    Q
Can Talstar P be used in a broadcast hose-end sprayer for pests in the grass?
If so, is there a guide for how much to use?
    A
Yes, Talstar P can be used in a hose end sprayer to apply to a large area like a lawn. You apply at the same rate as a hand held sprayer.  Typically, this is one ounce per gallon of water per 1000 square feet.  So, if you wanted to treat your lawn that was 5000 square feet, you would place 5 ounces of Talstar P in the hose end sprayer and then set or fill your sprayer to the 5 gallon mark.

    Q
What is the difference between Talstar P and Talstar One?
    A
Talstar P and Talstar One are actually the same thing. The manufacturer changed the name of the product from Talstar One to Talstar P, so that it would be more in line with the rest of their products. The P stands for Professional.

    Q
I have bees & bee hives. Will applications of Talstar P harm them?
    A
Talstar P is not a selective insecticide and it will kill any insects that come into contact with treated areas. You can reduce the risk to your bees by keeping applications away from areas where the bees are actively foraging and at times when the bees are not active in general. You may also consider using Mavrik Perimeter insecticide for outdoor pests, which is non-repellent and non-toxic to honeybees after it is dried. You will want to read the product label to see if this fits your needs.

    Q
Will Talstar P still provide mosquito control in a small yard even if my neighbors do not maintain their yard?
I want a treatment plan for mosquitoes. Here is my problem. My yard is only 50ft deep and 100ft wide. I can spray my yard and shrubs with Talstar P, but since it is such a small area, won't the mosquitoes just come over from my neighbors? -they have lots of plants and foliage and don't keep things nice and trim. Their bad habits die hard, so talking to them is not a long term solution. Will Talstar P provide me some releif, or am I wasting my efforts and money?
    A

With mosquito control you want to not only be sure that the foliage on your trees and ornamentals are taken care of by maintenance and spraying, but that any standing water no matter how small is either eliminated your treated with a larvicide so the breeding cycle in the mosquitoes can be disrupted. Talstar P is one of our most recommended products for mosquito control. It will keep down the population even if your neighbor doesn't to the yard maintenance that you do.

    Q
Will Talstar P kill Japanese beetles if sprayed on the lawn? If so, what usage rate should I use?
    A
Talstar P will help control adult Japanese beetles when used at a 1 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft area rate. You can mix the 1 fl oz of Talstar into 1-2 gallons of water to insure even coverage. Talstar P will not work well for control of beetle grubs or larva and is not labeled for this use. If you need to control the grubs you will need to use a product that is labeled for them such as Dylox 6.2 or Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone.

    Q
    Why was Dursban banned?
    A
Dursban was banned by the EPA around 2000-2001 because of concerns for the health of humans and wildlife. When products such as Dursban are misused or over-used by people this is often the outcome. The pest control industry has produced other products that are as effective as Dursban, but they do not have the same health risks. Talstar P, Suspend SC, Cy-kick CS are a few of the most commonly used pest control products today.

    Q
The best way to spray Talstar on lawn.
When spraying for mosquitoes, is it better to spray a couple days before or a couple days after mowing? Or same day before/after? Also, is it better to spray a day following rain? Or after a few dry days?
    A
For the best application of Talstar P to your lawn, you want to first mow the grass a couple days ahead of application. You want to make sure there is no rain in the forecast at least 4 hours after application, to ensure the Talstar will stick. It is safe to spray Talstar in and around ornamentals, trees, shrubs, lawn, and can be used indoors as well.

  • Asked by Michelle from Massachusetts

    Q
Will Talstar kill fleas outside? How quick does it work for an infested area?
My dog keeps getting fleas outside and then carrying in house. The dog has been washed and house bombed with flea bombs but fleas keep returning.
    A
The best products for flea control outdoors would be Talstar P mixed with NyGuard IGR. The Talstar is the insecticide that will kill the fleas and leave a residual, and the NyGuard is the birth control that will halt the infestation from growing. Mix these in your sprayer together with water and spray any areas outdoors where you are having a problem with fleas or any other insect. After your initial application of the two products, you will respray the Talstar by itself every 2 weeks until the infestation has dropped in number, and then back off to spraying only once every 30 days. The NyGuard IGR will typically hold up to the outdoor elements for 4 months but if you have heavy rains or long periods of drought and heat, you may want to reapply again earlier than this with one of your monthly Talstar applications. For indoor control, you would use Ultracide which is a flea aerosol. It comes ready to use and has both the adulticide and igr (birth control) to provide you with the same type of control indoors as you have outdoors. You will need to go through and vacuum all flooring and furniture prior to using the product. Once vacuumed, use the Ultracide to spray down all carpets, hardwoods, baseboards, rugs, pet bedding and furniture to eliminate the fleas. After application you will leave the home until the product has had time to dry which normally takes about an hour or so. Once dry, all pets, children and adults can re-enter the home and resume normal activity. You will need to vacuum daily for 14 days and then do a second application of the Ultracide.

    Q
Do I need to wear a respirator, face mask or gloves while handling and applying Talstar P?
My son is concerned about needing to buy a respirator, gloves etc to protect himself while spraying. Is this necessary? I want to be able to reassure him he will not be harmed during the spraying process. Also, if the product is premixed and he has extra, what is the best way to dispose of the excess premixed solution?
    A
According to the Talstar P product label, unless you are applying Talstar P in a small confined area that you can not immediately exit after the application, it is usually not necessary to use a respirator. We do recommend either wearing gloves or thoroughly washing your hands after handling insecticides. You should try not to mix more than you need, but in the event that you do, you will pour the unused solution out right up against the foundation of the structure.

Can birds die from eating insects that have died from Talstar P?

    A
No, Talstar P would not harm birds eating the dead insects. Talstar P is a very safe product when used as directed on the product label. In fact, Talstar P is even labeled to be used in poultry houses where birds come in direct contact with the product.

    Q
How effective is Talstar P on fire ants?
    A

Talstar P is effective for fire ant control.  Per the product label, "Fire Ant Mound control is optimized by combining broadcast applications that will control foraging workers and newly mated fly-in queens with mound drenches that will control existing colonies. If the soil is not moist, then it is important to irrigate before application or use a high volume application. Apply broadcast treatments at 0.5 to 1 fluid oz. per 1,000 square feet. Use enough finished volume to penetrate thatch or sod. Treat mounds by applying 1 oz of Talstar P per mound in 1 to 2 gallons water by sprinkling the mound until it is wet and treat 3 feet out around the mound. Use the higher volume for mounds larger than 12”. Treat mounds with sufficient force to break their apex and allow the insecticide solution to flow into the ant tunnels. For best results, apply in cool weather (65 - 80 F) or in the early morning or late evening hours."

  • Asked by Linda from Magee, Ms

    Q
Will Bifenthrin kill grasshoppers? The big orange & black ones that get about 3 inches long?
They hatch out in March or April & are about 1/2 in long to start with, but grow to about 3 inches long & will destroy any leafy flower or bush. The hatch out by the 100's.
    A
Bifenthrin products would be a good choice for grasshopper control. You should start applications before the grasshoppers have a chance to hatch. You should thoroughly spray your lawn and water in the application with about a .25 in of water to help the bifenthrin get past the thatch layer and into the soil where grass hoppers actually develop. If you already have grasshoppers you can use Talstar P or Bifen IT at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per 1 gallon of water for the quickest knockdown.
