    Q
Is Permethrin SFR 36.8% the best product to use on sand gnats in my backyard?
    A

Permethrin SFR 36.8% is not labeled for any type of biting gnat or biting midge (another name for sand gnats) and may not provide effective control. We would recommend choosing a product that is specifically labeled for gnats or midges such as Talstar P or Onslaught. Both of these products are labeled for biting gnats and midges and can be sprayed over the lawn. Flying insects are hard to control because they do not readily come into contact with the areas where you have sprayed the insecticide, so it important to spray areas where the tiny flies actually land or hang out.

    Q
Is Permethrin SFR good for Japanese beetle control?
Japanese beetle season is close. I have flowering trees and bushes that are affected by them... a flowering plum that last year was ravaged by them. Is this the spray of choice? What are the hazards? Have a dog and child but the trees and shrubs are not in their area.
    A
Permethrin SFR is a great choice for Japanese Beetle control. Be sure to use it at the highest concentration, avoiding the blooms if possible (may cause browing). Permethrin SFR may need to be applied once per month to avoid Japanese beetle damage. Pets and children need to be out of the area while the application is being done and they may return as soon as the application is dry. The Permethrin SFR product label and MSDS are available on our site for further product information.

    Q
What product would be safe to use in a barn that houses horses and cats?
We have a 3 stall barn that we use to house 2 horses and 2 barn cats. The barn has a dirt floor and is a wooden structure. We are worried about what type of pest control we should use. Can you recommend some? We have treated carpenter bees and wasps using typical products since they are above the ground level of the animals. We also have Lesser Mealworm Beetle/Yellow Mealworm in some part of the barn.
    A
We would recommend Permethrin SFR 36.8% for treatment around livestock and barns.  Permethrin SFR 36.8%, when used as directed on the product label, is safe to use directly on dogs and other animals (Do NOT apply to cats), barns and livestock areas. It is a concentrate you mix with water and apply using a hand pump sprayer.  Please reference the product label for further instructions and complete information.

    Q
I live in Michigan with a yard that backs up to the woods. I have a big problem with mosquitoes.
Any suggestions? I am currently using Permethrin SFR.
    A
Is the Permethrin SFR working well?  If so, we always recommend to stick with what works.  Once downside to Permethrin SFR is that it usually does not last very long outside, usually only a week or two.  We do have a product called Talstar, which is our most popular product for flea control and it will last for 30 days before needing to be reapplied.

We are having a problem with biting deer flies, and my son is very sensitive to their bites. He gets a huge welt and swelling. Is there also a cream with permethrin in it?
    A
No. Permethrin SFR 36.8% cannot be used on your body. We only carry products that can be used on/in your home or yard. Permethrin SFR 36.8% will help control most insects that land on areas that have been sprayed such as your bushes, or lawn.

    Q
Does Permethrin SFR kill army worms, and is it toxic to geese?
    A
Permethrin SFR is labeled for army worms and will kill just about any insect.  We do not see how Permethrin SFR could be harmful to Geese.  It is only strong enough to kill small insects.  If it is safe for use around children and pets, we are confident that it would be safe for geese and water foul.

Can Permethrin SFR 36.8% be used in a fogger?
Is this an effective product to use as a fogging compound in a propane fogger? If yes, is it ok to dilute this Permethrin product with mineral oil for use in the fogger, or is there something better to dilute it with than mineral oil? Thanks for your help!
    A
We do not recommend using Permethrin SFR in a fogger. The actual product label does have recommendations for using it in a fogger indoors, but only in very limited situations.

    Q
Will Cyfluthrin kill the sarcoptic mange mites inside and outside of the house?
I must find the source of the sarcoptic mites and kill them.
    A
There are very few products that have sarcoptic mites or scabies mites listed on their product labels. You didn't mention if the mites are a problem on people or on animals, but the environmental treatment is pretty much the same. Wash and dry (high heat) all bedding and thoroughly vacuum all resting areas. Indoors you can use a product called Steri-Fab on all upholstered furniture, rugs and pet beds and resting areas. Outdoors you can use a product called Permethrin SFR on pet resting areas and other areas frequented by your pet. In most cases, it is not necessary to treat the outdoor environment unless it is frequented by animals such as stray dogs or foxes because sarcoptic mites cannot live very long off of the host animal (usually not more than 72 hours).

