Soil Amendments for Edible Gardens

Soil amendments can include organic materials (materials from once-living organisms) like sphagnum peat, wood chips, grass clippings, straw, manure, compost, sawdust, and wood ash. Inorganic soil amendments, which are manmade or mined, include vermiculite, perlite, pea gravel, and sand These soil amendments are focused on the structure of your soil, including drainage, moisture retention, and the ability to support plants and foster root growth. Other amendments focus on adding an ingredient to improve the pH of the soil, like adding aluminum sulfate or lime.

Choose a product that will best fix the aspects of your soil you want to change. Decide what your soil needs first, and then search for the best match. Always read the label to make sure the product can be used on edible plants.
