    Q
How much water is needed to mix with the recommended 1.0 to 1.25 fl oz of Monterey Spurge Power to treat for wild violets? The 2 to 5 gallons of water suggested is a broad range. I am using a 5 gallon backpack sprayer.
    A

When treating warm season lawn that is completely dormant, the higher rates may be used. When treating warm season lawn that is actively growing, use a lower rate. Avoid applications to warm season lawn during transition from dormancy to green-up or green-up to dormancy.

Apply Monterey Spurge Power at the rate of 1.0 to 1.25 fl. oz. in 2 gallons to 5 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. to control weeds growing in lawn planted to Bluegrass, Fescue, Rye, Bent (excluding golf greens and tees), Bahia, Bermuda, and Zoysia. The actual amount of water you use does not matter, as water is only the carrier. To simplify this, you can use 1.0-1.25 fl oz of Sporge Power in 5 gallons of water to cover 1,000 sq ft.

  • Asked by Debra from Mattoon, Illinois
    04/22/2021
    Q
Is it recommended to wear face coverings while spraying Monterey Spurge Power?
    A

The Monterey Spurge Power only states that the following PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required when applying it to the lawn:

    • Long-sleeved shirt and long pants;
    • Socks and shoes;
    • Chemical-resistant gloves.

Should you choose to wear a mask for extra protection against drift or blow back of the chemical in wind, you are certainly welcome to do so and a basic KN95 or painters mask is more than sufficient.

Please review the product label for more information.

  • Asked by Ben from Walled Lake Michigan

    Q
When to apply Monterey Spurge Power in Michigan?
I want to spray creeping charlie. Is it too early to spray in Michigan? I read the temps should be over 55 degrees. It's in the 60's during the day but still in the 40's at night.
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is a post-emergence herbicide that can be applied anytime creeping charlie (ground ivy) is actively growing. You can contact your Local Cooperative Extension Office for specific timing in your region.

    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill crabgrass?
    A

No, Monterey Spurge Power does not control crabgrass or other grassy weeds. Our most popular choice for crabgrass control in most turfgrasses is Drive XLR8 Herbicide with Duo Stick surfactant. We have more tips in our online Crabgrass Lawn Care Guide here.

  • Asked by Elaine from No Kingstown, R.i.

    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill Iris that it has invaded?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is used only as directed to turf lawns. Per the Monterey Spurge Power label: Avoid drift of spray mist to vegetables, flowers, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and other desirable plants.  It could injure iris if contact is made but not completely kill it.

If you are looking to get rid of wild Iris, we recommend Quali-Pro MSM Turf Herbicide on listed turfs.
The usage rates for Quali-Pro MSM Turf Herbicide will vary depending on what type(s) of weeds you are treating for, what type of grass you have, whether you will be spot treating or broadcast spraying, and how much area you need to cover.  Please refer to the product label for complete application instructions.

  • Asked by Hilarion from Miami, Florida

    Q
Can Monterey Spurge Power be used on Tiff South Florida St. Augustine turfgrass to treat creeping beggarweed that has taken over my lawn?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power can be used on Centipede and St. Augustine turfgrasses only if the established turfgrass have shown they can tolerate injury.

Per the product label, when treating Carpetgrass and St. Augustine turfgrasses, applciations should be made as a spot treatment only. Broadcast applications should be avoided when air temperatures are above 80 degrees to prevent injury to the lawn.

  • Asked by Tracy from Grants Pass Oregon

    Q
I sprayed wild violets. the violets didn't react at all! It's been 4 weeks
I did spot style spraying using a gallon of water and mixing as indicated on label. Seemed to work on a creeping Charlie-like plant. But the violets are still going strong and it has been 4 weeks since I sprayed.
    A
Monterey Spurge Power is labeled to target wild violets, and should be applied at a rate 1.0 to 1.25 fl. oz. in 2 gallons to 5 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft..  You may want to consider reapplying the product to your wild violets, keeping in mind not apply more than 1.47 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, or more than 2 applications per year (at a rate of 0.73 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft.) with a minimum retreatment interval of 21 days.

  • Asked by John from Sierra Vista Az
    09/07/2021
    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill sandbur and also prevent new seeds from germinating?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is not labeled for sandbur nor will it prevent new weeds from germination from seed.

For Warm Season lawns, a post emergent such as Image Kills Nutsedge or Celsius WG can be used when the weeds are actively growing.

For Cool Season lawns, we would recommend Acclaim Extra Herbicide along with a Non Ionic Surfactant for sandbur when it is actively growing.

We recommend using a pre-emergent for field sandbur in the fall, such as Pendulum 2G or Dimension 2EW:Granule

  • Asked by Chris from Wichita
    09/11/2021
    Q
Will Monterey Spurge Power kill toothed spurge?
The label only states spurge. There are several varieties of spurge. I'm particularly interested in if this will kill toothed spurge as a 3 way killer, such as trimec classic, won't touch it. It will kill the common spotted or prostrate spurge. Will the higher concentration of the two chemicals, that is also in trimec with a lower percentage than spurge power, kill toothed spurge?
    A

Unfortunately, there are few options for post emergent control of Toothed Spurge and even using a non selective such as glyphosate at the highest rates have shown to be ineffective. The only product we can recommend would be Dismiss South Herbicide as it lists annual spurge (toothed spurge) as well as the other two common varieties, prostrate and spotted spurge. Repeat applications may be required and full control is not guaranteed.

One of the most common ways to deal with this weed in your gardens is to mulch the infested area, which prevents light from reaching their seedlings and seeds, depriving them of food before they can make it for themselves. Applying mulch that is 3 to 4 inches deep is typically affective.

Contact your Master Gardener with the Cooperative Extension Office for recommendations shown to be effective for this weed in your region.

  • Asked by Fred from La Mesa

    Q
Should Monterey Spurge Power be used to treat spurge in my bermuda lawn as a spot spray or broadcast application over the entire lawn?
It is November and the bermuda is still green in San Diego, can this still be used and should I use it a the lower concentration rate.
    A

Monterey Spurge Power can be used as a spot spray or broadcast application to treat spurge in bermuda lawns. Per the product label, for warm season turfgrasses actively growing the lower rates are recommended. When warm season turfgrass is completely dormant, the higher rates can be used. Avoid applications to warm season lawn during transition from dormancy to green-up or green-up to dormancy

  • Asked by Cyndy from Greenwood, In
    02/19/2022
    Q
Can I apply Monterey Spurge Power at the same time or shortly after applying a spring boost using Scott's Weed and Feed?
I'd like to give our lawn a spring boost with Scott's Spring Weed and Feed in March/April. Is it safe to follow up with Spurge Power a few weeks later?
    A

Monterey Spurge Power is a post emergent that should be applied when weeds are actively growing and would not interfere with an application Scotts Weed and Feed application as long as you do not exceed the application rate per label.

For precaution, we typically suggest waiting 7 days between treatments to avoid overstressing the lawn.

  • Asked by Meredith from St. Louis, Mo
    06/04/2022
    Q
After applying Monterey Spurge Power and the weeds are dead, should we dig those up before planting in 4 weeks?
Once the wild violets and other weeds are presumably dead, so I need to dig them up? Till the soil? What do I need to do to “clean up” the area before I start planting things such as hostas and azaleas in that area? I know to wait 4 weeks after application before planting. Just curious on what to do after they're dead.
    A

Yes, it would be recommended to manually remove any dead weeds from the application of Monterey Spurge Power to allow room for new desirable plants to grow. Tilling the soil will help loosen it up and encourage proper drainage in the future.

Please review the product label for more information.