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR be used to refill the commonly sold mosquito treatment agents that attach to a garden hose?
If so, how much product would you put into the bottle before topping of with water?
    A
Hose end sprayers are all calibrated differently. For instance, the particular sprayer you have may be calibrated to spray 1 ounce of product per 1 gallon of water but another brand may be calibrated to spray 3 ounces of product per gallon of water. The problem with pre-filled hose end sprayers is that you have no way of knowing how it is calibrated. We recommend that you purchase a new hose end sprayer that is adjustable. We have a great model available on our website called the Chapin Liquid Hose End Sprayer Model 6005. Permethrin SFR is only labeled for mosquito control on livestock premises. A better product for mosquito control outdoors is Talstar P. Talstar P is gentle on vegetation where you will be spraying for mosquitoes and it will last up to one month for mosquito control. When using Talstar for mosquito control, you will use 1 oz of product per gallon of water.

    Q
We have identified zimmerman pine moth, which is more effective the Permethrin or Bifenthrin?
    A
Both permethrin and bifenthrin are synthetic pyrethroids and will provide very comparable results for zimmerman moths. Bifenthrin does tend to last a little longer than permethrin.

    Q
Is Permethrin SFR 36.8% safe to spray on plants in a garden?
    A
The only edible vegetation that Permethrin SFR can be used on would be the fruit and nut trees listed on the product label. A more appropriate product for your needs would be Hi-Yield Indoor/Outdoor 10% Permethrin Insecticide. This particular product is formulated and labeled for use on many different types of edible vegetation including most veggies commonly grown in a home garden.

    Q
Will Permethrin SFR 36.8% kill Stink Bugs?
I live in Virginia where Stink Bugs have become an epidemic. The problem is increased when you kill them, as that is when they emit the most odor, which attracts more Stink Bugs.
    A
Permethrin SFR will kill stink bugs but there are other products such as Cyper WP which lasts a bit longer and stays on the surface of porous areas making it more available to this pest. Unfortunately if you are dealing with them in your house right now you will only see limited results. Stink bugs move into structures to overwinter. They usually squeeze into wall voids, false ceilings, attics and other areas that are inaccessible to people and insecticides. As the heat kicks on in the house, the stink bugs warm up and start becoming active and emerge from hiding, driving homeowners nuts. Because most folks usually have no idea where the bugs are harboring you can only treat around baseboards, door frames and window frames and hope the insects will emerge where you have sprayed. After they contact the treated areas it can take several hours for them to die. It is still worth spraying now to get rid of some of the bugs, but you will keep seeing them until late spring when they will emerge en masse and leave your home. They do not eat, mate or lay eggs while indoors so need to worry about any damage or future baby stink bugs. This year you can be proactive by stopping these pests before they move in for the winter. You should spray Cyper WP outdoors around your door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry once a month August-November. Most folks see a 80-90% reduction in stink bugs the first year and even better results in the following years as the stinkbug pheromone fades away.

    Q
Is Permethrin SFR 38.8% the best choice for killing ticks in the yard and in the house?
Does it have any residual effects, or only on-contact killing? Any effect on unhatched tick eggs? Can it be diluted for use on dogs as a spray or dip?
    A
Permethrin SFR does have a residual effect and a good knockdown quality which is why it is very popular for tick control.  The residual can be expected to last for about 30 days.  The Permethrin SFR will not penetrate tick eggs, however once a tick hatches it is very susceptible to the Permethrin and should die very quickly.  Permethrin can be diluted for application on animals.  Please read the product label for full instructions on treating animals.

    Q
Using Permethrin SFR how many oz per quart water for mix of .5%?
    A
You will need to use 1 2/3 fl. oz. for each gallon of water to get a 0.5% ratio. If you only need to mix one quart of solution at a time you will need to use just under 1/2 (0.43) oz of Permethrin SFR per quart of water to get a 0.5% mixture.

  • Asked by Rene from Killeen Texas

    Q
Can this product, Permethrin SFR 36.8%, be used inside for chiggers?
    A
Permethrin SFR 36.8% is not labeled for chiggers and may not provide adequate results for you. Onslaught insecticide is labeled for chiggers and can be used both indoors and outdoors as a broadcast spray. Chiggers are not known to infest structures. Chiggers are most likely outdoors in your yard. Many people are lead to believe that the infestation is indoors because they do not feel the effects of the chigger bites right away and then are lead to believe they are being bitten at a later time. Treatments for chiggers should begin in May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkempt areas of the lawn and lawn edge. You can also use Onslaught to do a barrier treatment around the outside of your home and in your crawl space to stop pests from moving indoors. If you feel strongly that you are being bitten inside by something we would urge you to get a sample of the pest and have it professionally identified by an entomologist. You can find an entomologist in your area by contacting your local cooperative extension office.
