    Q
I've used SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide & Glyphosate to treat nutsedge in bare dirt areas as well as digging the nutsedge up several times over the last 12 months with little results.
Applied exactly as directed per the product label and the nutsedge continues to grow.
    A

Depending on how established the nutsedge is, it can take multiple applications to kill the actual nutlets, even when using an effective product like SedgeHammer + Herbicide.  Ideally, the nutsege that will emerge in the upcoming growing season will be easier to control, because of the treatments you have applied in the last 12 months.  Sometimes, it can take multiple growing seasons to eradicate a well established series of weeds from an area, even using the most effective of product.

Please view our Nutsedge Treatmet Guide for more information.

    Q
Can SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide be used to treat weeds in a mulch ring around oak trees without absorbing into the roots of the oak trees?
    A

SedgeHammer Herbicide should not be applied around groundcovers, ornamentals, vegetables, shrubs, trees, or flowers. It is to be applied to turf areas only.

For treating weeds under the canopy of desriable trees, bushes, shrubs, etc – it is recommended to spot treat weeds with a non selective herbicide like Roundup QuickPro as this will not leach into the soil or to nearby root systems. View the full product label for more information.

    Q
Will SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide kill woodsorrel in St. Augustine?
    A

Sedgehammer + Herbicide is only labeled to control Purple Nutsedge, Yellow Nutsedge, and Kyllinga and would not control woodsorrel.

For woodsorrel in St. Augustine lawns, Hi-Yield Atrazine Weed Killer or Fertilome Weed Free Zone would be a better option.

    • Please note, Fertilome Weed Free Zone is not recommend to be used on Floratam or Bitterblue varieties of St Augustine unless discoloration and temporary injury can be tolerated. Other species of St Augustine would be safe if used at labeled rates.
View our Woodsorrel (Oxalis) Guide for more information.

Applying a pre emergent such as Pendulum 2G in early Spring and late Fall is recommended to prevent weeds from germinating. This will help cut back on the amount of post emergent applications during the actively growing season. View our Warm Season Lawn Care Schedule for more information.

    Q
How far from a tree can I apply Sledgehammer Herbicide?
    A

The manufacturer of SedgeHammer + Herbicide states on the product label not apply this product around desirable flowers, ornamentals, vegetables, shrubs or trees.  In order not to prevent damage to any desirable vegetation, including trees and shrubs, you should keep you application well outside the drip lines and root zones of trees, and avoid any drift from contacting ornamentals or edible vegetation.

SedgeHammer + Herbicide is safe on certain grasses. We would need to know what kind of grass you're spraying on to better answer this question.

    Q
Can SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide be sprayed on nutsedge when the ground temperatures are at 84 degrees?
    A

Yes, SedgeHammer Herbicide can be applied when soil temps are above 55 degrees and weeds are actively growing.

To prevent burning or injury to the lawn, do not apply when air temperatures are above 85 degrees. During hotter months, applying in the early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are at the coolest for the day are recommended.

    Q
Can you use a weed wiper instead of a sprayer with SedgeHammer?
I have a sponge weed wiper and would like to wipe colonies of nutsedge instead of spraying them to avoid damage to the cedar tree the colonies are flourishing under. Will wiping work as well as spraying?
    A
While the Sedgehammer + Herbicide is designed to be mixed with water and sprayed on the nutsedge to get complete coverage of the plant, if the wipe on method is the only option due to the sensitivity of the surrounding vegetation, you can use that method. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you would want to try to get as much coverage with the sponge on the leaf surfaces as you can, and any mixed solution you have left over would need to be disposed of as mixtures are only good for about 24-48 hours before they start to break down in the tank.

    Q
Can other herbicides be applied within days of the Sedgehammer application? Specifically Quin Way 75D
I'm trying to treat multiple types of weeds throughout my lawn, but I'm unsure of the best way to figure out a treatment program that will not harm the fescue grass. Thank you in advance for any information that can provide.
    A
We do not recommend mixing SedgeHammer + Herbicide with a quinclorac product at the same time since a quinclorac product usually requires the use of a methylated seed oil surfactant. If you are needing to apply both products, then you may want to wait about a week between applications so that you are not putting too much stress on your fescue, especially in the summer when it's hot. Keep in mind that you should not mow within 2 days of either herbicide application.

    Q
After applying treatment, and the area starts to turn brown, then what?
    A
After the application of SedgeHammer + Herbicide you do not want to rake or pull the dead nutsedge out. If the plant is pulled it will just split off the rhizome and more new plants will grow from the nutlets left in the soil.

    Q
    Max Square Feet Per Packet
I purchased a couple packets of Sedgehammer + to treat my front and back yards that are infested with it this year. My front is 1k square feet, my back about 500 square feet. Would one packet be effective covering all 1500 square feet if I dissolve it in a bit more water or should I use one packet for the front and another for the back? If one packet per section, any advice on how to dispose of the excess I'd have left from the back yards application?
    A
SedgeHammer + Herbicide packets are designed to cover 1000 sq ft.

    Q
My Kentucky Bluegrass lawn is dead in areas after applying SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide, did I apply too much?
    A

SedgeHammer Plus Herbicide should not injure turfgrasses as long as the lawn is established and sufficient water volume of atleast 1 gallon of water was used to apply 13.5g evenly over a 1000 sq ft area. Applications should be avoided during the heat of the day (65-85 degrees) and recommended to be done in the early morning or late afternoon/evening when temps are at their coolest.

If the turfgrass is under stress from heat, drought, diseases, insects, etc – these are all factors that can cause herbicides to injure turfgrasses.

  • Asked by Steven from Covington, La

    Q
Can Sedgehammer be used in a garden with potatoes?
    A

SedgeHammer may not be the best option for you.  It is meant more for nutsedge control in turf grass and it cannot be used in or around a vegetable garden or anything edible. It remains in the soil for up to 3 years so the manufacturer recommends that you not plant anything edible in an area where SedgeHammer has been applied for at least 3 years.  For nutsedge control in or around a vegetable garden, it is recommended to spot-treat the sedge with a glyphosate or RoundUp-type product directly.  With this type of product, it is only necessary to wait 2-3 weeks after application to plant vegetables or anything else.  We would recommend Roundup QuickPro 1.5 oz. packs for ease of use.

Also, you should not just pull the plants. This will just split off the rhizome and more new plants will grow from the nutlets left in the soil. To completely remove the plants, you would need to completely dig out the nutlets so that new plants do not grow from them. Many folks will still till the soil after using RoundUp to be sure there are no remaining nutlets that will grow new plants.
