    Q
Will Bora-Care kill all types of termites?
I live in a East Tennessee and not sure what type(s) of termites are in this area.
    A

Bora-Care will kill all types but might not be the best choice depending on the type you have.  Subterranean termites and dry wood termites are two very different insects that require two very different treatments. We recommend that you get your termite infestation identified before you select a treatment method to be sure you are choosing the proper treatment method. Here two articles that can help you learn the differences between the two types of termites: Drywood Termites or Subterranean Termites. If you are still unsure after reading the articles you can always call in a professional company. Almost all termite companies will offer a free inspection and they will tell you what type of termites you are dealing with and how they recommend treating for the. At that point you can choose to hire them or do it your self. Termidor SC is the top termite product on the market. Termidor is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. Termidor controls all types of termites including Subterranean, Formosan, and Drywood termites though the application method will be different for each type of termite.

    Q
Is it safe to sand wood after it has been treated with Bora-Care?
Can I use wood treated with this product to build things after it has dried? Does sanding it release anything that is harmful to humans or pets?
    A

Yes, after the Bora-Care has dried, you can sand and finish the wood. It usually takes 24-48 hours to fully dry. Nothing harmful is released into the air in doing so.

    Q
Does Boracare even penetrate hard woods as well?
    A

Boracare can be used on ANY raw wood that is not painted, stained, or sealed. Even hardwoods. Since it dries on clear, it is no problem to stain, paint, or seal when you are done or apply a clear coat finish.

    Q
Do I need to sand 80 year old barnwood before applying Bora-Care?
The wood is untreated and raw.
    A

It is not necessary to sand wood that is raw when treating with Bora-Care. If the wood is painted, stained or sealed then you would want to sand first and then treat.

    Q
Is Bora-Care the right product to clean barn wood before bringing it inside our home?
    A

Bora-Care would be great for applying to raw, cleaned wood for treatment against wood destroying organisms. We do carry a wood cleaner that you can apply first to remove any staining or discoloration called Mold-Clean.

  • Asked by Robert from Mount Dora, Fl

    Q
Is Boric acid repellent or not?
In your Subterranean Termite Treatment Guide your pro tip says "Using the Boracare first can cause the outdoor colony to branch off in a different direction" implying that boric acid is a repellent. Yet quoting https://entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef614, " Unlike many insecticides, boric acid has no repellency to insects". Can you please resolve this seeming discrepancy for me? Is boric acid repellent or not? This is a very important issue to clarify for choosing boric acid treatment or not. Thank you very much.
    A

Boracare contains borate, a form of Boron, that is different than boric acid products. Borate products are water soluble and are used in wood treatments as it can penetrate into the wood and/or used as a dust if using Timbor.  Boric acid (dust) is not water soluble and is only for crack and crevice treatments.  Both forms are not repellent but when dealing with subterranean termites Boracare is not the best product to use as it will only kills the termites that physically ingest the wood.  This can cause the termites to start dying off quickly which sends a signal to the queen below ground that the area is bad and this can cause them to move to another location that is possibly untreated or inaccessible.  It is a great product for Drywood Termites which are all in the wood they are infesting.  When dealing with subterranean it is best to use a product like Termidor SC or Dominion which will be a slow kill and have a transfer effect so that it can kill the entire colony below ground.

    Q
I have termites in my mulberry trees. Will Bora care work to treat the termite infestation?
    A

Bora-Care cannot be used on trees or plants.  It is for cut lumber only.  Borates will kill any living plant, shrub, grass or tree.  Termites do not attack live, healthy trees.  If you have termites in a tree you would need to treat the nest directly by drilling holes into the dead parts of the tree where the colony is infesting.  This can be done with something like Dominion 2L or a foam like Termidor Foam.

    Q
Does Boracare leave a shiny/glossy kind of residue?
I used Boracare underneath my foyer. Mixed 1:1 of water:Boracare with drill for 5 to 10 minutes in warm to hot water. Used right away. Some spots have a shiny or glossy look to the wood and I just want to make sure this is normal and it seeped into the wood.
    A

Boracare should not leave any kind of visible residue once it has dried.  If you are seeing spots that look shiny, this is usually because these areas have not yet fully dried.  In most cases, it takes 24-48 hours for a Boracare application to dry thoroughly.

    Q
Will the Boracare that I used previously take care of the powderpost beetles in my barn now?
I previously applied one of your products approx. 1 yr ago and some beetles are still present. I don't remember the product name at this time. Where do I go from here? I have powderpost beetles in my barn. What product should i use.
    A

It was Boracare that you purchased before, and provided that you used that correctly when applying and sealed it within 90 days of applications it will take care of the powderpost beetles that are present now. They have to feed on the wood in order to ingest the Boracare at this time to kill them.

