Product Overview

Certainty Turf Herbicide is a selective, post-emergent herbicide that controls labeled weeds in residential and commercial turf and ornamentals.

Certainty Turf Herbicide is easy and flexible to use.  Certainty weed killer offers excellent control of both purple and yellow nutsedge, Kyllina, globe and annual sedge, and broadleaf weeds. Combined with a non-ionic surfactant, Certainty Herbicide attacks nutsedge through broadcast applications or spot treatments.  Certainty also controls cool-season grasses, such as Poa annua (annual bluegrass), Poa trivialis, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass, in warm-season turfs.

With Certainty Turf Herbicide, you get the most complete package of turf safety, application flexibility and broad-spectrum weed control versus the competition.

Dallisgrass:  Please note that Certainty is labeled for suppression of dallisgrass only and can only be used for dallisgrass when tank mixed with another herbicide such as MSMA or Revolver (which are not for residential use).

Certainty Herbicide is a professional-grade solution designed to control tough weeds in both residential and commercial turf. It is specially formulated for warm-season grasses, providing reliable control of:

  • Broadleaf weeds
  • Sedges (including yellow and purple nutsedge)
  • Kyllinga

This herbicide is known for its excellent nutsedge control and flexible application options. It can be used as:

  • Broadcast applications for larger areas
  • Spot treatments for targeted control

For best results, apply Certainty with a non-ionic surfactant to improve coverage and absorption.

Overall, Certainty Herbicide offers a well-rounded combination of effectiveness, turf safety, and application versatility for managing weeds in warm-season lawns.

*Note: Certainty Turf Herbicide is not labeled for golf course putting greens or within 4 feet of the putting green.

Dallisgrass:  Please note that Certainty is labeled for suppression of dallisgrass only and can only be used for dallisgrass when tank mixed with another herbicide such as MSMA or Revolver (which are not for residential use).

Why Choose Certainty Herbicide?

  • Broad-spectrum weed control
  • Strong performance on difficult weeds like nutsedge
  • Safe for labeled warm-season turf when used as directed
  • Flexible and easy to apply

When is the best time to apply Certainty Herbicide to my lawn?

Certainty Herbicide works best when applied to established warm-season grasses (such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and others) while target weeds are actively growing.

For optimal results and lawn safety:

  • Apply before green-up (while grass is still dormant) or
  • Apply after the lawn has fully greened up

Avoid applying during the transition period (when grass is coming out of dormancy), as turf is more sensitive at this stage. Applications during transition can cause temporary discoloration or slowed growth, though the grass typically recovers.

Can I apply Certainty Herbicide if my lawn is about to green up?

It’s best to avoid applying right before or during spring green-up. This transition period is when turfgrass is most sensitive.

If an application is necessary during this time:

  • Expect potential temporary yellowing or stunting
  • Ensure weeds are actively growing for best results

Whenever possible, wait until your lawn is either fully dormant or fully green to minimize stress and achieve the best outcome.

How long does it take for Certainty Herbicide to work?

Certainty Herbicide begins working quickly, but visible results take time:

  • Within 24 hours: Weed growth stops
  • Within 2–3 weeks: Yellowing or browning becomes visible
  • Full control: May take several weeks, depending on conditions

Performance depends heavily on the environment:

  • Faster results: Warm, moist conditions
  • Slower results: Cold or dry weather
  • Reduced effectiveness: Drought-stressed weeds

Even if you don’t see immediate changes, the product is actively working below the surface.

How do I mix Certainty Herbicide per gallon of water?

Certainty Herbicide uses a scoop-based measurement system, and the correct rate depends on:

  • The type of weed being treated
  • The type of turfgrass

Included scoop sizes:

  • Small scoop: 0.16 grams
  • Large scoop: 0.8 grams

Because application rates vary, always refer to the product label’s mix chart for precise instructions based on your specific weed and turf type. This ensures both effective control and turf safety.

When should I mow before or after applying Certainty Herbicide?

For best weed control results:

  • Do not mow for at least 2 days before application
  • Do not mow for at least 2 days after application

This allows the herbicide to fully absorb through the foliage and roots, maximizing effectiveness.

    Kills poa annua in centipede

    By Rich on 02/22/2015

    Verified Purchase

After fighting poa annua for the last few years it is good to find something that works. It seems expensive for such a small amount of product, but the amount used per gallon of water is so small it is cost effective. Works much better than the atrazine I used before. Great product and produced results in only 2 weeks.

    Quackgrass Dead On Arrival!

    By Ken on 05/26/2016

Used properly per instruction, quack grass started turning yellow on 3rd day, bright yellow by the 7 day, and wilting over 2 weeks out. Must use the Dyne Amic with this product. See my other review for (Drive) product. Newly planted Princess 77 lawn. Killed all the Quackgrass, the Bermuda kept smiling!

