no wonder you cant send back opened packages
By Lori on 10/18/2016
I used a roller on my yard in a couple places every night so I could see the new activity. This trap is so hard to set. I have rich wet soil, and by the time I used a spade on each side of the trap so the jaws can move and then it wouldn't set (or lock down), i would have to pull it up and a huge chunk of my yard would come up with it. I am doing more damage to my yard than the moles are doing. I did get it set twice, once it was tripped and there was no mole, and the other time it just sat there and did not catch anything. No worries though because I went to Tractor supply and bought one of the spring loaded traps (which is very easy to use) and I caught one of the moles today. I think there is a reason you cant return opened products, because they know that a customer does not realize that it doesn't work until they use it. The spring loaded one is cheaper also.

I gave these to my Son-in-law for a Christmas gift. He had late season mole issues. I took the two that I own to his home. After one installation demonstration, in little time, he asked me where he could purchase these. These traps do work well. After proper installation, they seldom miss.
Been Using it two months , nothing yet

Trap is hard to set. Have moved it all around with different runs and haven't caught anything in two months!
Expert response:
Thank you for your comments. We agree that the Talpirid trap can take a lot of strength to set. If you are not using a shovel to make divots before placing the trap over your runways, then this can make setting the trap easier. You also want to be sure to test runs before setting your trap. You can use a dowel to make a hole or use your foot to gently depress a runway about 1 inch down, being careful not to completely collapse a runway. Check the damage 1-2 days later, and if it has been repaired, then the runway is active. If the damage is not repaired, then the runway is not active, and you should test somewhere else. I have reset the traps three times using the 7 day waiting periods and I have no catches. Any suggestions?

I think the moles are laughing at this contraption. Haven't caught one yet. Still trying and I have decided to make my own. I rated one star because I had to.

Very hard to set
By Susan on 07/06/2017
This might be great for some people but we have not been able to set it without great difficulty! By the time we finally get it set, the run has been completely destroyed and we have yet to catch a single mole. It is not nearly as easy as the illustration or video implies. I feel it probably works but there is more to setting it than appears.

Not worth it
By Brad on 05/25/2018
This trap was clumsy and hard to use, never caught a single mole, although I followed the instructions carefully. It was expensive and at this point a useless item. Total waste of my money. I had to switch to a smaller "wire style" trap and caught several moles in a short period of time. Live and learn.
Talpirid Mole Trap - Ridiculous
By Paul on 07/06/2018
This thing is ridiculously oversized and overbuilt for the size of moles. I don't consider myself weak and I am not afraid to say I could not load the trap because of the the excessive spring tension. It is also cumbersome and difficult to place on the ground as directed. I would not buy again to use for its' stated purpose.
No where near worth the effort or the price
By Ray on 07/07/2018
First I'd like to say the I have caught a mole with this trap. I must have got lucky that day. It's big, bulky, and the spring is too hard to work with. Just positioning it in the ground usually tears up everything. Most of the time while trying to place over a tunnel, I tear the tunnel all to heck and give up. The knives are so big and require so much room to move, I destroy the tunnel. I think the soil structure has something to do with that also. Anyway, I gave up and ordered the Talpirid Mole Bait. SUCCESS!!!! FINALLY!!!! I have moles everywhere but, with a little patience and this BAIT, you can reduce the population greatly or run them off. Either way, who cares?? I now have grass where I rarely did. Dirt mounds aren't everywhere. The Bait Worms are the BEST!!!! Just do your best not to get your "scent" on the worms or the hole. BAIT WORKS GREAT!!! TRAP WORKS NOT GREAT!!
Awful product DO NOT BUY!
By Bruce on 10/05/2018
Hard to set even in moist soil and following the instructions to a T. First one set after nearly having to destroy the tunnel area to get it to catch. Second one would not set at all. Again followed the instructions to the letter. Plastic that is supposed to go in the ground broke: cheap and flimsy. Tried repeatedly to set but would not catch. First trap sprang on its own accord after about 10 minutes in the ground which is rock free, sandy loam. Heavy duty spring and cheap plastic everywhere else. How can this be called a professional grade product???
Best Mole trap!

Works as advertised
By Buck on 07/08/2019
I received the (2) Talprid Mole traps in a few days from order. By the 2nd day I was catching moles and have already gotten 4 of them. I does take some practice to make sure you get the trigger set right. If its not correct moles will go under it, pushing the trigger button up, but not enough to trip it. Make sure to follow the directions. I have also found it easier in harder packed soil to use a small trowel to make sure the soil where the teeth are inserted is clear of roots, etc. It may be more difficult to use in heavy clay type soils. Again it takes some practice but is an effective device.
Works great (> 30 moles in the last 3 years..no joke)!
By Cris on 10/04/2019
The key is to use a spade just like it says. I bought two traps initially because the moles had tunnels all over the place and I wanted to hedge my bets. Originally, I did exactly what the instructions said and it worked like a charm. I caught my first mole a few hours after the trap was set...it was awesome! Slowly, though, I quit using the shovel to help widen the tunnel for the "jaws" and soon I was just using the trap itself to do it (since I figured the ground was soft enough since the moles had already gone through). Unfortunately, that wasn't always the case, and there was a little resistance setting the trap...eventually that happened enough that I actually broke the latch that helps the trap stay down and had to buy two more earlier this year. The only downfall is right now I have a mole that is staying right along the sidewalk so I'm gonna have to get another type of trap (plunger style?) in order to catch him.

Seems Easy o Use
By Russell on 08/16/2020
No problem, just step on the trap, set the lock and it's ready to go. Yeah sure, IF it was designed properly. What happened to engineers? It is almost impossible to set trap without it moving as you step. This is because there are no setting pins (essentially spikes at each corner) to secure in place BEFORE stepping on trap. As you step it moves, most times almost 2-3 inches unless you have VERY loamy soil. In any decent soil it has to be dug in place for proper placement. Poorly designed and executed, it COULD have been a good trap. Back to the standard spike trap.
A good mole trap
By Mark on 11/13/2020
As someone who has been dealing with moles for years, I can say that the Talparid is the best mole trap I have used. Is it perfect? No, but it is very good. The biggest complaint I have is the same one that other users have mentioned in online reviews: It can be confoundingly hard to set. The online tutorials don't even hint at how difficult it can be. Sometimes I feel like I get it set almost by accident. That said, once the trap is set, it is very effective. If you set it on an active run, the mole's goose is cooked. However, if the run is too far underground, the trap's prongs will not be set deep enough to be effective, but that is true of every mole trap I have used. The moles in my neighborhood seem to have gotten smarter over the years, but Talparid has caught its share.
Excellent Mole Trap
By John on 11/07/2021
Love this trap! Have already caught three moles with zero false trips. Only issue I have is you must pay attention to creating the two slits for the jaws. If they aren't done correctly, you'll have trouble setting the trap. Not a flaw, the jaws need to be able to open (during set) and close (gotcha). Just takes some practice. Once you have one, it's a piece of cake to unload the dead mole with a "no touch" design.

Tough to install
By Glenn on 12/01/2023
I got two as our lawn service guy said was his favorite, but others worked. Well designed, but I found it much harder to install than expected, have to dig deep and wide, and if soil hard, getting it to push down very hard. But overall, once installed good. Instructions included were very good.
