Baiting
Place baits in main runways: To locate main runways, probe 12 to 18 inches from the surface mound on the side which is flattened or depressed, using a burrow probe or a smooth metal rod. When resistance on probe suddenly decreases, probe is in the main runway. Open the runway with the probe, a spade, or a shovel. Place one bait block into each opening of the runway and cover the opening to exclude light. Do not use loose soil to cover bait.
Place bait at two or three locations in each main burrow (runway) system. A pocket gopher will travel to all portions of the burrow system within a few days. Some gophers may die above ground, so check the area 10 to 15 days after the treatment. Bury or incinerate (if permitted locally) any dead animals found. If gopher still exists after two weeks, bait the burrows again.

I've used Answer gopher bait before and it is extremely effective. Takes about 10 days to stop all pocket gopher activity. Bought an extra box just in case they come back this summer. After the gophers dug about 7 holes in my yard, I searched for a "Killer"! Every morning there was a new pile of dirt. Answer has done it. They made a couple more appearances, but you know, the cousins, et al! I am pleased and will continue to use it this coming spring. I have a little hand auger, & cover the hole with a rock for a couple of days. So easy to use Answer! Thanks DoMyOwn!

JT Eaton Answer Gopher Bait is pet safe if used as directed on the product label. The risk of secondary poisoning is very minimal. Generally, a gopher would only need to consume a small amount of bait in order to receive a lethal dose, so even if a cat were to eat a dead gopher it is unlikely that the cat would be able to consume enough bait to have a harmful effect. In most cases, well-fed domesticated animals will not actually eat a dead animal such as a gopher that they come across. Instead they will play with it or chew it and then leave it behind.

I was at the cemetery where my parents are buried and there are LOTS of gopher holes and the gophers were so brave they came out of their holes. This is in central Canada.

My well is at 70 ft deep.
According to JT Eaton Answer Gopher Bait's label, "Do not apply directly to water. Runoff also may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in water adjacent to treated areas. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment wash water or rinsate." The product will not leach into the soil or into the well water unless it falls directly into the well. We would recommend to take precautions such as not using the bait within 20 feet of the well, or avoiding use if an active tunnel heads directly towards the well.
