How does Optigard Flex work?

Thiamethoxam, the active ingredient, is a non repellent insecticide. Non-repellent means that target insects don't sense that the product is there and will crawl right through it, picking it up on their bodies. Optigard FLEX is especially effective on social insects like ants. Because of the delayed reaction of Thiamethoxam these insects will be able to return to their nesting site and transfer the insecticide to other members of their colony through normal social interactions, eventually eliminating the entire colony.

How do I use Optigard FLEX to treat my home ?

To use as a perimeter spray and a crack and crevice treament outside:

  • Mix 1/2 oz of Optigard FLEX with one gallon of water in a hand pump sprayer.
  • Spray a 3 ft wide band around the base of your home.
  • Spray a 2 ft wide band on the ground around the base of your home.
  • Spray around all door frames and window frames.
  • Spot treat any insect points of entry such as around pipes or cables, soffits, eaves, attic vents, and weep or ventilation holes.

To use as a crack and crevice or spot treament inside your home:

  • Mix 1/2 oz of Optigard FLEX with one gallon of water in a hand pump sprayer.
  • Spray on baseboards around home.
  • Spray all door frames and window frames.

Q
Does Optigard Flex Liquid work on wasps?

I noticed your website list of insects did not include wasps, but a wasp control website says this is the best non-repelent to use for them. Any thoughts/ideas on this?

A

Optigard Flex Liquid is labeled for yellow jackets and wasps.  On our website list there is  *See label for complete list, of which the wasps and yellowjects are in included there.  When treating for wasps and yellow jackets you will be treating their nests directly.

Q
Your Q&A for Termidor says it only lasts 6 weeks on wood - How long does Optigard Flex last?
A
When using Termidor to treat for termites it is meant to go in the ground.  It is not a wood treatment product.  Optigard Flex is an insecticide meant for indoor and outdoor perimeter treatments.  It is also not a wood treatment product.  You would not want to use Optigard Flex for termite or beetle control in wood.  You would want to use a wood treatment product like Bora-Care which stays in the wood forever and is meant to be applied on only wood.  It depends on what you are trying to control as to what product would be best for your needs.

Q
Is Optigard Flex Liquid effective against argentinian ants?
A
Optigard Flex Liquid is a fairly new product and we have not had any feedback on it specific to Argentinian Ants. Optigard Flex is labeled for ants and it is non-repellent and has a transfer effect, which makes it a top choice for social insects such as ants.

Q
Why isn't Optigard Flex labeled for pharoah or carpenter ants?

If it works well for other ants why not them?

A
Some ants act differently than other ant species which could limit the way the product would spread through the colony. Manufacturers will only include an insect on their product label if it meets certain criteria and for some reason they felt the product was not effective enough on Pharoah and carpenter ants. If you need more specific information as to why they were not included you can contact Syngenta, the manufacturer, directly by calling 866-796-4368.
