    Can I use the Protecta Rat Bait Station inside the house?
    A

    Protecta Rat Bait Stations can be used indoors and outdoors. We do not recommend using poison baits indoors because after the rats eat the bait they may go into an inaccessible area to die causing a terrible odor and possibly even a secondary insect infestation (it is a myth that there is a poison bait that will cause the rats to dry out and not smell or to leave the house in search of water). It is important that you place the traps directly in the rats travel path and bait them with an attractive bait such as nuts, dog kibble, canned tuna or peanut butter. Be patient, it could take several days or even a couple of weeks before the rats are comfortable enough with the traps to approach them and be captured. After you have eliminated your current infestation you must take the time to exclude rodents from entering your home in the future.     What could be getting into Protecta Rat Bait Station other then rats & mice
    Put bait in station, and put mouse trap. Something set off trap ate bait and dragged station a foot way with brick on top in FL

    There are a number of other rodents that could get into the Protecta Rat Bait Station. Since there are food scents in the bait, it can certainly attract squirrels, raccoon's, etc. You may need to anchor the station down. You can tie the station to something or anchor them down with bait station anchors.

    Where can I buy an extra key for the Protecta Rat Bait Station? I can't locate mine.

    The Protecta Rat Bait Station does not actually come with a key. It comes with a screw that can be undone by an allen wrench which would have come with the station. This is the same type of allen wrench you can get at any hardware store or that you may have in a tool box. If you do not have the Protecta Rat Bait Station and you have one of the other styles of the Protecta line that does require a key, you can purchase one on our website here: Protecta Key For Bait Stations.

    Where do I place the Protecta Rat Bait Station and how far apart should they be placed?

    You would place the Protecta Rat Bait Stations around the outside of the home or structure you are trying to treat. Normally you put one at each corner of a home, and if treating a commercial building, you would also want one about every 50 feet along the side of the building and near any doors.

    I have chickens, ducks and turkeys. I have a rat problem, now that I'm leaving food out for them.
    The rats are multiplying rapidly. I've hiden traps with peanut butter on them and caught a few, babies that don't know better. But the large rats seem to avoid the traps. What can I use to kill them all without killing my birds?

    We would recommending using a rodenticide inside of a rat bait station such as the Protecta Rat Bait Station . This will keep the chickens, ducks, turkey from consuming the bait, yet provide a feeding station for the rats. This station can hold up to 6 large rats and up to 1lb of bait. It is tamper resistant for children, dogs, cats, etc. Contrac Blox Rodenticide is a great choice because secondary poisoning is very minimal with Contrac as an antidote to the poison (vitamin K1) is readily available.

    The Protecta Rat Bait Station will work great for you. However, we recommend to use bait stations and rodenticide outdoors. Here are the steps we recommend:

    If an infesation already exists in a commercial kitchen, the use of glue boards and or snap traps will be necessary. Place the traps near areas where dropping have been found or near areas where rodents or rodent damage has been found. The use of rodenticides (rat poison or mouse poison) is usually inappropriate in indoor areas. A rodent could succumb to the effects of the bait and die in an area that is inaccessible causing a horrible stench, flies, maggots, roaches, and beetles. After you get rid of the rodents indoors, you will need to stop new rodents from taking their place. Rats and mice are notorious for finding their way indoors. They can find even the tiniest crack in a structure and force there way in. Here are some hints and tips to help prevent an infestation:

    • Try to locate as many entry points as possible and seal them with Stuf Fit Copper Mesh or other suitable material

    • Keep dumpster areas as clean as possible and keep lids closed when not in use.

    • Keep grassy areas mowed to eliminate possible hiding spots.

    • Place rodent bait stations near dumpster areas and along outdoor structure walls to kill rodents outdoors.

    Will rabbits also be attracted to and eat the poison bait?
    I am looking to protect my garden by using bait stations near our shed which is next to our garden. Will these baits also attract rabbits in addition to rats and squirrels?

    The rodenticide baits are only labeled for rats and mice and meant to attractant these types of rodents.  That is not to say that it won't attract other rodents such as a rabbit and if a rabbit was to eat enough of the bait they would die.

    If I place the Protecta Rat bait station on a patio or paver, do the entrances need to be at ground level?

    Yes, you will want them to be able to gain access to the bait inside. We recommend that the Protecta Rat Bait Stations be placed within 50 feet of the building in the rodents travel pathways.

    We apologize we are unclear which rat bait you are referring too. If you are referring to Contrac Blox it will take anywhere between 1-5 days to kill. The kill time is listed on each rodenticide product page.

    Do the Protecta Rat Bait Station make a sound when the mouse enter in to eat the food?

    No they do not produce a sound. You would need to use the key provided with the station to open it and monitor the amount of bait being eaten by the mice.