    Q
Can I mix Bora-Care with Termidor SC for a single application, if not, how would you apply for an infestation?
    A

No, you would not mix Bora-Care with Termidor SC for a single application.  Bora-Care is a wood treatment product that is great for drywood termites.  Termidor SC  is made to adhere to soil and is poured in a 6-inch deep trench that is dug around the foundation of the home.  So depending on which type of termite you have will determine which product would be best for you.

  • Asked by Clay from Seattle, Wa
    07/21/2015
    Q
Does the second coat of Boracare have to be applied within a certain time?
Does a 2nd coat of BoraCare have to be applied (painted or sprayed) before the first coat dries? I'm concerned the 2nd coat might not penetrate adequately if the 1st coat is totally dry because I wasn't able to do the 2nd coat for several days or longer.
    A

Per Boracare's label you need to allow the first application to dry by waiting at least 20 minutes in between applications. For some applications, like when treating for Subterranean or Formosan termites, you may need to wait at least an hour between applications.

    Q
Does it do any good to treat pressure treated wood with Bora-Care?
    A

Boracare can be used on wood that is pressure treated, but it may take longer to absorb into the wood. In some cases, such as in a pre-construction termite treatment, pressure treated wood must be treated with Boracare. Boracare is preferred over other treatments such as Timbor in treating furniture because Boracare dries clear and will leave the furniture in its natural state. It will also absorb much further into the wood so you know the infestation is treated. Boracare is diluted with water at a 1:1 - 1:5 ratio depending on the pest you are targeting.

  • Asked by Benny from San Diego California.

    Q
How many years will I need to reapply Boracare if I don't do surface finish after treated deck?
I applied boracare on my old deck without surface finish about 4 years ago. I want to know how many years I will do it again.
    A
Without treating the surface with a sealant, paint or stain after applying Boracare, the product will evaporate out the surface within a couple months. We would recommend doing a complete reapplication of your decking with Boracare and followed by a surface finish. It is important to seal your treatment of Boracare within 1 month with a sealant, paint, or stain to ensure the Boracare is locked into the wood. You will need to reapply the sealant or paint per the product label you choose.

  • Asked by Dave from San Jose, Ca

    Q
Do I need a respirator and safety glasses while spraying BoraCare?
Is Boracare harmful to humans if inhaled? Does Boracare produce toxic if fumes if inhaled? Will direct contact with Boracare damage eyes?
    A
BoraCare is relatively safe product to use as long as the Product Label is followed. The active ingredient in Boracare is an inorganic salt. The BoraCare product label recommends that users wear goggles, gloves, long sleeve shirts, long pants, shocks, and shoes. If you will be performing the appliction in an area that is NOT well ventilated such as an attaic or crawlspace then a respirator mask would be recommended. As for the effects of the odor/fumes or eye contact, we would recommend you contact Nisus, the manufacturer at 800-264-0870.

Do I need a mask when spraying Boracare?
I will be spraying in the crawlspace that is 1200 square foot by an average of 1.5 feet high, using an electric pump spray. What kind of mask do I need? Is N95 sufficient or do I need a charcoal respirator mask?
    A
If you are in an enclosed area like a crawl space, you should wear a respirator.  It is recommended that you wear a P100 rated mask, which we do sell.

  • Asked by Ken from San Antonio, Tx
    09/24/2015
    Q
If Bora-Care only penetrates up to 4 inches thick, will it kill an active dry wood termite infestation? Wouldn't they be able still eat the interior of the beam and continue to live?
I have active dry wood termites in thick interior beams inside the house. The beams are exposed and untreated, and it would be possible for me to spray Bora-Care on 3 sides of them. However, the beams are about 10 in x 10 thick.
    A

Bora-Care can be applied to raw, natural wood and penetrate 4 inches into the wood surfaces. It is recommended to apply to all sides of the wood for the best results. You will mix it at a 1:1 ratio for active drywood termites and it should be diluted with hot water in a separate container and mixed completely first. After it is mixed properly, you can add it to your spray tank for application. Please refer to the link below for the application chart based on dimensions.

    Application Chart

Bora-Care can take up to 90 days to completely penetrate through all of the wood to where all of the termites are.  Bora-Care does not kill the termites by touch.  The termites walking on the wood are not effected.  Bora-Care kills the termites by ingestion.  After the Bora-Care has moved through the wood, the termites that are still in the wood will die when they continue to eat and ingest the Bora-Care with the wood.  You should treat all exposed sides of the wood that you can get to.  One treatment is normally enough unless the wood you are treating is more than 8 inches thick.  The termites will not spread easily to other areas so that is not a concern.
