Dead Bugs, Happy Lawn, Happier Homeowner

    By Searider on 07/10/2020

Noticed the atypical brown patches starting in areas of my lawn and suspected I was dealing with white grubs, as I experienced the same issue last year which almost took out the entire half of my front lawn after using a different product with a different ingredient that didn't do diddly-squat against grubs, even though it stated on the label it killed them. Did some research and discovered that Imidacloprid is the most effective pesticide for eradicating these nasty little buggers. There was a disclaimer on this product's page that said it would take 5 days before it shipped but I didn't mind and placed my order. Surprisingly enough, I received an email from DMO later that day informing me my order had shipped! Happy day! Got my order in 2 days with no damage to the package. Products is fresh and bag is nicely sealed. The application directions on the back do not include every spreader but enough information is there for one to make an informed decision. For those interested: My front yard is about 5,500 sq ft. and I have a Scotts EdgeGuard Mini spreader. Based on the info provided on the bag, I decided to set my spreader to a happy medium of 3.5 and applied this product on a partly sunny day with temps in the low 80's after I mowed my grass. Product is small granules, very easy to apply, with no strong, obnoxious odor. My bag had no dust so stray particulate blowing in the wind (or my lungs) was not an issue. Had to wait until the next morning to water in due to water restrictions in my county but no harm was done to my grass in the meantime. Within a week, I noticed there were no more brown patches showing up in my lawn, even though I know Imidacloprid is a systemic and usually takes a few weeks to thoroughly move through a plant. Not complaining! As of today, my lawn is recovering nicely and I have this product to thank for putting a stop to those disgusting little grubs feasting on my grass.

    Systemic Insecticides treat larvae.

    By Anna on 06/02/2020

A powerful insecticide that needs to be treated with respect. It will kill almost any insect or larvae that munches on the treated plant. Especially useful for boring larvae that cannot be reached with sprays. Or for persistent insects like Lantern Flies or Japanese Beetles, where the option is frequent spraying. Just be sure to follow instructions to minimize harm to beneficial insects.

    Not for Elm Leaf Beetle

    By Kevin on 05/01/2020

"Treatment of Elm Leaf Beetle" is the inquiry to Google, and this product comes up. After purchase, and speaking to a DoItMyself representative who stated that he was not Google, it was determined that this is not a product for treatment of elm leaf beetle. A WASTE OF MONEY

Q
Is Imidacloprid 0.5G Insecticide effective in eliminating white grubs?

Trying to eliminate moles in our lawn/yard. Hoping eliminating grubs and other insects will stop moles from visiting our property.

A

Yes, Imidacloprid 0.5G is labeled for white grubs. Be sure to check if you really need to treat for grubs by doing an inspection for the number and placement in the soil. Moles’ primary food source is earthworms, so if you already have an issue with moles, we recommend treating them directly with bait or traps. Please refer to our guide How To Get Rid of Moles for more information on these options.

Q
Is Imidacloprid 0.5G Insecticide good for the weevils that attack agave?
A

Unfortunately, there are not any products that we are aware of that are labeled for agave snout weevils including Imidacloprid 0.5G Insecticide.  Your local cooperative extension office is a great resource in cases like these because they can give advice based on experience. Here is a link to the cooperative extension site. Just choose your state and then your county

Q
Can Imidacloprid 0.5G Insecticide be used to prevent insect damage on trees?

My hemlocks have wooly adelgids. Is there a dosing schedule for trees?

A

The Imidacloprid 0.5G would not be the appropriate product to use for treating trees with wooly adelgids. Dominion 2L would be a much more appropriate product for that application, and typically a systemic treatment is only done once a season/year. When using Dominion 2L as a soil drench for Hemlock Woolly Adelgids you should use 0.2 to 0.4 oz per inch of trunk diameter (D.B.H.) diluted in whatever water volume will provide adequate coverage and penetration into the soil and root zone for your sized tree. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per inch of trunk diameter but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake.
