    Q
What is an herbicide that will kill and and keep plants dead for a long time?
I am looking for the best soil sterilizer that is legal in California and will kill just about anything.
    A

TVC Total Vegetation Control is a great soil sterilizer that can be shipped to California. It will prevent any plant growth in areas where it is applied for at least 1 year. Just be sure not to apply in a way that would run off or contact the roots of desirable plants.  If you have existing plants in the areas, then you can use RoundUp QuikPro to mix in for a faster burn down.  You will want to use a Non Ionic Surfactant as well to increase effectiveness.  You will use anywhere between 2-6 pints of TVC per acre (0.72 oz -2.18 oz per 1000 sq/ft) in no less than 2 gallons of water per 1000 sq/ft.

    Q
Can I use a post emergent with TVC Total Vegetation Control?
    A

TVC Total Vegetation Control works as both a pre and post emergent. There would be no need to incorporate another post emergent. We would recommend to mix in a surfactant like Southern Ag Non Ionic Surfactant to help the product stick better.

    Q
What is a good pre-emergent spray for preventing weed growth in gravel driveways, patios and walkways?
I have around 4000 sq of gravel driveways, patios and walkways. You have a bewildering range of pre emergent products. Adjacent to these areas are fruit trees and blackberry bushes. I also have pasture areas with horses and cows adjacent to these areas. One corner of one pasture, about 500 sq, has thistles and some other pickly weed that I have not been able to identify. Any suggestions
    A

The best and longest-lasting pre-emergent herbicide to use around areas like gravel and patios where you do not want any plants to grow would be a vegetation management product like Martin's TVC Total Vegetation Management. This product will prevent any plant growth in those areas for up to 1 year. Just be sure not to apply in a way that would run off or contact the roots of desirable plants since this product last for so long. If you have existing plants in the gravel areas, then you can use RoundUp QuikPro to spot treat and kill any existing plants.

Keep in mind that many regular pre-emergent herbicides made for turf and/or ornamental areas have a temporary dye in the product to act as an indicator. You would want to be very careful with these products around concrete or other porous surfaces, since they could stain those surfaces. Either Dimension 2EW or Gallery 75DF can be used on basically any type of turf and would not stain concrete or gravel. These would offer 3-6 months of pre-emergent control of listed weeds.

To kill vines and brush in the pasture area, I would recommend Hi-Yield Range and Pasture Triclopyr 4. This product is safe to use in grazing areas and on many types of turf. The active ingredient is excellent for most vines, brush, stump treatments, etc. You would want to avoid spraying desirable plants like any shrubs or fruit trees, and you should not apply herbicides like this within the drip line of plants that produce edibles such as the fruit trees. You can view our other Range and Pasture Products here.

    Q
Would TVC work to kill Johnson Grass in hay field by spot spraying?
Would be doing the spraying in the fall, and cutting the hay next summer.
    A

TVC Total Vegetation Control is not labeled for use in pastures.  Pastora would be a better option for this area and is labeled for johnsongrass when used as directed on the product label.

    Q
What can I use to kill all weeds, grass, trees, brush no matter the size with no re-growth?
I want to spray the product all at one time - 4 acres.
    A

You can use TVC Total Vegetation Control  to help rid of your grassy weeds and your broadleafs. It works by translocating through stems and leaves and destroying the plant root. TVC gives you season long control over undesirable vegetation such as annual and perennial weeds, woody brush, and trees. You can use Roundup quick pro to mix with it for a faster kill of already growing well established plants. TVC will prevent new growth for up to one year.

  • Asked by Bob from Vineland, Nj
    05/10/2016
    Q
Is there a weed killer and something to prevent new growth in one product?
I've used 41% Glyphosate products before- And my question is this. I live in a mobile home in NJ where I'm surrounded by trees and woods. I use a 41% Glyphosate to kill existing weeds as my yard is 99% weeds. I need a product that stands up to a lot of rain as NJ gets about 50" a year. Plus a product that will STOP new growth. I'm older and cannot be outside doing tons of yard work for extended periods. I use your Bifen TS or Talstar P for pest control with generally good results, but need some help with weed control and something to stop re-growth.
    A

Glyphosate products will only kill existing plants that are contacted with the spray; it will not persist in the soil or prevent and new plant growth. For a pre-emergent herbicide, we would need to know some more information, such as what, specifically, you are trying to keep from growing, if there are any desirable plants or turf and, if so, what kind, and how much area you may need to treat. If you are looking for a bare-ground herbicide to kill and prevent any plants at all from growing, then a popular choice is TVC Total Vegetation Control. This herbicide stays in the soil for about a year, preventing anything from growing in the treated area. You must be careful not to apply TVC within the drip line or near the root system of any desirable trees, grass, or other plants. Please see the product label for complete instructions.

