    Q
Can I apply Milky Spore on Soil with no grass
I just cleared out my backyard and have no grass. Can I apply Milky spore on top of soil with no grass. I have lots of moles who are feeding on grubs and other underground insects and want to use Milky Spore to eliminate them.
    A
Milky Spore can be applied to areas with no grass but please be aware that this is a long term project and will take years to fully protect the area.   Also Milky Spore will only harm Japanese Beetle Grubs and will have no effort on any other insects.

    Q
What is the setting on a Scott's speedy green 3000 for milky spore?
    A
Milky Spore Spreader Mix is too light to be used with a broadcast/rotary spreader. It must be placed in concentrated areas on the lawn and that is why it must be used with a drop spreader over every square foot of grass.  It requires six applications usually Spring and Fall for three years to build the number of spores in any one area to millions of spores.

    Q
If I started using the Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix last fall, is ok to put down Grub Killer before I apply Milky Spore mix this spring?
    A

If you kill off the grubs by using a different product before they have a chance to consume the Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix, the product will not be able to multiply in the gut of the grub and spread through your lawn. If you used a grub killer, then you would be limiting the effects of using milky spore.

What is your recommendation for a liquid/granular (water soluble) insecticide for lawn grub worm control?
Tank sprayer application behind tractor; 1.5 acre residential.
    A
Milky spore would be a great product for you! Milky Spore should be applied three times a year for two consecutive years in a row. The best time should be in the spring (May), summer (July) and fall (September). It would be too late in the year to apply this product now. We would recommend waiting until the Spring to apply.

    Q
What is the setting for Scotts rotary spreader when using Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix?
    A

The manufacturer of Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix strongly suggests applying this product with a drop spreader. It must be placed in concentrated areas on the lawn and a drop spreader will cover every square foot of grass. If you use a rotary spreader you need to go very slowly.  If you go too fast, the granules may cloud up and the spores will blow away and not penetrate the soil. We are not sure what the setting would be for that particular Scotts spreader.  We would suggest contacting Scotts at 1-888-270-3714

  • Asked by Becky from Texas

    Q
Why is the Milky Spore not dissolving on the ground when I water it in?
I had applied Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix twice before and watered it in and the material seemed to dissolve away into the soil. My third and most recent application I watered it in and the white granules are still all over my lawn and will not break down. Does this mean its defective or not working? Do I need to water it more?
    A

Per the manufacturer, the white granules you are seeing are just the clay carrier used to distribute the Milky Spore on the ground. The spores are not wrapped in the clay carrier, just mixed in with it, so the spores are still being distributed on the lawn and will control the grubs.  Sometimes the type of clay carrier they use for a particular batch may not break down with watering but this should not affect the actual spores in any way as long as the application instructions on the product label were followed.

    Q
Can Mlky Spore Granules be spread on wet grass?
    A

If the ground is wet, this will help to carry the milky spore into the soil. It is ok to apply the Milky Spore Granules now that the grass is wet. You want to apply 3 times a year for 2 years. One app memorial day one app 4th of July and last app by Labor day. Once you have done this 2 years in a row, you should be rid of grubs.

    Q
Should I use Milky Spore for lawn grubs?
    A

Milky spore is a common grub treatment, but it will only affect Japanese beetle white grubs. This is why it is important to identify the grub before deciding to treat. Milky spore comes in two formulations, granules and powder. The granules must be applied multiple times over two years using a spreader. The powder only has to be applied one time using a specially designed applicator. It does take about 2 years to see the initial results but the spore keeps working to control grubs for at least 10 years.  Here is our white grub guide for more information.

    Q
Will milky spore control June Bug white grubs here in South Florida
From what I have been told at nurseries we do not have Japanese beetles here in South Florida and the white grubs I am finding in my garden are June Beetle white grubs. Will milky spore control these also?
    A

The Milky Spore only affects Japanese Beetle Grubs. A better option for you would be to treat in the beginning of May and in June with a product like Merit to control the grubs during the most activity of them in the soil to get the best results. Fall treatments even in warm climates like Florida will not see full control, typically, as they are feeding less on the lawn and will not consume as much of the Merit to be affected by it. The other option if you want something for what activity you are experiencing now, the only product that will really work to drop the grub population is Dylox. It only lasts in the soil about 24-48 hours but its designed to knock back the numbers in large amounts in that time frame.
