    Q
With milky spore, it takes 3 to 5 years. Should I use another product in addition to get faster results?
    A
No. Do not use any other products for grub control when using milky spore. It does take up to 2 years to see the full effect of the product but it will start working on the grubs right away. When you apply Milky Spore the existing grubs must eat the spores and digest them which in turn will multiply and spread the spores. If you kill off the existing grubs the spore will not have a way to multiply.

    Q
My lawn is now just dirt and dead grass; does it matter when I apply Milky Spores? Should I still apply it?
I plan on reseeding in the Fall because there is no grass there now is it worth putting Milky Spore down (I am assuming no new eggs will be laid on just dirt.)
    A
Milky Spore can be applied any time the ground is not frozen. That being said, the spore can only reproduce and spread when grubs eat it. If there are no grubs at the time of application the Milky Spore will not be able to reproduce and move through the property.

    Q
What would be the best way to apply Milky Spore Powder, and what amount do I need?
My yard is 80'x500', or 40,000 sf. I have an infestation of Japanese Beetles. What is a checkerboard pattern? When to apply?
    A

You will need 4 of the 40 oz boxes of the Milky Spore Powder for a 40,000 sq ft area. You should use the Milky Spore Lawn and Garden Dispenser for the correct application method. You will apply one shake of the dispenser in spots every four feet in rows four feet apart. This is considered a checkerboard pattern.

  • Asked by Tom from Hyannis, Massachusetts
    03/24/2013
    Q
For Milky Spore, is it one application of the powder or 6 applications over 3 years of the granular?
What is the accurate info? If so, why would anyone do a 3 year program?
    A

Milky Spore Powder  is a one time application put down in spots in measuring teaspoon amounts every four feet apart creating a checkerboard pattern of spots throughout your yard. Each spot contains 100 million spores.

    Milky Spore Spreader Mix
in bags is applied with a drop spreader over every square foot of grass and requires six applications usually Spring and Fall for three years to build the number of spores in any one area to millions of spores.

Some folks find the spreader mix easier to apply because the application is done with a spreader so that is the method they choose. It is simply a personal decision based upon what you feel comfortable doing.

    Q
Can I apply Milky Spore Powder now or wait?
    A

For Milky Spore Powder to work, live grubs have to ingest it. For long term treatments, we would recommend using Milky Spore Powder. This is a slower acting product, but it will last about 15-20 years in the soil after one application. It is a one time application put down in spots in measuring teaspoon amounts every four feet apart creating a checkerboard pattern of spots throughout your yard. Each spot contains 100 million spores. Right now the grubs are not actively feeding and going deeper into the soil.

    Q
Is Milky Spore okay if I have already used GrubEx and DE powder?
I have used the organic DE(for short) powder to control ants, etc. and have applied GrubEx also. I still have grubs, so I'm looking at Milky Spore, but see it should not be used with other products. Thoughts? I also want to make sure it will not harm my earth worms. Thank you.
    A
Milky Spore can be used when other insecticides have been used but if you kill off the grubs before you use the Milky Spore than the spore will not have a way to multiply to kill off future grubs. Milky Spore will not harm earthworms.

  • Asked by Kristin from North Syracuse

    Q
What is the Milky Spore application schedule?
I've purchased Milky Spore and done the first application for the season this past May. I live in Central NY, and I believe the Japanese beetles will emerge in a couple more weeks. So when should I apply the "summer" application of Milky Spore to my lawn? Does it make sense to do that after the grubs have become beetles? Thank you.
    A

Milky Spore Powder can be applied at any time the ground is not frozen, the powder only needs to be applied once and takes up to 2 years for you to see results. The spore will reproduce and spread when grubs eat it. If you're using Milky Spore Lawn Spreader Mix, you will need to do one treatment in the Spring, one in the Summer and one in the fall this year and next year, the effect will be the same. The product will only work on grubs that are actively feeding and not on the actual Japanese Beetles.

  • Asked by Kevin from Bulverde, Tx

    Q
Do I need to reapply Milky Spore Powder after heavy rainfall?
About a week after I applied Milky Spore powder last year we had very heavy rain and flooding. I'm not sure if the product was on the ground long enough to have not been affected by the rains. Should I assume that I need to reapply?
    A

Milky Spore Powder does need to be watered into the soil with rainfall or irrigation after application, so rainfall actually helps the Milky Spore to reach the grubs in the soil. If you has so much rain and flooding that the soil was physically removed from the area and needed to be replaced, then we would recommend reapplying in those areas.

  • Asked by Mike from Wells
    10/03/2016
    Q
How many applications of Milky Spore Powder do you need per year?
    A

Milky Spore Powder only needs to be applied once. It begins working as soon as it is applied as long as grubs are feeding. Once grubs are infected they will multiply the spore by several billion times and spread it further. In warm climates, good control can occur in one to three years. In colder areas like New England, it will take up to three to five years. Once established in a lawn, Milky Spore has been known to last 15 to 20 years.

    Q
Why can Milky Spore only be sold to certain states?
I know they have restrictions, Why this product.
    A

Milky Spore is not for sale to all states because these states do not have Japanese Beetles, the only insect this product will work for. White grubs can be other insects as well and other products are needed. Please refer to our White Grub page for the complete product listings and further information to help identify your pest.

  • Asked by Scott from Maryland

    Q
Can I also use Merit or Dylox with this?
I have a new lawn only two years old, but already see the grubs and the beetles. I need the best solution, please advise.
    A

No, Milky Spore Powder and products such as Dylox 6.2 Granules and Merit Granules should not be used together. They will counteract each other.

For Milky Spore Powder to work, live grubs have to ingest it and Dylox 6.2 Granules and Merit Granules will kill them. For long term treatments, we would recommend using Milky Spore Powder. This is a slower acting product, but it will last about 15-20 years in the soil after one application.

With Merit Granules, it is most effective when applied prior to, or just after, egg lay. In most cases, adult emergence occurs in early summer, often after significant rainfall or irrigation, followed by mating and egg laying. This usually continues for four to six weeks. Under normal circumstances, Merit will provide residual white grub control for four months or longer in turf.

Dylox 6.2 Granules is only active and kills for 48 hours. Dylox should be watered in for at least 1 to 1.5 hours for best results to ensure the product makes it through the thatch layer to where the grubs are feeding.  Mature grubs usually require at least 2 applications, 3 to 4 days apart.
