Fire Ant Control

Research trials and field tests conducted by industry professionals have proven that with the addition of its powerful new active ingredient (Zeta-Cypermethrin), Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide eliminates fire ant colonies within four hours or less. And in some cases, the fire ant populations were decimated in minutes, not hours. At these speeds, other products can’t even come close to the control of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide.

Excellent Residual

In addition to its breakthrough active ingredient, Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide has been formulated with the same long-lasting residual of Talstar PL Granular Insecticide, for the highly dependable control professionals have come to expect. While fire ants and other pests can be gone in as little as minutes, the residual protection of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide is proven to remain effective for at least four months.

Flexibility

Talstar XTRA is approved for use on a wide variety of application sites, including residential lawns, institutional grounds, around buildings (public, commercial and industrial), parks, recreational areas and athletic fields.

    Just OK

    By Bubba on 10/16/2010

This product worked great... at first. Applied it correctly and it was like a nuclear bomb went off - no ants, no crickets, no anything. However, a week or so went by and the ants were back. Why? Probably because of local control. I have lots of sandy spots and those don't take to the poison well? I find the liquid talstar HARDER to apply, but it works better in all conditions. For some reason the granular works well for yards and areas with no sand, etc. The granules are also hard to spread in landscape beds. Talstar as a whole is the BEST so maybe the answer is to buy granular for the grassy areas that are usually large and hard to cover with spray and then buy the spray for the landscaping beds and sandy spots in your lawn. Either way BE CAREFUL this stuff is so toxic that in minutes lizards, crickets, and ants start to flee their hiding places and you'll find them everywhere... dead! 5 stars for the liquid Talstar for sure, 4 stars for Talstar XTRA because despite the fact it has pretty ant(s) on the packaging it is not that great for ant(s) and may not work around planting beds, near sidewalks, and/or empty patches in lawns.

    Fire Ants

    By Roscoe on 04/09/2012

    Verified Purchase

We were getting ready to have a big birthday party for the Grandson and found too many fire ants to take the chance. We used the Talstar Xtra on the recomendation of a friend who is in the pest control business. We spread 50 pounds with the lawn spreader and didn't see one ANT at the party. Great product, Thanks.

Product is on the expensive side but works great, I have not seen an ant on my lawn since it was applied 2 weeks ago, it also seems to have killed the chinch bugs as I am seeing a change of the bald spots on my lawn.

    Talstar Granules

    By Robert on 04/14/2012

    Verified Purchase

I put the granules out around the shrubbery and foundation of the house according to directions. I used the Talstar spray a month ago on the walls of the house. My roach problem has almost been elimintated. The Roaches I do see don't feel so good. Along with most other houses in Macon, last week we had our yearly infestation of redbugs crawling everywhere - except where that I had sprayed with Talstar. Good stuff and I like the lack of odor and ease of use. Make certain you have a good spreader.

Q
Can I use Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide for Spittle bugs?

This product label does not mention spittlebugs but I know the active ingredients (bifenethrin) are good for pest control of spittlebug. Will this product work to eliminate spittlebugs from tall fescue?

A

Since Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide doesn't mention the spittlebugs on the label, we cannot recommend using it to control them. The liquid version, Talstar P, does list spittlebugs as controlled.

Q
Will Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide work best to treat for leaf ants on a property with sugar sand.

I live on sugar sand and have those leaf ants everywhere. They strip every plant overnight of all leaves. Which Telstar product would be best to kill these?

A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide will get rid of most ant species except for Pharoah ants.
Leaf cutter ants can be a difficult pest to get rid of. The colonies are large and the ants make their own food so poison baits only have limited effects on this species of ants. Plants can be protected temporarily using dust or granular formulations of contact insecticides, like acephatecarbaryl or permethrin. but such treatments must be reapplied frequently. Also, plant applications do little to eliminate the underground nest.According to several university websites, Maxforce Complete Granules containing hydramethlynon are some what effective, though they will usually eliminate only about 30% of a large colony in one treatment and will need to be reapplied several times.  DeltaGard granules is one of the only products actually labeled for leaf cutter ants. The product label recommends treating the mound directly and lightly watering the granules in.
Again, it may take several treatments to get the desired results. Since Leafcutter Ant nests may extend deep underground and are often located near bodies of water, call your local cooperative extension office for their recommendations before using any insecticide spray.

Q
is talstar extra safe to use in vegetable garden?
A
Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide are not labeled for vegetable gardens. Instead you could use something like Sevin Lawn Insect Granules. If a granule is not necessary, another great option would be the Fertilome Triple Action Plus which can be sprayed in and on the garden for control of insects and vegetable diseases, and the food can be harvested the same day.

Q
Is Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide safe for my ducks, chickens and pigs that roam free in my yard to treat for fleas?
A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide could not be used in areas where animals may consume the turfgrass as this is not labeled for grazing areas.

Permethrin SFR 36.8% would be a better option for treating the lawn and surrounding areas for fleas along with tank mixing NyGuard IGR to help stop the reproduction cycle. These products can be used in and around livestock premises and where ducks, chickens and pigs would roam. Mix Permethrin SFR at 0.4 to 0.8 fl oz per 4 gallons of water along with 4 ml to 8 ml per gallon of water per 1000 sq f.

View the Permethrin SFR product label and NyGuard IGR product label for more information.

Q
Does Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide kill mosquitoes? I do not see mosquitoes on the product label.

I am looking for a granular product to kill mosquitoes and the larvae, will this work?

A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide is not labeled for mosquitoes or mosquito larvae. Granule insecticides are not going to be effective to treat mosquitoes as mosquitoes hide on the undersides of leaves and foliage during the heat of the day, in areas of dense foliage, trees, shrubs and in shaded, cool damp areas. Using a liquid insecticide concentrate such as Talstar P Liquid Concentrate would be a better option for mosquito control.

For mosquito larvae, Altosid Pro-G Mosquito Larvicide would be the recommended product to use in areas of standing water to kill larvae and help stop with breeding.

Please view our Mosquito Treatment Guide and our Mosquito Control Kits that offer a variety of options for treating mosquito populations on your property.

Q
Is Talstar XTRA Granules equally effective on fleas as the liquid Talstar P Insecticide?

I noticed Talstar Pro has a higher percentage of bifenthrin.

A

Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide uses 2 active ingredients (zeta Cypermethrin & Bifenthrin) for a quick knockdown and longer residual than Talstar P Liquid Insecticide. These granules last 2-3 months against listed insects and are also uniform in size and made of a clay verge material to evenly dissolve when watered in providing even coverage. Talstar P lasts for 30 days outdoors.

For heavy flea populations outdoors, we would recommend using an Insect Growth Regulator like NyGuard IGR to help stop the reproduction cycle. If using Talstar XTRA Granules, this would be a separate application using a handpump/backpack sprayer. If using Talstar P Liquid, you could tank mix the IGR in the same tank. View the NyGuard IGR product label for more information.

Please take a moment to review our Flea Control Guide for additional helpful tips on eradicating this pest.
