I have not applied yet but intend on overseeding existing lawn and also patching bare areas, Do not know if I need to wait or if it matters at all. please advise.AWe would recommend to incorporate the Soil Doctor Pelletized Lawn Lime in the soil first and then plant your seed. Make sure to water thoroughly after as directed on the label.

You would need to refer to a soil test analysis for how much lime you need to apply to raise the pH correctly.

Would I need to remove the dead grass first and then apply or just apply? I would apply to the whole lawn because that would make the most sense. Read Full Answer »Unfortunately there isn't anything we are aware of that will keep dog urine from creating dead spots in the turf. Adding limestone such as Soil Doctor Pelletized Lawn Lime to areas of the lawn where there is discoloration due to pet urine has been known to help as another option. You should remove dead grass as much as possible. You can use fertilizers that promote good grass growth to help encourage it to thrive and withstand some of the urination. Fertilizers with Iron often help with the greening of the lawn as well to try and offset some of the yellowing The key is encouraging/training pets to use areas with pine straw or rock/non lawn areas to prevent damage to lawn.

Read Full Answer »Yes, it is possible to apply too much lime such as Soil Doctor Pelletized Lawn Lime to the lawn in which you may notice yellowing of the turf. Also, too much lime runs the risk of raising the pH level from a low level that is acidic up to a high level which would be alkaline and therefore the soil will not be able access to iron, potassium, and nitrogen it needs. Even lacking one of these nutrients can cause the lawn to yellow.
To correct over applications of lime, it is recommended to do a pH test of your lawn to get the pH level. The ideal pH level for growing grass is between 6.5 and 7. If the pH of the lawn is too high, do not apply anything for 4-8 weeks and keep watering the lawn. Using ammonium sulfate such as Hi-Yield Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0to lower the pH can be used to lower pH levels in alkaline soils.
We also suggest contacting the Master Gardener with the county Cooperative Extension Office to also assist you with rate levels and best timing of applications for your region.
