Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide is a selective post-emergent herbicide that controls annual and perennial grasses in turf. This includes Crabgrass as well as seedling Johnsongrass, and it will suppress rhizome Johnsongrass and is safe for use in tall Fescue.
The grass should not be drenched or heavily wet before an application of Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide to help the product contact the leave surface. You should use a surfactant like the Non Ionic Surfactant for Herbicides with Acclaim to aid in penetration as directed on the product label.
Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide should be applied when the dogs are not present. They can return when the treated surfaces have completely dried.
For broadcast applications you will use between 3.5 and 20 ounces of Acclaim Extra per acre in 40-80 gallons of water for sufficient coverage. You must refer directly to the product label for specifics as it varies for turf type for max usage rates without harming the lawn.
The first thing you need to know when using an herbicide such as Acclaim and many others, is that the exact amount of water you dilute it with is not important. It is only important to make sure you are using the correct amount of product per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. Use too much and you risk damaging your lawn, use too little and you will not get adequate results. To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix the product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated.
Ex: If you use Acclaim at 15 ounces per acre, that comes down to 0.34 ounces of the product per 1000 sq/ft in however many gallons of water it takes you to cover that area.
Per the product label for Acclaim Extra Herbicide, rainfall or irrigation within one hour of application may cause a reduction in grass control. Allow spray deposit to dry before irrigation. If stunting or injury occurred with the previous application, avoid applying until turfgrass recovery is complete (unless temporary stunting can be tolerated). You should wait at least 14 days before a reapplication with Acclaim Herbicide. Do not reapply Acclaim Extra to previously treated seedling Kentucky bluegrass for at least two months.
For fescue and ryegrass, you can overseed immediately after using Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide. All other turf types should be overseeded after a 21 day waiting period.
Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide has a shelf life of about 3-5 years if kept out of extreme temperatures (above 90 and below freezing) and direct sunlight. If the product has separated and you are not able to get it back into suspension after shaking, then it would be recommended to replace it with new stock.
According to the Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide product label do not mow treated areas for at least 24 hours to allow time for penetration and translocation into the grass weeds. The effectiveness of Acclaim Extra Herbicide is reduced when grass clippings interfere with thorough spray coverage of the target weeds.
