    Q
Using a 50 gallon tank what should I use for pest control on the exterior of the house? perimeter
Best cost efficient. Maybe something that mixes by the gallon. Not be sqft.
    A
Our most popular general use product is called Bifen, which is also very cost efficient.  It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets.  It can be mixed by the gallon or in larger quantities.  It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments.  It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests.

    Q
I'm applying Bifen IT and it doesn't kill the fleas!
Ive fenced a 400 sq ft area for my dogs, pick up droppings everyday, grass is consistently wet/damp
    A
Bifen alone will not eradicate fleas. You will also need to mix in an IGR to break down the reproductive cycle. Bifen kills the adults that come in contact with it, but then you still have the immature fleas growing and then reproducing. It is a constant battle without the IGR. We recommend Nyguard as it will last up to 7 months.

If I apply Bifen IT on them, how many days do I need to wait until the next application? One more question, I see that typically 1 oz of Bifen IT to 1 gallon of water. Is this formula safe to indoor as well?
    A
Bifen IT needs to be reapplied once every 30 days. It can be applied indoors to cracks and crevices.

    Q
    Bifen IT for Springtails
I purchased this product from you at the end of last summer. I own a split level home and I have springtails crawling around on my basement floor and on the wood above the sil plate. Anyway I mixed 2 oz of bifen it to a bit less than 2 gal of water and sprayed. In less than 2 hours I have springtails crawling directly over the area that I sprayed with no ill effects. So? This is actually the 2nd time that I've sprayed. The first time the same thing occured.
    A
Bifen IT is labeled for springtails. Depending on how healthy the springtail is and how long it spends on a surface treated by the Bifen IT, will depend on how long it actually takes for each individual one to die. It could be hours or even a day. Also, if you are not treating the main nest, and only the satellite colony, you are only be temporarily fixing your problem. More will appear as they continue to migrate and you will need to fix the moisture issue in your home that is attracting the springtails as well. Until the moisture is gone or the main nest is found and eliminated, you will have an ongoing battle with the pest.

    Q
Is Bifen IT safe around lake house perimeter?
    A
Bifen IT would be safe depending on how close the house is to the actual lake as it is toxic to aquatic invertabretes so you would not want to happy where drift or runoff could go into the lake. If you are closer to the lake and runoff could be an issue, Essentria IC3 would be a better product. Essentria is safe to use around aquatic life and it will work great for mosquitoes and many other insects.

Does Bifen have any effect on bees and wasps? If not, is there something I can add to it when I spray?

    A
Yes, Bifen IT is labeled to kill wasps. It also states on the label that it is highly toxic to bees. Bifen IT is labeled to be broadcast across your lawn, sprayed on flowers, trees, bushes, etc. It is not labeled to be used on any type of edibles. Bifen IT can be used in a hose end sprayer as well.

    Q
So where does the "much less expensive" part start?
Everyone claims this is just like Talstar, but quote "much less expensive". It's nearly the exact same price!!
    A
There are different sizes of Talstar P and Bifen I/T and prices can fluctuate based on fair market value at the time of purchase. If you compare the price of each product respectively to their sizes there is a substantial savings available. For example, a quart of Talstar P is priced at $36.50 right now but a quart of Bifen I/T is listed for $22.64 - That is a savings of $13.86 for the same size container!

    A
We would not recommend using Bifen IT on firewood. We recommend only using a product that is labeled for that. Please contact your Local Cooperative Extension Office to advice on what would be safe to use.

    Q
When doing a broadcast lawn application, is the Bifen IT effectiveness weakened after mowing the lawn? Or once applied is it seeped deep enough into the soil that it is not affected?
    A
For the best application of Bifen IT to your lawn, you want to first mow the grass a couple days ahead of application. You want to make sure there is no rain in the forecast at least 4 hours after application, to ensure it will stick. It is safe to spray Bifen IT in and around ornamentals, trees, shrubs, lawn, and can be used indoors as well.

    Q
If possible, I would like to also treat for spiders and ants. Is all of this possible with one solution?
I have a 3 story building with hard to reach places around the soffit. I have a problem with carpenter bees/wasps and the soffit around the building is wood. I would like to be able to treat the building using a solution that can be applied with a PRESSURE WASHER to reach the areas not easily accessible with a ladder. It would be great if I could spray down the building with one solution.
    A

We would recommend applying a product like Bifen IT in our Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer. This sprayer will reach well over 30ft. We do not carry any products that can be applied in a pressure washer for this type of insect control. You will mix the product at 1 oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft monthly on the exterior. Please let us know if you need anything else.

    Q
Does Bifen IT degrade if container is left in the sunlight?
I left my container of Bifen IT on the side of my house for a month, where it gets a few hours of tropical sun (Hawaii). It as yellowed some, but seems otherwise OK. Will it still work or should I throw it away (properly) and buy new?
    A
Insecticides should be stored out of extreme heat and direct sunlight. The yellowing may have been the container turning rather than the concentrate. The sunlight and heat degrade the active ingredient and greatly reduce the shelf life, so you would probably be best served using fresh product.

  • Asked by Jason from Louisburg
    05/11/2015
    Q
Will Bifen IT not only control but kill ticks in my yard and if so how long will it take to kill ticks?
    A
Bifen IT is labeled to eradicate ticks. How long it takes the ticks to die after they come into contact with a treated area will depend on a number of factors. It will depend on the maturity of the tick as well as how long they stayed on the treated area, how long it has been since the area was treated and the concentration that was used to treat the area. Typically it can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or so for them to die. It can take several weeks for you to stop seeing ticks indoors because the ticks like to stay hidden which also means they could be staying out of treated areas and eggs may hatch out prolonging the infestation. We recommend doing follow up treatments every two weeks at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per gallon of water until you do not see any ticks. It is also recommended to add an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to impede the reproductive cycle of the insect. For more information on treating ticks, please check out our article on Tick Control.

    Q
why does Bifen IT have 2 pour spouts?
    A
Bifen IT has two pour spouts because one is for measuring. You squeeze the bottom of the bottle and the product will go up the straw on the side and into the measuring cup to be mixed.

    Q
Tip reads: “Remember that Bifen IT is non selective and will kill the good guys…”
…so avoid spraying flowers. I was under the impression that these insecticides have a residual effect & that's why you only need to apply a few times a year to kill. If that's the case, how does it NOT kill the beneficials that happen to land on leaves, grass to rest? We have swampy wooded acreage w/ mosquitoes but we also have dragonflies, butterflies, & bees. When we broke down & used a company (cyfluthrin/ bifenthrin) after trying TONS of organic options, I noticed that I didn't have any more of my beneficials. We are organic but didn't know there was swampland when we looked at the house w/ snow on the ground last year. I didn't even plant any more flowers for fear I'd 'entice them to their doom'.
    A
Bifen IT is not labeled for beneficial insects, but it has the potential to kill them if they come in contact with the treated area.
