Types And Uses Of Natural Insecticide Dusts
Dusts are perfect for crack and crevice treatments, because the dust can coat all surfaces that sprays or other products couldn’t reach. Most dust products are active for months if left dry and sheltered from elements, but others are formulated for outdoor use. Most natural dust products contain boric acid or diatomaceous earth, but others can contain pyrethrins, a botanically derived pesticide ingredient. Dust products usually work on a very wide variety of crawling insects. The following are descriptions of various types of natural dust products.
Diatomaceous earth is a widely used product, not limited to pest control. This product is made up of the fossilized bodies of prehistoric organisms. The sharp edges abrade the waxy coating of an insect’s body, causing them to become dehydrated and die. It is completely natural and is perfect as a natural ant killer.
Boric acid is derived from the mineral boron, and acts as a stomach poison when ingested by insects. This product remains effective as long as it is dry, but shouldn’t be applied in food prep areas except in cracks and crevices, under or behind appliances, etc. This is an excellent natural roach killer and ant killer and can be found in Borid Boric Acid Dust.
Pyrethrins are compounds derived from a certain type of chrysanthemum that is often replicated synthetically and widely used in all types of pest control applications. You can find pyrethrins in Eco PCO D-X and Evergreen Pyrethrum Dust.
It can be difficult to apply most of these dusts outdoors, since the rain and elements will make them less effective. There are now microbial insecticides, like spinosad, that essentially poisons insects when ingested and is perfect for vegetable gardens. You can find this in Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew Flower and Vegetable Garden Dust
