  • Asked by Tony from Canton Ma

    Q
If no rain is coming, when should I irrigate after spreading milky spore?
I line in MASS. I am planning to aerate and spread milky spore (granular) on my lawn. We have been getting rain but its now not supposed to rain heavy/steady for a couple of weeks. Once I lay spore down and our irrigation system is turned on again how long should i water spore in? Also is there a chance milky spore could burn green grass?
    A

You can wait 36 to 48 hours before watering in the Milky Spore Powder. Make sure you water the Spore before raking or mowing your lawn. The whole idea is to soak the Spore into the soil where it will become available to grubs feeding on the roots of grass. Simply use an oscillating hose sprayer for 15 to 20 minutes over the entire treated area. There may still be some white residue but this is chalk used as carrier for the spores.  The Milky Spore Powder will not harm your grass.

  • Asked by Patti from Ocala, Fl

    Q
Will Milky Spore application deter the moles soon after its' application?
I live in zone 8b. My lawn is invaded with moles. I am told grubs are the moles' food source so get rid of the grubs first.
    A

Milky Spore Powder can take a few years to establish completely for the elimination of Japanese beetle grubs. Please keep in mind that this product is not registered for use in Florida. We have other options for Grub Treatment here.

We always recommend to treat the mole infestation directly if you are dealing with this pest. While moles may consume grubs and other insects, their primary food source is earthworms, which you cannot expect to manage. Our most popular product for moles is Talpirid Mole Bait. You can see more tips and product recommendations in our online Mole Treatment Guide here.

    Q
At what rate should a drop spreader be set for Milky Spore Powder?
    I understand it takes 40oz/10,000sq-ft.
    A

Milky Spore Powder is a powder not designed to be applied with a drop spreader.  The manufacturer has designed a very convenient Dispenser to apply the powder. You would simply pour the Milky Spore Powder into the Dispenser Tube, break open the seal at the bottom of the tube and apply the Milky Spore Powder in a spot application: one teaspoon of powder every four feet in rows four feet apart to achieve a checkerboard pattern of spots throughout the treated area. Once you have completed the application, you should water in the powder in all of the treated area for about 15 minutes. Only one application is required, but may take one to four years to gain optimum control.

  • Asked by Cathy from Mt. Holly, Nc
    09/06/2017
    Q
How soon can you till up your garden after applying Milky Spore Powder?
Is there a recommended waiting time?
    A

At this time of the year the eggs are hatching and the grubs are rapidly feeding and growing before they head deeper into the soil during the winter months.  The Milky Spore Powder will only affect the grubs so there is no waiting period after applying the product.  It is important that the product is in the soil while they are rapidly feeding. If you are going to be removing any soil, then it would be best to do those renovations first, and then apply the Milky Spore after so that you are not removing or disturbing the barrier.

  • Asked by Kathy from Lathrop, Mo
    04/17/2018
    Q
Is it safe for a dog to return to an area where I applied Milky Spore Powder and it rained and snowed some, but I can still see white pellets?
    A

Milky Spore is an all-natural product that will not harm dogs or other non-target animals. However, if you can still see powder on the surface, then you want to activate the product into the soil with additional irrigation. Milky Spore is best applied when temperatures are above freezing, the ground is not frozen, and there is no snow or ice on the area you are treating.

    Q
When using the Milky Spore powder does it need to be watered into the ground?
I have read to not apply it if it will rain in 48 hours and other comments state that it should be watered after application. I have a puppy and children and want to make this safe for them to enter the yard.
    A

Milky Spore Powder is not a chemical, therefore is completely safe for your pets and children to be around after applying it.  Once you have completed the application, you should water in the powder in all of the treated areas for about 15 minutes so that it can fully absorb into the soil.

  • Asked by Jenn from Indiana

    Q
When do I apply Milky Spore Powder? What can I kill the bugs with because they are destroying my hibiscus.
Its eating the flower blooms off my hardy Hibiscus. What can I kill them with ? NEEM Oil does not work . They are hard to get off and they they come right back to the flowers . Please Help !
    A

Milky Spore Powder should be applied 3 times per year.  The manufacturer recommends applying around Labor Day, Memorial Day, and July 4th just to make it easy to remember when to apply.  However, this product can be applied at any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen.  Keep in mind that Milky Spore Powder will treat Japanese beetle grubs only.  It is a good idea to get an identification of the pest you need to treat so that you can be sure you are choosing the best product for your needs.

    Q
Will Milky Spore Powder kill mole crickets?
    A

No, Milky Spore Powder is only labeled for Japanese Beetle Larvae (grubs).

A good option for mole crickets is Talstar Xtra Granules. This can be broadcast across your lawn and watered in after application. This will last for 2-3 months in the soil. The rate is 2.3-4.6 lbs of product per 1000 square feet.
