays require you to vacate the room after the application and ventilate before re-entry. Please refer to the product label for re-entry requirements.

    Q
    Drain flies disappeared
I bought a "kit" about 3 weeks ago. Once it arrived, i didnt open it because the flies have not shown up for about the same 3 weeks. Are they gone or should i still do the treatment? Also it's been cold lately in OH, would that effect their activity?
    A
It is possible that the drain they were breeding in cleared of the organic matter the needed to survive. Only time will tell if they are gone for good. If the drain/pipe hasn't been cleaned in a long time it is still worth your while to go ahead and clean the drain with the drain gel to avoid this problem in the future.

Is the Drain Fly Kit the best product for gnats? Is it safe to spray into the drain?
I just began to see gnats this week for the first time, i don`t know where they are coming from, could it be the sink drain, or where else would they come from? I first saw them in my bathroom and the next day in my kitchen. I`ve ordered from you in the past, I live in a condo and when a new owner moved in, they brought their roaches with them, but your products took care of that. I would never by these products anywhere else but DMOPC. you guys are great!

    Q
I have what looks like to be moth/drain flies in one of my bedrooms. None in the bathroom or kitchen. Help!
    A

You should verify first if they are drain flies or moths - treatment for these two insects would vary.

Drain flies breed and lay eggs in areas where there is decaying organic matter which is usually bathroom or other drains. Really, they cannpot survive without some source of oisture or standing water. Locating and eliminating this source will be the key to eradicating your problem.

If you have spotted adult drain flies in your home you can spray a product called Clean Air Purge III to help eliminate these breeding adults. You should place glue boards over each drain in the bathroom to capture any flying adults entering or leaving the drains. Using glue boards also helps monitor the level of infestation. We have all of these products combined into a Drain Fly Kit for your convenience.

This past summer I had the problem of drain flies coming from RV holding tank of black water. Are these products safe for this type of plumbing?

Yes, Invade Bio Drain can be used inside toilets in an RV.

A better option may be to use the Invade Hotspot because it foams and will coat the drain better.

    Q
Do I need to use a foaming agent with drain gel in my sump pump area?
I have a drain fly infestion and flies have been coming out of my sump pump opening. I have used a gel cleaner by pouring it into the sump pump but do I need a foaming agent with it? Would it be more effective that way? And can I use the aerosol spray directly in the sump pump?
    A

Typically for sump pumps and pits it is good to use a foaming product which would be our Invade Hot Spot or something like Invade Bio Foam in a poly foamer.  Foam gets into the pump and cracks and crevices where the gel in our Drain Fly Kit is really only meant for drains in your kitchen or bathrooms.  You cannot add a foaming agent to it to make it foam.

How do drain flies get past the traps in showers and sinks?
Can they swim, hold breath etc? Mine seem to be coming from shower drain which has no shut off and come out every 2 weeks but how do they come thru the water. My wife thinks these are termites.
    A

Drain Flies need moisture to survive so you might notice the larva "swimming". Adults find drains a great place for their breeding areas. It is important to have a pest id to confirm you are dealing with the correct pest for treatment. Can you tell us what traps you are currently using so that we can provide you with more details. Thank you! You are welcome to submit a clear picture to [email protected] to determine the insect also.
