Selective Pre Emergent Herbicides

Prevent weeds from growing in your lawn with a selective pre-emergent herbicide. Selective pre-emergent herbicides are applied to lawns before weeds appear, preventing weeds from germinating and emerging. Selective pre-emergent herbicides target certain weeds and do not prevent all weeds, so be sure to read product labels to find an herbicide for the weed or weeds you are trying to stop.

A specially formulated pre-and early post-emergent herbicide that provides broad-spectrum control on tough weeds and aquatic weeds.

Selective pre-emergent herbicides allow you to control specific types of weeds before they’re a problem, without harming your existing lawn and landscape. These products will kill grassy and broadleaf weeds effectively with proper application.

About Selective Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Pre-emergent herbicides work by preventing weed or grass seeds from growing above ground. They stop growth when the plant is still below ground, and will only work on plants that have not yet emerged. Because your grass is already growing above ground, pre-emergent products should not harm your existing lawn. Many pre-emergent products will be labeled as selective. They come in liquid concentrate formulas, which should be diluted

How to Use Selective Pre-Emergent Herbicides

While this type of herbicide won’t damage your grass if used properly, there are some things you should keep in mind when using and applying pre-emergent selective herbicides to your yard and landscape to get the best results:

  • Choose the right product: Just like any herbicide product, you need to read the product label carefully before choosing your pre-emergent selective herbicide to make sure it will affect the weeds that you want to control. Also check to see what type of grass the product can be used on to protect your lawn.
  • Use on established, healthy lawns: Even though this type of herbicide shouldn’t damage your grass in normal circumstances, it might injure newly established turf or grass experiencing drought, disease, or pest damage, and could prevent grass seeds from growing if the lawn was recently seeded.
  • Apply at the right time: Pre-emergents must be applied at the right time in order to work. They have to be present in the soil before weed seeds germinate, and this is generally when the soil reaches about 55 degrees, usually between February and April, depending on where you live.
