Product Overview

The Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide is a broad-spectrum insecticide that is effective at killing many pests in the foliage and soil. Water, whether from rainfall or irrigation, causes the key ingredient of the product, Thiamethoxam, to be released from the granule. It is rapidly absorbed, once released by the affected plants and drawn into the soil. Once in the ground, the insecticide controls pests, either by killing them on contact or through ingestion of the active ingredient. It is also quickly absorbed by the plant's roots. The active ingredient moves through the plant to the site of infestation. Through eating the plant, the pests are affected by the thiamethoxam. The pests stop feeding within minutes to hours of ingestion and will be followed rapidly by the death of the pest. The persistence of the solution in the dirt of the area, as well as the plants, provides a long period of control of the population of the pests. Meridian 0.33G is not an egg killer or an IGR.

Broad-spectrum Insecticide

Meridian provides preventive and curative control of grubs, billbugs, and other foliar insect pests. Meridian will quickly control or prevent most pests that damage turf, trees, and shrubs and it fits the operational requirements of a lawn care operator because of a wide application window and relaxed water requirements. Meridian is quickly becoming a cornerstone in helping to keep customers’ lawns and landscapes healthy, green, and pest free.

Unique mode of action - Low rates - Excellent control

Meridian controls a wide variety of sucking and chewing pests at very low rates, both through contact and ingestion activity. Key chemical attributes make Meridian very effective in both foliar and soil applications. In foliar uses, Meridian dries quickly and is taken into the leaf, providing fast insect control. When applied to the soil, Meridian is absorbed and transported to the upper portions of the plant, while still remaining available for sub-surface control. This is due, in part, to its relative solubility, which allows the product to move through organic matter for very effective control of soil insects.

Wider application window with relaxed water requirements

Meridian offers the lawn care operator flexibility by widening the window of application, by providing season-long preventive control on their schedule. Immediate watering by your customers or Mother Nature is not required, as Meridian is effective even if there is no rain or irrigation for up to a week after application.

Broaden your spectrum and your efficacy

Meridian provides comprehensive control of both key foliar pests and soil pests like grubs and fire ants. In fact, you can achieve very effective fire ant control in just four to five days with a mound drench, compared to 60 days with the leading product. Meridian mixes well with other insecticides like Scimitar® CS to target a wider spectrum of foliar pests, including caterpillars, cutworms, and adult beetles.

Curative properties solve customer issues quickly

Meridian is labeled for curative control, and is effective through late second instar white grubs. Meridian insecticide’s outstanding water characteristics allow the product to quickly move into the soil profile. Outstanding uptake properties allow Meridian to travel within the plant more easily and over greater distance than other insecticides, giving you the versatility to also use the product to protect trees and shrubs from insect damage.

Powerful and versatile—yet gentle

While Meridian is highly effective on insects, it’s easy on plants. Studies have shown safety in trials where applications were up to four times the prescribed use rates. There is also versatility in the formulations, with both a 0.33G inert granular product and a 25WG (wettable granule) for spray applications.

Pests Application Timing Dosage of Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide

Larvae (white grubs) of: Aphodius species, Asiatic garden beetle, Billbugs (Sphenophorus species), Black turfgrass ataenius, European chafer, Green June beetle, Japanese beetle, May or June beetle (Phyllophaga species), Northern masked chafer, Oriental beetle, Southern masked chafer

Apply up to 45 days before the historical peak of adult flight to 2nd instar grub of the species being targeted. For optimum control, treat from peak flight to peak egg hatch. To control grubs, make the application from egg hatch to second instar (grubs less than half their full size). 7 - 9 lb. /5,000 sq. ft. or 60 - 80 Ib./Acre (1.5 to-2 bags/Acre) See table below for spreader calibrations settings
Craneflies (Tipula species) For optimum control, apply at oviposition (egg lay)
Mole crickets (suppression) (Scapteriscus species) To reduce mole cricket damage, treat from first egg hatch to peak egg hatch.
Chinch bugs (Blissus species) Apply when young nymphs are first observed.
Flea beetles Leafhoppers Greenbugs Sod webworms Spittlebugs For optimum control, make application when populations are first observed.
Ants (excluding Carpenter, Fire, Harvester, and Pharaoh ants) To control ants, treat when ant mounds are first observed. Green and tee surfaces: To achieve optimum control, treat the affected area plus a surrounding 30 foot buffer. Fairways and roughs: treat at least 1.5 times the infested area. Water in to adequately move active ingredient to target area. For additional knockdown activity, utilize with Scimitar® GC Insecticide in an insect control spray program. Consult the Scimitar GC Insecticide label for use.

For specific information about developmental stages of the target pest and optimal timing of applications, consult with your State Cooperative Extension Service.

Note: For turf with heavy thatch (more than 0.75”), use the higher rates within the specified rate range. Do not exceed 80 pounds of Meridian 0.33G per acre per year. Meridian 0.33G (is not phytotoxic) can be used on all major turfgrass species.

Note: Meridian 0.33G provides suppression of mole crickets on turfgrass. Suppression can mean either erratic control, ranging from good to poor, or a consistent level of control below that generally acceptable for commercial purposes. Refer to additional comments under Use Information section relating to turfgrass applications.

Q
Will Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide kill cicada killer wasps?
A

The Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide is a broad-spectrum insecticide that is effective at killing many pests in the foliage and soil. It is not specifically labeled for cicada killer wasps or wasps at all. Cicada Killer wasps thrive in disturbed environments, such as landscaped yards and places where bare soil is exposed. You can discourage the wasps from nesting in your yard by cutting your grass on the highest setting and by adding a thick layer of mulch to flower beds during the Cicada Killer Wasp season. These wasps do not like over saturated lawns either, so over watering during their season will help prevent them. Unfortunately, there is no fool proof way to prevent cicada killer wasps. For current infestations, you would need to use  Delta dust in each individual burrow. We also like to let our customers know that the Cicada Killer wasps are beneficial insects that provide free pest control for a couple months each year. Cicada killer wasps paralyze and provision their burrows with other insects to feed their young.  The beneficial Cicada killer wasps, while large and intimidating to see, are mostly harmless and there have been very few reports of anyone getting stung by just being near them. In most cases where a sting was reported, the wasps were being held or molested in some way.

Q
Can Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide be used in the rain?

I read the label and saw no rain restrictions. It it legal to apply this during the rain?

A

You should not apply Meridian 0.33 G Insecticide or any other insecticide during rain or other precipation. You cannot control when the rain stops, so you would likely have an uneven treatment and could potentially have a lot of runoff from your application, thereby wasting the product. Meridian G will need to be watered in after it is applied to activate the granules.
