Using Squirrel Repellents

Like most wildlife repellents, squirrel repellents commonly use naturally derived ingredients, like garlic oil and hot peppers, to deter the animals. The ingredients used aim to irritate the animal’s senses, usually through touch and taste. They are harmless to the squirrels; yet help to change the animal’s behavior. It’s nearly impossible to change a squirrel’s instincts, but these products help to modify behavior, discouraging damage without harming the squirrels. These products are also very safe to the environment, pets, and kids, too. Here are some hints when using squirrel repellent spray or granules:

  • Repellents tend to work best when the squirrels (or other nuisance animals) are low in numbers, and aren’t causing heavy or widespread damage.
  • Repellents can’t solve all wildlife issues alone. Using other control methods in conjunction with repellents can help boost the efficacy of your efforts.
  • Use repellent products on certain plants and areas to give the squirrels access to other food sources. This helps to modify their undesirable behavior feeding on prized plants, and leading them to feed on unimportant ones.
  • Some repellents can be washed away by rainfall and will need to be re-applied regularly to maintain effectiveness.
