    Q
Can Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer be applied before my irrigation sprinklers turn on?
My irrigation sprinklers start in mid April. However, I have some crabgrass (from last summer) that is starting to grow again as spring quickly approaches. Can I apply this product right away or do I need to wait for the irrigation to be turned on by the utility company? Thanks!
    A

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer can be used anytime weeds are actively growing when outside temps are between 65-85 degrees. Per the product label, if soil moisture is not suffiecient prior to the application, irrigation can improve weed control. Do not water or irrigate for 24 hours after the application. If rainfall does not occur within 2-7 days of the application, irrigating with atleast ½ inch of water is recommended.

    Q
13 hrs after applying Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer, an unexpected rain shower hit our area. Should I do a follow up application or wait the recommended 14-21 days?
    A

Unfortunately since we do not now the severity of the rainfall, we would recommend waiting 14 days before reapplying Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer. This will ensure that the ground is not waterlogged and your grass does not have any stress from the initial application.

    Q
Is Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer labeled to kill dallisgrass?
    A

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is not labeled to control dallisgrass. Unfortunately, there are very few selective herbicides to control existing dallisgrass. Since these plants can have strong roots and may survive mild winters.

Spot treatments with a non selective glyphosate product such as Roundup QuickPRO may provide some knockdown of actively growing daillisgrass otherwise, you may need to dig out the individual clumps.

We recommend using a pre-emergent such as Dimension 2EW to prevent new dallisgrass in the spring.

    Q
How much Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer would be used in 25 gallon ATV boom sprayer and how much area will that cover?
I think the flow rate is 1.5 gpm
    A

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is applied at the rate of 1.45 fl oz per 1 gallon of water per 1000 sq ft. A MSO Surfactant such as Duo Stick should also be tank mixed at 0.16 to 0.48 fl oz per gallon of water for best results on weed control.

If using a 25 gallon sprayer, you will use 36.25 fl oz of Drive XLR8 + 4 fl oz to 12 fl oz Duo Stick to cover 25k sq ft.

Be sure to review the product labels for each product for more information.

    Q
Will Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer Kill sandburs?
    A

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is not labeled to kill sandburs. There are only a few post emergents labeled for them such as Image Kills Nutsedge Concentrate & Hi-Yield Atrazine Weed Killer.

Sandburs are best controlled with pre emergent applications in late fall and early spring prior to weed germination. Pendulum 2G Granular Herbicide and Ike's Sandbur and Crabgrass Preventer are both labeled for pre emergent control of sandbur.

Crabgrass is taken over the mulched areas in between my newly planted Holly trees can I use this product without harming them
    A
No, you cannot apply Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer around your holly trees or other desirable ornamental plants such as shrubs, flowers, or trees since it could damage or kill them. You could use a grass killer such as Ferti-lome Over-the-Top II Grass Killer, which is labeled for use over the top of many kinds of holly plants.

    Q
Can Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer be applied to a recently (2 months) seeded and strawed tall fescue lawn?
Tall fescue planted and not thriving in many areas of the 1 acre lot
    A

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer should only be applied to fully established turf grass, and used as directed on the manufacturer's product label. Generally, a lawn is considered to be fully established after it has been mowed at least three times.

If you have not had a soil analysis done on the lawn, we would recommended doing one to determine what nutrients your lawn has or may need. This can help with establishing new turfgrass and overall lawn health.

Please view our Soil Test Kits or contact your County Extension Office for assistance with a soil analysis.

  • Asked by David from Fort Collins, Co
    06/29/2022
    Q
After an application, when is it safe to again use grass clippings as a mulch?
The manufacturer says "Do not use clippings as mulch or compost around flowers, ornamentals, trees, or in vegetable gardens" After an application, when is it safe to again use grass clippings as a mulch?
    A
When using Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer the active ingredient quinclorac has dissipation values that can range from 60 to over 500 days. Because quinclorac does not bind well to soil, some dissipation noted in field testing could be due to chemical testing. The persistence hazard of quinclorac is rated high (likely to take over 60 days to degrade to half of the applied concentration). We would recommend waiting an entire season before using any grass clippings as mulch.

    Q
Is a flat or cone spray pattern better when applying Drive XLR8?
    A
You could use either a fan spray or cone spray when using an herbicide such as Drive XLR8. You may consider adding a spray indicator dye such as Turf Mark Blue to make sure you are getting good coverage and not over-applying your herbicides.

  • Asked by Dan from Muskegon, Michigan

    Q
If it briefly rained within a couple hours of applying Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer, do I need to reapply?
I live in Western Michigan and did a spot application for crabgrass but did not use a surfactant.
    A

Drive XLR8 is rain fast within just an hour or so, so if you had several hours between application and when the rain occurred you should be good to go without need for reapplication. You will however need a surfactant mixed in if you want to see control over the crabgrass, so on your follow up applications you need to add about 2 tsp of a MSO type surfactant, such as Duo Stick.
