It’s important to not only focus on the nutrients your plants need, but the airflow, water content, drainage capabilities, and supportive structure of the soil itself.
What you choose to add to the soil of your ornamentals depends on what aspects you need to change. Organic soil amendments, or those products derived from once-living organisms, include sphagnum peat, wood chips, grass clippings, straw, compost, manure, biosolids, sawdust, and wood ash. Inorganic soil amendments, which are manmade or mined, include vermiculite, perlite, pea gravel, and sand. You can find most of these products as certified organic or natural, and many will be suitable for use in organic gardens.
