About Flea Bombs

Flea bombs, or flea foggers, release the total amount of insecticide in the container at once, and are best used in small spaces. The fog released should fill the room and will kill any fleas that are exposed to the insecticide.

  • Flea bombs contain an insecticide, usually a pyrethrin or synthetic pyrethroid, an IGR (insect growth regulator) or both.
  • A flea fogger with an IGR will target juvenile fleas and prevent them from reproducing.
  • Without an IGR, the flea bomb will not control juvenile or flea eggs, and follow up control must be completed.
  • Flea foggers don’t do a great job of penetrating under furniture, into seams, folds, and cracks in furniture, or in floors and floor coverings.
  • Remember that when treating for fleas, your pets must be treated separately. This type of flea treatment is NOT for pets. If your pets have fleas, see our pet flea control page.

How To Use Flea Bombs

Flea bombs for homes are generally safe, but it is crucial to read the instructions carefully in order to safely and successfully use the flea bomb.

  • Food preparation surfaces and items (plates, silverware, etc) should be covered or removed if they will be exposed to the insecticide fog.
  • Bombs are best used in a small space, and a separate flea bomb should be used in each room to be treated.
  • People and pets should not be in the area during treatment, and the room should be well ventilated before re-entry.
  • Since flea bombs can’t always reach all the cracks, crevices, fabric folds, etc., where fleas tend to hide, and since foggers only affect the fleas that were exposed to the insecticide, it is very important to use an integrated approach to flea control, including vacuuming and IGR products. Our flea control page has instructions and products that you can use along side your flea bombing efforts.
