    Q
Can you help me to choose between Sector and Riptide for use in Automatic Misting system?
I have a MistAway automatic misting system on my home and am trying to choose between using Riptide or Sector in it this season. I have no pets but do have two small children (who are not outside at misting times). I see that Sector has a residual. How long is the residual effect of Sector? It seems that Riptide is ~40% more expensive than Sector. What benefits am I getting for the higher price of Riptide? Is the higher price just because it is naturally based vs. man-made insectide?
    A

Riptide and Sector are our most popular products for use in automatic residential mosquito misting systems. The biggest difference is that Riptide has 5% all-natural pyrethrins, while the active ingredient in Sector is permethrin, a synthetic version of pyrethrin. Pyrethrin does have the advantage of being a natural active ingredient, and it offers the fastest knockdown of target insects. Riptide is also a water-based concentrate, so it does not contain the oils that permethrin products such as Sector will contain. The primary advantage of permethrin (Sector) is that it is less costly. Sector may give you residual of 1-2 days in areas without direct sunlight.

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR be used in an misting spray system in a horse barn?
We have a 55 gallon fly spray system set-up on a timer. Can this be used--if yes, how much would I need to fill the 55 gallon tank???
    A
Permethrin SFR is not labeled to be used from a misting system and it is not labeled to apply as a general space spray in a barn while animals are present.  However, we do carry a product made just for misting systems and for use specifically in barns.  Sector Misting concentrate comes in a 1/2 gallon jug and is meant to be poured directly into an automatic misting systems and can be applied over livestock.  It is labeled to kill all of the flies and other insects you would have in a stable/barn type setting.

    Q
Would Sector Misting Concentrate be more effective to treat mosquitoes than using the combination of Bifen IT, Exponent, and Nyguard?
    A

Sector Misting Concentrate works good on mosquitoes for a quick knockdown and does have a residual. With the active ingredients of 10% Permethrin and 10% PBO, it is most commonly usd in misting systems. Sector has 2 of the 3 products we recommend for mosquito control and works great for enclosed areas such as barns and stables.

For outside treatement in a yard, camping area, etc. the combination of Bifen IT, Exponent and Nyguard IGR will be more effective becasue you are using all 3 modes of action. Along with the synergist Exponent for a fast knockdown(24hrs), you have the 30 day residual of Bifen IT and the IGR to stop the development of juvenile stages of mosquitoes.

    Q
I have a 55 gal drum misting system in my horse barn. What is the difference in Riptide, Sector, and Pyranha?
What is the difference in effectiveness as far as killing flies?
    A

Pyranha 1-10 PX is a mosquito system that has the two active ingredient are permethrin and piperonyl butoxide. It should not be used in a propane or thermal fogger. There is no residual with this product.

Sector Mosquito Misting concentrate has the same active ingredients as Pyranha with the same amount of the active ingredient. It is a water based insecticide that can be used in automatic spraying systems, ULV foggers, mosquito misting systems, cattle barns, animal quarters, dairies, poultry houses, warehouses and more. Sector does have a residual effect.

Riptide is a water based misting concentrate with 5% pyrethrin. Riptide Waterbased Pyrethrin ULV is new technology that delivers effective control of a wide range of insects including mosquitoes, stored product pests, cockroaches, biting insects, crawling insects, flies and more without oil residues or oil-related issues. This product does not have any type of residual.

They will all be very effective in working to kill pests. If you are looking for a longer lasting product, we would recommend using Sector.

    Q
What is the best product to use in a 55 gallon drum misting system for outdoor control of mosquitoes in residential lawns?
I have a distributed misting system around my backyard that feeds off of a 55 gallon drum and regularly sprays an aerosolized mist for the purpose of repelling mosquitos. The mist will definitely be around ornamental plants and shrubs as well as trees. The schedule can be adjusted to spray once or twice a day and could be set up to avoid any people in the area, if necessary. What's the best product to use to eliminate mosquitos and other pests while being safe for repeated us and the people in the area?
    A

Sector Mosquito Misting Concentrate is a new water-based insecticide designed specifically for misting systems.  Sector provides quick knockdown, kill and residual control of flying insect pests including mosquitoes, flies and other insects. The recommended use rate is 1/2 gallon per 55 gallon drum.

    Q
What product do you recommend in a liquid concentrate for horses that can be diluted and sprayed directly onto them to repel buffalo, horse, march flies & mozzies?
    A

While many insecticides are in fact repellent to insects, most are not labeled to repel the insects away, they are labeled to kill the insects that come in contact with the application. Sector, Permethrin SFR, Tengard and Riptide are all labeled to be applied to horses and various other farm animals for a wide variety of insects. Please carefully read and follow the label instructions when making the application to the horses.

    Q
What do you recommend for spider Larinia Directa. I tried Sector and Pyranha with my mister system.
    A
Either of those products that you mentioned, the sector and the pyranha, should kill spiders if the spiders are in the area of a nozzle when the mister goes off.  Both of those products are very good, so we are not sure what else we could recommend other than applying a liquid insecticide directly from a one gallon hand pump sprayer instead of a misting concentrate.  This would probably be the best option.  Cy-Kick CS is a very good product for spiders and other insects and will last up to 60 days versus the misting concentrates that are only good when the mister goes off.

    Q
What would you recommend for moth control in a 30k sqft rug warehouse?
    A
We would recommend a combination of monitoring traps and a fogger such as Shockwave applied monthly. The Shockwave would help to control any existing pests with both a quick knockdown and an insect growth regulator to help stop reproducing and the traps would help you to know when a new population moves in.

    Q
What type if any respirator is required for application of Sector or Shockwave?
    A
According to the Shockwave label, it is recommended to wear a pesticide respirator jointly approved by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health under the provisions of 30 CFR Part II. Using the Comfo Classic Respirator Mask would be ideal for using a fogging concentrate.

    Q
Can Sector Misting Concentrate and Bifen XTS be mixed together?
    A

We would not recommend mixing Sector Misting Concentrate and Bifen XTS since both of these products contain synthetic pyrethroids (similar active ingredients). Also, Sector is primarily applied with fogging or misting equipment, while Bifen XTS cannot be applied in automatic misting machines or fogging machines. If you would like to give us more information about your situation, such as where you are treating and for what pest, then we would be happy to offer further recommendations for you. Q
Is Sector Misting Concentrate safe to use while the horses and barn cats are in the barn?
I have a fly misting system in the barn and need to know if it's safe for animals?
    A

Sector Misting Concentrate can be used while horses are in the barn but it would be recommended to keep cats out during treatment until the area has dried or product has dissipated.  If cats cannot be kept from the area during this time a better option would be an all natural product like Naprovit Plus.

  • Asked by Catheen from Houston, Tx

    Q
Can Sector be used in blower sprayer?
We are thinking about buying a blower sprayer to use periodically to control mosquitos in our yard and patio area as we have found misting systems ineffective. What is the best product to use for that that is safe and effective?
    A

Sector Misting Concentrate could only be used a surface spray in a mist blower for mosquitos outside but will only kill the ones that you make direct contact with.  It will not leave any residual that will continue to kill once dry.  For more long term control a product like Talstar P would be more effective.  It will continue to kill up to 30 days outside.  The key is to apply to the underside of the leaves where the adults lay during the day.
