    Q
need help getting rid of springtails - investation in home
    A
Spring tails can be tough to eliminate because they reproduce very quickly. In almost every case where people have spring tails they also have a moisture problem such as a leaking or sweating pipe, poor ventilation in their crawl space, lots of wet mulch right up next to their house, etc. You must locate and correct the moisture problem to get rid of the spring tails, insecticides alone will not do the job. We do carry Talstar P for indoor and outdoor control which can help you to reduce the numbers of springtails. For indoor control be sure to spray along the baseboards, window frames, door frames, piping like under the bathroom and kitchen sink, etc. As for outdoor control you should spray 2 to 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 to 3 feet out on the ground. If you have mulch close to the foundation wall rake the mulch back away from the house and spray Talstar P under and over top the mulch. That will give you a 4 to 6 foot barrier around the exterior of your house. If you are on a crawlspace be sure to inspect that area for any moisture issues and spray accordingly.

  • Asked by Gail from Sf Bay Area

    Q
    Springtails
We sprayed Talstar P on our Slider twice, we are still seeing a few milling around. How long does the product work to kill the existing Springtails, or should we spray again, b/c we are seeing nits, (babies).
    A
Talstar has a residual of at least 30 days outdoors and 90 days indoors. Depending on how healthy the springtail is and how long it spends on a surface treated by the Talstar, will depend on how long it actually takes for each individual one to die. Could be hours or even a day. Also if you are not treating the main nest, and only the satellite colony you are only temporarily fixing your problem. More will appear as they continue to migrate and you will need to fix the moisture issue in your home that is attracting the springtails as well. Until the moisture is gone or the main nest is found and eliminated, you will have an ongoing battle with the pest.

    Q
I have Talstar P and have used Ortho Bug-B-Gon, can I use that hose end sprayer and how much do I put in?
I figured about 1/3 teaspoon, am I close or way off?
    A
You can use Talstar P in a hose end sprayer as long as the hose end sprayer can be calibrated to spray the correct usage rate as specified on the product label. Most folks use the 1 oz of product to 1 gallon of product rate for outdoor insect control.

    Q
Is Talstar 100 EC the same as Talstar 7.9?
Talstar 100 EC appears to be for agricultural use, whereas 7.9 is not. This relates to inadvertent mist on vegetable garden of 7.9.
    A
You will need to contact FMC to find out if any harmful effects will come of the mist of the Talstar P. We do not carry Talstar 100 EC so we cannot comment on the difference between the two and how they effect vegetation differently. You can reach FMC at 1-800-321-1362.

    A

We recommend using Talstar P to treat those types of mosquito's. You can apply Talstar P inside, outside in your lawn around trees shrubs and ornamentals. Please be sure to treat the undersides of leaves on trees and shrubs, and leave debris as these areas attract mosquito's.

    Q
Your best product for killing carpet beetles?
    A

Please visit our Carpet Beetle Control Page.

Vacuuming: Carpet beetle larvae like to feed in dark, undisturbed locations like closets, attics, basements, and storage areas. The wide availability of food sources for the larvae (including dust and lint, and pet hair) makes vacuuming the best way to ensure there is minimal food for the larvae to feed on. Vacuuming can also help to remove the larvae and adult beetles already in the home. Regular vacuuming and laundering of rugs, furniture, and linens can help to ensure the beetles are removed and have no food source. If you find a contaminated item, bag and remove this item from your home, if possible.

Proper storage: Before storing silks, woolens, or furs, dry clean as the beetles are attracted to stains and soiled garments. Store in a well-sealed container, using mothballs. Mothballs can limit the beetle’s attraction to the wool or silk. Store pet food, dried meat, and other dried animal products in a well-sealed container.

Insecticides: For things that cannot be washed or dry cleaned, insecticides are the best bet for prevention and eradication. Both Talstar P and Suspend SC are excellent products to use.

Insecticides can be used for spot-treatments, as a boundary at the edges of rugs, under rugs, under furniture, walls and floors of closets, shelving, cracks, and lint or dust accumulating areas. Be careful around oriental rugs or other fabrics, as some insecticides can stain. Never spray clothing or bedding with insecticide, and always read instructions.

    Q
What do I use to eliminate ants and small (1/16 in) hard shelled black bugs.
I live in zip code 54646 in sandy soil. Some ants are beginning to gather under my wooden jealousy windows, on the vinyl sill. I can't identify the type of ant, I just want to get rid of them. I also find the hard shelled bugs in different places of my house. What product can I use to get rid of these ants and hard shelled bugs?
    A
It is very hard to make an accurate recommendation if we are not sure what we are treating. Talstar P will treat for ants and other types of insects like the ones you are describing. You want to spray the perimeter of your home 2-3 up the side and 2-3 feet out. On the inside make applications to cracks, crevices and entry points. Your Local Cooperative Extension Office may be able to shed light on what type of pest you are dealing with.