    Awesome

    By Jeff on 07/07/2015

I had a bad infestation on nutsedge and we were getting a lot of rain everyday decided to mix it up and give it a shot in front of the rain one day only three hours before receiving half an inch of rain but within 7 days the sedge is already 90% dead. Well worth the money

Worked! Killed Quack and Crab Grass Not Kentucky Bluegrass

    By Tracy on 06/18/2020

I was worried about using something this expensive and not knowing what I was doing. We also have Kentucky blue grass and I did not see that it was one of the approved grasses that it would not hurt. I used 5 small scoops for every two gallons and also used Surfactant and blue dye to make sure it was evenly sprayed. The First week or two I thought I had wasted my money. Nothing looked like it was going to die, and it stunted the growth of my whole lawn to the point that we only had to mow it after two weeks instead of one. I was worried it was going to kill my whole lawn. After about a month it noticed that the quack and crab grass was turning brown. It has now been a couple months and my normal grass is doing fine and I have a bunch of dead areas where all the quake/crab were really thick and I am putting down some extra seed to get something growing there. Hope this helps.

Sort Questions
Q
If I wanted to mix Certainty with other chemicals, what should my mixing rate be in gallons per acre?
A

Certainty Herbicide - 1.25 oz. is applied per acre with sufficient volume of water (10-50 gallons for ground equipment) to cover the acre (other mix rates listed on the label for smaller areas). The tank mixing instructions with other products can be found here.

Q
Will Certainty control POA in Carpetgrass? What post emergent herbicides are safe for carpetgrass and Bermuda?
A

Certainty Herbicide is not labeled for applications to carpetgrass so could injure it but is safe for bermuda.  We are unable to find a selective that can be used for poa annua safely in this turf.  You can use Dimension 2EW for pre emergent prevention of poa annua and spot treat actively growing poa with a non selective herbicide and reseed/sod the bermuda.

Q
Is anything labeled safe for killing globe sedge in Floratam St. Augustine?
A

You could use a product like Dismiss Turf Herbicide to kill sedge and other weeds in the area. The most effective sedge products kill the plant slowly, and can often take a repeat application after 6 weeks to see full control. Nutsedge spreads through nutlets and tubers below the ground, so often when you kill the top plant, some of the attached tubers a few inches over will sprout a new plant. This is what makes sedge so invasive and hard to eliminate.

Q
Can I spray Certainty safely on Zoysia that's just started to green up to kill annual blue grass?
A

Certainty Herbicide - 1.25 oz. is safe to apply on Zoysia but not if it is in a transitional state. You will want to wait till your lawn is fully green before applying any products on it or apply only as a spot treatment directly to weeds.

Q
How long do you have to wait before planting any edibles after spraying with Certainty??
A
Certainty Herbicide is not typically applied in areas where edible vegetation is planted since its an herbicide for lawns. If an area of of lawn where it was applied is being converted into a vegetable garden area in the ground, the manufacturer recommends waiting at least 1 year from the last application before planting.

Q
Can I tank mix Tenacity and Certainty together in the same tank sprayer for one application? If so, what would be the mixing rate for a 1000 sq ft lawn?
A

Unfortunately, there has not been any testing done by the manufacturer of Tenacity on the compatibility of tank mixing Tenacity Herbicide and Certainty Herbicide. We would suggest doing a small compatibility test in glass jar to see if the products separate or clump in any way. The Certainty Herbicide product label advises to add water to the tank ½ way then add the Certainty first and then the Tenacity, shake vigorously and fill the remaining way with water and shake again.

Q
What can I use to measure Certainty Herbicide if I don't have a measuring cup or scoop?
A

Certainty Herbicide can be used to measure with another larger utensil (dedicated for this use or disposable) if desired.

The application rate is 3 - 5 small scoops or 1 - 2 large scoops per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Depending on if you need to measure out the equivalent of small or large scoop for your application, the small scoop is equal to 0.16 grams and the large scoop is equal to 0.8 grams.

Q
Will Certainty harm the trees that are planted in my lawn?

I have crepe myrtles and maple trees planted in the lawn. They have 3 ft diameter mulched tree rings around the trucks. I have Bermuda grass.

A
The Certainty Herbicide - 1.25 oz. label indicates this can be applied around established woody ornamental plants as a directed spray. Neither crepe myrtle nor maple are listed as tolerant to over-the-top sprays, so be careful that you do not spray exposed roots or any green leafy tissue of those trees to prevent harm.

Q
What selective herbicide do you recommend for cool season (Central Ohio) Purple nutsedge?

Thank you.

A

While Certainty Herbicide - 1.25 oz.  cannot be applied to cool season lawns SedgeHammer + Herbicide provides selective post-emergent control of purple nutsedge, and can safely be applied to well established cool season turf grass types such as Kentucky Bluegrass, tall and fine fescue, and perennial ryegrass.  Sedgehammer + is considered one of the more "gentle to turfgrass", if used as directed on the manufacturer's product label.
