    I suspect that my bait station with Contrac is attracting racoons; will the Contrac kill a racoon?
    Bait stations are placed in the yard to deal with rats. Bait stations will be found 3 to 4 feet from where they were placed and bait is gone. I do not want to attract racoons or other critters. Should a different bait be considered or should I not bait the traps for some period of time?
    A
    The Contrac can kill a raccoon if it ate enough, but it would have to eat a large amount.  It doesn't sound like your stations are secure at all to the ground or to some other structure.  You can use liquid nails and affix the station on a 1 x 1 foot paver you can buy from home depot.  This well prevent them from being moved.  Also, if you make sure the bait is secured on the rods, and the station is secure, it should prevent the raccoons from being able to work the bait free from the rods.

    how much Contrac Blox Rodenticide will it take to kill a horse?
    We had our horses get into our shed and they eat a bucket of bait. there are 4 horses and we don't know how much bait was left.

    Generally speaking a horse would have to consume their body weight in Contrac blox for it to harm them. Please make sure to contact the manufacturer Bell Labs 800-323-6628 and the Horses Vet for follow up with the horses ingestion of Contrac Blox.

    I live in northern Ohio. Should I maintain baiting stations during winter?

    As rodent activity increases in the winter, we suggest that the Contrac bait be changed every 30 days to avoid the bait getting molded.

    How long is the potency of the Contrac if a mouse ate this bait that laid out for six months will it die?
    A
    Contrac bait should be stored at room temperature and replaced every 40-60 days in the bait stations because it contains food based ingredients. The bait could mold or sour in the hot or cold months (should be replaced every 30 days during the summer and winter) and may be less palatable to the mice. It should eradicate the mice if they consumed enough of the bait.

    When treating for rats outdoors, we always recommend that you use tamper resistant bait stations that will help stop accidental poisonings of non-target animals and children no matter which bait you select.  Please take a moment to read our article for baiting tips for rats. We would recommend to use Contrac blox which will kill the rats within 1-5 days after a single feed.

    Does Contrac give off any vapors when placed inside the home, and if so, are the harmful to humans?
    We placed 11 contrac blocks in the attic of our house to get rid of mice, and are concerned about possible effects of the vapors on us. We also placed several stations baited with Contac in the kitchen and basement. Is this safe for humans?
    A
    Contrac is a block rodenticide that does not release any vapors. If applied in tamper resistant bait stations it should pose no harm to humans if applied as directed.

    Is there any secondary poisoning of chickens for Contrac Blox if they consume the rodents feces?
    I raise chickens and I am concerned about the rat turds left behind that can be consumed by chickens? Are the turds harmful to chickens? Its not their favorite food, but I do think they eat them sometimes. On a side note, I have the UV Contrac and, although not the primary intention, you can use a UV light to tell if you got it off your hands completely. I had to wash my hands 3 times before it was completely gone.

    The chances of secondary poisoning by chickens consuming the feces left behind by rodents that consumed Contrac Blox is extremely slim. Normally animals have to consume multiple entire rodents in order to ingest enough poison to have any effects. Unless the chickens are getting direct access to the poison itself there should not be any issue if they consume a few pellets here and there.

    I have been using Contrac bait for some time. Do I need to change brands because they may get immune to it?

    You should rotate Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide every 4-6 months with a bait that has a different active ingredient to prevent resistance.  Fastrac or Final are great options.

    Will Contrac All-Weather Blox Rodenticide harm a wild animal that eats the poisoned rodent?
    A

    The risk of secondary poisoning with Contrac Blox is very minimal. A rodent only consumes a very small amount of bait at a time and passes it very quickly only keeping a smaller amount in their liver until they succumb to the effects of the bait. For expample, a cat would have to actually eat 20-30 mice that have consumed the bait for it to have an effect. In most cases well fed domesticated animals will not actually eat a mouse or a rat that they come across. Instead they will play with it, chew it and then leave it behind.

    The manufacturers have released newly labeled product as of June 4, 2011.  However, we still have the old labeled product until we sell out.

    If I put baits for mice to eat outside the house does that mean that they won't come inside the house and die?
    Or is there any other way to avoid them dying in the house?

    Unfortunately there is no way to stop the mice from going inside the house to die after they eat a mouse bait product. If having the mice enter your home after consuming the bait is an issue for you, consider using mouse glue traps placed in a Multi-catch Tin Cat mouse trap  or Mini T Rex Snap traps concealed in a Protecta Mouse Bait Station. This way you will know for sure where the mouse died and you can dispose of the carcass.

    Unfortunately contrac blox is only labeled for rodents.  Therefore we cannot recommend that it be used for ground squirrels.  We do not have any products that are labeled for squirrels specifically other than live catch traps.

    Should I consider switching the Contrac bait so that the mice don't get "bored" with the same one?

    There are some instances when rodents can be resistant to a certain active ingredient in a bait and there may be instances where the rodents will avoid the bait all together (bait is old or spoiled, too many alternate food sources are available). We recommend changing to a bait with a different active ingredient so that you will have fresh bait and you can avoid any issues with resistance.

    I need a good bait to control rats and mice. I also need something for spiders on my farm.
    I have been using a rat bait from Agway,and it is not doing what I want it too do. I am tired of the spiders in my shops and the basement of the house. I would like too try a good rodenticide. Any good recommendations?

    For a rodenticide, we would recommend Contrac Blox. It is a single feed kill. It comes in an 18 lb. pail. We would recommend putting these in rat bait stations, such as Protecta Rat Bait Stations. If you are in CA, we would recommend Fastrac Blox. Although they are not a single feed kill, they still will work wonderfully.

    For spiders, we would recommend using Bifen IT. This can be sprayed indoors and outdoors. It does have a residual of about 90 days indoors and 30 days outdoors. Indoors, it needs to be sprayed in the cracks and crevices and along the baseboards. Outdoors, this product can be used around the perimeter, in the lawn, on shrubs, trees and on flowers. This product should be used on edibles.

    Have squirrels in a wall-not sure of the entry point. How would I use this product to gt them to leave the wall?

    Will Contrac bait attract and kill moles?
    A

    We do not advise using Contrac Blox Rodenticide to treat for moles as it is not labeled to used for that treatment. Moles' primary food source is actually earthworms, and they stay underground to feed, so it is unlikely they would even consume a bait such as Contrac. Please refer to our guide on How to get rid of Moles to help further asisst you.

    Is it safe (within the label and the law) to place Contrac blox above a drop ceiling in a restaurant?
    Is it within the label and the law to pop a few ceiling tiles out of a drop ceiling in a restaurant and scatter a few blox around for rats? I am aware that I would have to deal with the odor. I have been told that the blox must be secured in a station of some sort but the label says nothing about that.

    By law Contrac Blox Rodenticide needs to be used inside a bait station, we would not recommend to toss loose blox in the drop ceiling. We would recommend using traps instead.
