    Q
How many ounces of Surflan do I need to use per gal of water?
I have evergreen trees planted in rows. How many ounces of Surflan do I need per gallon to control weeds for 4 months? Cultivation of soil around trees is not possible. Will this product still work?
    A
Surflan Pro is a pre-emergent weed control product. Surflan Pro does not control emerged weeds, established weeds, weeds growing from stolens, rhizomes, or root pieces. The area to be treated with this product needs to be weed free at the time of the application. You will need to use 3 fl oz of product per 1-2 gallons of water for 1,000 sq ft. The water in this case is just a carrier and you need to use enough water to make sure you get even coverage and to make sure you are getting the correct amount of product over the 1,000 sq ft area. There are directions on page 7 of the Surflan Pro product label that explains how to properly calibrate your sprayer.

    Q
What is the difference between Surflan AS and Surflan Pro?
    A
There is no difference between the two.  Surflan AS and Surflan Pro are the same product.  The manufacturer, for whatever reason, call them different things to differentiate between the product sizes, but they are the same product.

    Q
What is a good pre-emergent to use in Tucson, AZ on a rock area?
Please advise as to how to apply. Can I apply with a hose end sprayer? Will it harm cactus, mesquite trees and other desert landscaping?
    A

Surflan is often used for this type of weed control with great results depending on the type of weeds you are trying to prevent. You will need about 3 fl oz of Surflan per 1,000 sq ft area. Be sure you review the product label to make sure your desirable plants are listed as being tolerant to the product.  Surflan products are known to be pretty thick and will likely clog a hose end sprayer so it is best to apply with a pump or backpack sprayer. The other problem with using the hose end sprayer for the Surflan application is that they are not very accurate and you can wind up dispensing more/less product than needed in a given area which can lead to less than desirable results.  With pre-emergents it is important to apply the right amount of product over an area and water in so that it gets down to the soil to create the barrier.

    Q
    Does Surflan Pro control crabgrass?
I have a lot of crabgrass on my lawn. Can I use this product next spring to keep the crabgrass from growing?
    A
Surflan Pro is labeled to control crabgrass in your turf and is a great product to use as a pre-emergent.  You should apply pre-emergents now in the fall, and then again in the spring typically.  For optimum times in your area to apply a pre-emergent, you should contact your local county extension office.

  • Asked by Leonard from Car Coral, Florida
    03/03/2016
    Q
What herbicides can I use that will not kill my ground cover?
I have ground cover. Weed removal is tedious.
    A

Depending on the type of weeds you have in your ground cover and the type of ground cover you have will depend on what product options may work for you. Without more specifics we cannot say for certain that the following products will get rid of what you have and will not harm your ground cover. You will want to check the product labels to ensure they meet your needs.

For post emergent control (killing something that has already come up in your treatment areas) if the weeds are grassy you could use something like Grass Out Max or Fertilome Over the Top. This will only kill and target grasses coming up in ornamental beds. If you have broadleaf weeds, hand pulling or spot treating with roundup for post emergent control is about the only option. Broadleaf weed control products cannot be sprayed over the top of ground covers as they are broadleaf plants and will likely be harmed as well.

For pre emergent control (preventing weeds/grasses from coming up through treatment areas) you have a lot more options to choose from. Surflan Pro/Surflan AS, Gallery 75 DF, Snapshot and many others would be wonderful options that you can use in spring and fall to help prevent persistant weeds from coming back throughout the season.

Again, please check the product labels on each page to ensure that the weeds you are targeting and the ground cover you have are on the label as safe for use.

    Q
Can I mix Surflan Pro with Anime 400?
Anime 400 is Dimethylamine salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - 46.47%. I purchased your Surflan pro. I would prefer using Glyphosate but I have a bunch of 2,4-D on hand already. I am looking to knock out broadleafs and prevent emergence as well.
    A
The blend of Surflan Pro and Anime 400 would be a great mix to use for control of the broad leaf weeds. Make sure to not water it in for at least 24 hours and you will see great results. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
I have a small yard, about 5500 sq. feet what is the best way to spray it?
I read that hose end sprayers will likely clog due to the thickness of the product.
    A
Using a pressurized hand-pump sprayer would work well. You can find them in 1 or 2 gallon sizes. 1 gallon generally covers about 1,000 sq ft.

    Q
Which pre-emergents are safe to use under trees?
I have been told that some preemergents are dangerous to use under trees. Which premergents are safe to use on St augustine under my trees (mostly Oaks)
    A

You can use most pre-emergent herbicides that are safe for turfgrass such as St. Augustine around established trees such as oak trees. Surflan Pro is popular for use around ornamental plants and on warm-season turf like St. Augustine. Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper with Dimension is a great choice for a granule for spring application. If you would like to provide us with more information about the weeds you are targeting how much area you are covering, then we can offer other recommendations.