    Rat under my bird feeder. Squirrels too. Will the squirrel go into the trap for the bait?
    Think the rat is in the crawl space under my kitchen. When he dies, will the smell drive us out of the house? (Protecta trap)

    Squirrels are known to feed on baits used in Protecta Bait Stations along with rats. If a rat or squirrel eats rodenticide baits and then dies under your home it can indeed cause a strong odor.

    Which rat bait station is the best option?
    I have a few rats that are getting into our pool equipment, behind an outdoor fridge, and other areas around the perimeter of the house. I want to put a few stations around the house, which would you recommend between this Protecta station, the LP station, or the Sidekick station? Thank you.

    The Protecta Station is the largest stations and can hold 8 blox at a time and is made a of a thick, hard plastic. The LP  station is a low profile station and can fit into smaller areas and can only hold up to 3 bait blox at a time. The Sidekick is a smaller version of the Protecta  Rat, can still hold 8 bait blox but it is made of a thinner plastic which makes it a little less expensive but which also makes it a little less hardy. The Sidekick will likely fit your needs as long as it is not in an area where it is likely to get stepped on a lot.

    The Protecta Rat Bait Station is not a trap and it does not poison rodents. The Protecta Rat Bait Station has the ability to hold a T-Rex Snap Trap or the rodenticicde blox (poison) of your choosing. Tamper-resistant Protecta Bait Stations are an integral part of baiting. They keep bait  and snap traps away from children, livestock, pets and other non-target animals, as well as protect bait from dust, dirt, moisture and other contaminants so bait stays fresh longer.

    I live in Nebraska and believe I have mice, but more likely some type of small rat in my attic.
    On rare occasion (1-2 times a year) I hear some scratching sounds in the ceiling. The real telltale is that there are droppings, like 1/4-3/8" that fall down out of the vents in our bathrooms. Like 1-2 a day fall out. I don't think it's a huge infestation, but I'm a major rodent phobe, so I want them out! I've never dealt with any rodents besides mice, and these droppings do seem larger than mice. I've had mice in the house before, oh and I know the signs! I'm pretty confident there aren't any rodents in our living area at the moment. We're all clear down here. The deal is I don't have any access to the attic/crawlspace whatever it is, nothing no door opening in the ceiling, nothing. It's a modular home, and there just is no intended way to access the ceiling space. So, my concern is that I want to nip this in the bud and rid our home of whatever few may be up there before they do start multiplying their disgusting selves and become a larger problem. Is there any type of spray that I can spray up through the vents that would allow me to get them? I'm very hesitant to remove the bathroom vent because I'm not that handy, so I'm not sure I could get it re-secured, and I sure don't want to create any type of opening between the two areas, which are now quite happily separated. I don't know how they'd get up there, I guess they have some access point crawling up through the walls? There are no trees around our home that would get them up to roof height...just as an FYI. Any advice would be appreciated.

    There is no spray that can be used to get rid of rats or other rodents in your attic area. The rats must be coming out to eat and drink and if as you suggest they are not invading your home, then they are leaving to go outside to forage. If this is indeed the case you may be able to use a rodenticide bait in tamper resistant bait stations around the exterior of your home. As the rodents leave to forage they will happen upon the bait and hopefully consume it. With this option you do run the risk of having the rodents re-enter your home and die in an inaccessible area which of course could cause an odor issue for a short time period (and perhaps even an insect issue). You could also use the Protecta Rat Bait Station  with a T-Rex snap trap in place of the rodenticide bait. This would eliminate the possibility of the rodents dying in an inaccessible area.

    Are the Protecta Rat Bait Station appropriate for use in an area where they will be exposed to rain and snow?
    I need to use a bait station around the foundation of a barn. The structure has no gutters and water will run off the roof onto the station. Try will also likely get snow covered, if it ever snows again in the Northeast US.

    You can use the Protecta Rat Bait Station in areas where they will be exposed to the elements. It would be advisable to mount the stations on patio block so that they do not actually fill up with water. You can purchase patio blocks and an adhesive that would be suitable for mounting the stations from home improvement stores.

    How do you "clean" a Protecta bait station and remove spoiled bait?
    I have purchased Contrac Blox as well as the Protecta Bait Station. The instructions say to remove spoiled bait as well as keeping the stations "clean" as the mice will avoid the station otherwise. How do you recommend such cleaning? I have several stations that have "moldy" bait as well as numerous mice dropping but not sure if bleaching type cleaning procedures will drive the mice away from the stations themselves. Please help!

    Cleaning the Proctecta Rat Bait station should only consist of removing the spoiled bait, wiping with a cloth or brushing out the station with a clean paint brush and if necessary rinsing with water to remove any leftover debris. You will make the stations less desirable if you clean them with harsh cleaners.
