Dear Debby, Phantom is made to have a very slow kill because it allows the insects that crawl over treated areas to pick it up on their bodies and return to the colony or nest. Then, through social interactions, the insecticide is spread to the other insects. It can take a few days to kill and will not kill immediately even if the insects are sprayed directly. Smushing the insects will defeat the purpose of using this product. You should choose Phantom for ants, roaches and other social insects. If you want a fast kill, you should choose a pyrethrin based product such as Microcare. That product will kill on contact but it does not leave behind a residual to keep killing after it has dried.