  • Asked by Mark from Philadelphia, Pa

    Q
What is the best way to eliminate cicada killers?
They are taking over my lawn year after year. Help! They bury in the ground all night and fly around the yard all day. Not good for my son or my dog. They can't go outside during the day, there are too many of these things flying around. Time to eliminate them......
    A
Cicada Killers are actually benificial insects and will not harm you, your son or your dog. They are not aggressive insects just ominous looking because of their size, and you would literally have to take one and force it on your skin to get it to bite you. If you are wanting to eliminate them, the best way to treat is to use a dust in each hole in the yard. This may seem extremely time consuming and tedious but it is truly the most effective and thorough treatment method. Dusting the holes with something like Tempo 1% Dust will allow it to flow through the nest better than a liquid. You could also use the Talstar P or the liquid version of Tempo-Tempo SC Ultra-since it has a quicker knock down to control the surface areas they could land to help control new ones that enter the area. Dust the holes and treat plant/lawn surfaces with Tempo every 30 days through the season. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
I have a Tube system installed. Do you sell delivery system tool?
I want to inject chemicals myself.
    A
We apologize but we do not sell any of the parts for the tube systems. However, in many professionals opinion an outside perimeter treatment is better anyways than treating the tubes inside the walls.  This is because when you treat the outside perimeter of the home you will kill the bugs outside before they get into the walls.  We would recommend Talstar as it is the most popular general used insecticide that we sell.

    Q
Best product for general pest control?
As a new home owner I am curious to know the professional opinion for bug prevention I can apply to my house. I live in forest eco system with lots of fir trees and shrubs... I see ants, occasional spiders, and mosquitos. Is there a particular time of year? Or product you recommend for preventative treatment and maintenance?
    A
Our most popular general use product is called Talstar.  It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets.  It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer.  It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments.  It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.

  • Asked by Maria from Hot Springs, Ar
    09/03/2013
    Q
Is Talstar P effective in killing roaches outdoors? If so what is the proper mixture?
    A
Talstar P is labeled for roaches, and should do a great job helping you eliminate the infestation.  You will need about 1 fl oz of product diluted into 1 gallon of water for every 1,000 sq ft of space you need to treat.

The Talstar is a residual which means it will not be a contact kill for the roaches. It could kill a roach within a few hours or within a day depending on how healthy the roach is, and how long it spent on a surface that was treated with Talstar. The spray will typically last indoors 90 days and outdoors 30 days.

  • Asked by Pat from Douglasville, Ga (house Is In Forest Park, Ga)
    09/16/2013
    Q
I purchased Talstar P for house with fleas, and it did not get rid of them.
I sprayed my rental property with Talstar P for fleas, and it did nothing to get rid of them. I sprayed inside and outside the house. I purchased this product because it was rated as very good for fleas, roaches, and other types of pests. Any suggestions? At this time, the house is empty. My tenant moved out 1st of September, and before I can offer it for rent again, I have to get rid of the fleas.
    A
You should first note that Talstar P should not be used indoors for flea control because it is not labeled for broadcast applications indoors. For indoor use we usually recommend a product such as Ultracide. Ultracide contains an insecticide to knockdown the jumping, biting adults and an insect growth regulator to stop the growth pattern and sexual development of the immature flea larva.
It is our recommendation and industry standard that you vacuum immediately before the application of Ultracide and every day or every other day after the application for the next two weeks. Vacuums can physically remove a decent percentage of flea eggs that are in the carpet, along with much of the organic crud that the flea larvae feed on. A critical part of the diet of the larva is dried blood, present there as fecal material from the fleas that are on the pets. Wherever the pets spend time they will shed the fecal matter and the eggs, so it is extremely important that you focus on these potential hot spots where the pets sleep. A vacuum also will remove a small percentage of larvae, but the larva is pretty tenacious, and will wrap around the carpet fibers down there at the base of the pile, and hold on for dear life as the vacuum passes by. The pupa is even tougher to physically remove, for it uses fibers as part of its "cocoon". But, the vacuum will stimulate the flea adults still in their pupa form to quickly emerge as the adult, and at this point perhaps be sucked up in the vacuum. Even if they are not removed by the vacuum, at least they now are exposed and susceptible to your treatment. After two weeks most infestations require that you do a second application of the Ultracide and continue with the vacuuming.

    Q
Do the chemicals have an expiration date?
do the chemicals lose strength after awhile. I have some Talstar and Demand and was wondering if I need to purchase new due to having these bottles for about 4 yrs.
    A
When stored in ideal conditions - out of extreme temperatures and direct sunlight - most insecticides, Talstar and Demand included - will last for 5 years on the shelf. If yours have been properly stored, you do have some life left in your bottles!

    Q
Why does the label say not to broadcast spray Talstar P indoors for fleas?
    A
The manufacturer has created the product, performed the research and testing for Talstar P. We do not make the product labels or the products. For additional information on Talstar P, please contact FMC at 1-800-321-1362. We do carry some great liquid concentrates for indoor floor broadcast such as Onslaught, Conquer, Permethrin and Tengard. They can be mixed with Archer IGR or NyGuard IGR for indoor flea treatments along with vacuuming even on hard surface floors. A minimum of two treatments outside and inside every two weeks. Please contact us at 866.581.7378 if you would like more information on treating your home for fleas.