If you have a lot of existing plants, then you may want to apply glyphosate anyway for faster kill.

    Q
What is the best product to use over landscape rocks to keep grass and weeds away?
What do you recommend to keep grass and weeds away...I live in the Phoenix Desert area and I want to reduce grass and weed growth under landscaping Rock.....no plants to worry about killing. Need the best ground clear product?
    A

Using a vegetation management product like TVC or Pramitol would be best.  They will kill and prevent anything from growing in the area up to 1 year.  Be aware they should not be applied inside the dripline of any desirable plants and trees as they can kill these if the roots absorb the product.

  • Asked by Cindy from Spartanburg, Sc
    03/08/2016
    Q
How close to the grass on either side of my gravel driveway can I spray TVC and not harm the grass?
    A

There reallly is not a set footage that we can advise on how far to apply the TVC from desirable grasses as it depends on the root systems of the grass which will vary with the type of grass.  With trees it would be at least 10 feet away when using most vegetation management products, but being grass, they have shorter roots.  It might be safe to say 1-2 feet but there is no concrete answer that we provide.  If in doubt, it would be best to use just a pre-emergent herbicide that would not effect the roots of desirable vegetation. Keep in mind that soil and, therefore, the active ingredient, will have more movement if the application area is on a slope.

    Q
Is it safe to use a sprayer for other products after using TVC?
I live in the country and have had problems with Bermuda grass in my gravel driveway. I have been having to spray with Roundup once every 2 weeks to prevent it from being taken over. Is this the best option? If I do use TVC I intend to borrow my parents sprayer that is normally used around flower beds. If washed out well can the sprayer still be used in and around flower beds after being used to spray TVC?
    A

Yes, you can use the same sprayer that has been used around flower beds as long as it is thoroughly cleaned and flushed with warm water and a cleaning agent. We recommend doing this a couple times to ensure that all the remaining product has been thoroughly cleaned out. Using a tank cleaner such as Spray Tank Cleaner & Neutralizer is a great way to ensure there is no residue left behind.

You can also choose to use a dedicated sprayer for non-selective herbicides to reduce the risk of damaging desirable plants.

  • Asked by Mark from Mesa

    Q
Trying to switch lawn from bermuda grass to desert landscaping. Would this product be a good choice?
After grass is gone and rock is down we will be planting desert flora and do not want it damaged.
    A
TVC is going to be a soil sterilizer which means it not only will kill anything growing that you spray it on (including your bermuda you want to get rid of) but it also creates a barrier in the soil preventing any new growth of plants in the soil as well including desert flora. If you are looking for long term grass and weed control in the areas around where you plan to plant the desert flora, i would suggest using something like RoundUP first to kill out all the grass currently there, and then within a week or two the roundup residual in the soil will be gone and you can plant the desert flora. Once its in place and you know where the rock will be put, you can spray the rock areas being sure to give at least a 5 foot barrier between where you spray the TVC and the desert flora to prevent weed/grass growth on a more long term basis.

  • Asked by Deanna from Tully
    10/22/2014
    Q
How long before the weeds die when using TVC Total Vegetation Control?
I applied TVC with a surfactant 6 days ago and I see no difference yet. They were short common lawn weeds along side my garage, which I cut down to under 2" first.
    A
TVC Total Vegetation Control can take up to a couple weeks to see results. The label recommends that you allow sufficient time for the grasses/weeds to recover after mowing before applying TVC Total Vegetation Control, meaning they work better at a longer height.  TVC is a systemic herbicide and works by translocating through stems and leaves and destroying the plant root, so the longer the leaves and stems, the more quickly it will be absorbed. We recommend letting the weeds grow to a longer height and reapplying TVC Total Vegetation Control at the proper mixing ratio according the product label.

  • Asked by Ann from North, South Carolina
    08/15/2014
    Q
Do you have a feed and weed killer that will kill briars?
    A
Usig TVC Total Vegetation Control will give you season long control over undesirable vegetation such as annual and perennial weeds, woody brush, and trees. Using a Non-Ionic Surfactant to help the chemical adhere to the briars and absorb more quickly will improve your results. Mixing at a rate from .6 fl oz to 6.4 fl oz per gallon of water, moisten but DO NOT drench target vegetation. DO NOT spray to the point of run off. Please follow label instructions and let us know if you have any further questions.
